The Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales from the Old French by Charles Perrault,Arthur Quiller-Couch Pdf

The Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales from the Old French is a collection of children's fantasy stories by Charles Perrault. was a French author who laid the foundations for the fairy tale as a literary genre. Excerpt: "Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen, who lacked but one thing on earth to make them entirely happy. The King was young, handsome, and wealthy; the Queen had a nature as good and gentle as her face was beautiful; and they adored one another, having married for love—which among kings and queens is not always the rule. Moreover, they reigned over a kingdom at peace, and their people were devoted to them. What more, then, could they possibly want? Well, they wanted one thing very badly, and the lack of it grieved them more than words can tell. They had no child. Vows, pilgrimages, all ways were tried; yet for a long while nothing came of it all, and the poor Queen especially was in despair. At last, however, to her own and her husband's inexpressible joy, she gave birth to a daughter. As soon as the palace guns announced this event, the whole nation went wild with delight. Flags waved everywhere, bells were set pealing until the steeples rocked, crowds tossed up their hats and cheered, while the soldiers presented arms, and even strangers meeting in the street fell upon each other's neck, exclaiming: 'Our Queen has a daughter! Yes, yes—Our Queen has a daughter! Long live the little Princess!'"

The Sleeping Beauty, and Other Fairy Tales by Arthur Quiller-Couch Pdf

Excerpt from The Sleeping Beauty, and Other Fairy Tales: From the Old French Englishman found time to read at large in the Caez'net a'es Fees, he would have discovered therein much to corroborate the evidence steadily and unconsciously borne by his own journals - that the urbanity of life among the French upper classes was genuine, reflecting a real and (for a whole society) a remarkable sunniness of disposition. Unconscious of their doom, the little victims played. But they did play; and they fell victims, not to their own passions, but to a form of government economically rotten. The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales by Charles Perrault,Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, Sir Pdf

Quiller-Couch here gives us these four fairy tales that have been perennial favorites for centuries. The first three fairy tales are 'The Sleeping Beauty, ' 'Blue Beard, ' and 'Cinderella, ' all three of which were popularized in France by Charles Perrault in 1697 in his Tales of Mother Goose. The last tale in the compilation is 'Beauty and the Beast, ' this version attributed to Gabrielle de Villeneuve, who published it in 1740 and 1756. Quiller-Couch had this to say regarding his translation of these tales: 'I began by translating Perrault's tales, very nearly word for word....the translations, when finished, did not satisfy me, and so I turned back to the beginning and have rewritten the stories in my own way, which (as you may say with the Irish butler) may not be the best claret, but tis the best we ve got.'

The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French - Illustrated by Edmund Dulac by Arthur Quiller-Couch Pdf

The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French contains a collection of stories, adapted and translated by Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch. Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer, who published under the pen-name of Q. Originally penned by such famed folklorists as Charles Perrault and Madame D’Aulnoy, these stories proved to their original seventeenth century readers that such works were important, enjoyable, as well as thought-provoking. The stories in this particular text encompass favourites such as ‘Sleeping Beauty, ‘Blue Beard’, ‘Cinderella, or the Little Glass Slipper’, and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ This edition of Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales further contains a set of dazzling coloured illustrations by a true master of the ‘Golden Age’; Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these Old French tales as well as a rigorously painterly background. The end result was beautifully coloured images which further refined the wonderful stories of Perrault, D’Aulnoy – retold by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Appearing alongside the text, his illustrations enhance and elucidate the enchanting narratives.

Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) was a Cornish writer, who published under the pen name of Q. He published his Dead Man's Rock (a romance in the vein of Stevenson's Treasure Island) in 1887, and he followed this up with Troy Town (1888) and The Splendid Spur (1889). After some journalistic experience in London, mainly as a contributor to the Speaker, in 1891 he settled at Fowey in Cornwall. In 1895 he published an anthology from the 16th and 17th-century English lyrists, The Golden Pomp, followed in 1900 by an equally successful Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900 (1900). His later novels include: The Blue Pavilions (1891), The Ship of Stars (1899), Hetty Wesley (1903), The Adventures of Harry Revel (1903), Fort Amity (1904), The Shining Ferry (1905) and Sir John Constantine (1906).
