Smar: Return of the Machines by David T Bennett Pdf

Back on Topside and a chance discovery reunites our gang of misfits for a second perilous adventure. With Nerak and Karel remaining on Topside to watch their discovery, Tega meets with his old friends to meet up with the now-released professor Snikwah at the infamous resort of Rocby-on-Sea. There they meet up with Fisah, an old friend of Ha’ans. Their journey will take them across the Sea of Despair, and along the Ancient Highway. What they find at the end of the Highway amazes and confuses them. Below and in a secret scientific research centre, a strange device from the landing site emits sounds. Unaware of its significance and unsure of its risk to Below, the Hierarchy sends a reluctant Professor Xoc and the device on the fastest and most terrifying way across Topside to meet up with our crew. Meanwhile, Raciv, head of the clerics, is aware of what secrets lie at the end of the Highway. He has deemed that no one finds out the truth about the National Library. Jes is despatched to make sure of this, but with his newfound knowledge and friendship with the once abandoned journalist Asil, will Jes obey or defy his master’s orders? What has Asil discovered and just how far will she go to get revenge? All this culminates in a historic meeting of Simians and Machine – which would bring about a new era for both. A new era that will bring about events that will change things forever.

Rickshaw Coolie by James Francis Warren Pdf

Between 1880 and 1930 colonial Singapore attracted tens of thousands of Chinese immigrant laborers, brought to serve its rapidly growing economy. This book chronicles the vast movement of coolies between China and the Nanyang, and their efforts to survive in colonial Singapore. Focusing in on one particular occupation, of rickshaw coolie, this study unveils the devastating poverty of the Chinese sojourner in the colonial city, the disjunctions between colonial order and the reality of life on the streets. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including Coroner's records overlooked for many years, and making use of the technique of collective biography, this book brings to life the texture of experience, the ironies and - often - the despair of the laborers of urban Singapore. In the years since its original publication in 1986, Rickshaw Coolie has become an inspiration to those seeking to come to grips with Singapore's past.

Instrument Engineers' Handbook, Volume Two by Bela G. Liptak Pdf

The latest update to Bela Liptak's acclaimed "bible" of instrument engineering is now available. Retaining the format that made the previous editions bestsellers in their own right, the fourth edition of Process Control and Optimization continues the tradition of providing quick and easy access to highly practical information. The authors are practicing engineers, not theoretical people from academia, and their from-the-trenches advice has been repeatedly tested in real-life applications. Expanded coverage includes descriptions of overseas manufacturer's products and concepts, model-based optimization in control theory, new major inventions and innovations in control valves, and a full chapter devoted to safety. With more than 2000 graphs, figures, and tables, this all-inclusive encyclopedic volume replaces an entire library with one authoritative reference. The fourth edition brings the content of the previous editions completely up to date, incorporates the developments of the last decade, and broadens the horizons of the work from an American to a global perspective. Béla G. Lipták speaks on Post-Oil Energy Technology on the AT&T Tech Channel.

River Basin Modelling for Flood Risk Mitigation by Donald Knight,Asaad Shamseldin Pdf

Flooding accounts for one-third of natural disasters worldwide and for over half the deaths which occur as a result of natural disasters. As the frequency and volume of flooding increases, as a result of climate change, there is a new urgency amongst researchers and professionals working in flood risk management. River Basin Modelling for Flood Risk Mitigation brings together thirty edited papers by leading experts who gathered for the European Union’s Advanced Study Course at the University of Birmingham, UK. The scope of the course ranged from issues concerning the protection of life, to river restoration and wetland management. A variety of topics is covered in the book including climate change, hydro-informatics, hydro-meterology, river flow forecasting systems and dam-break modelling. The approach is broad, but integrated, providing an attractive and informative package that will satisfy researchers and professionals, while offering a sound introduction to students in Engineering and Geography.

Flaubert: Transportation, Progression, Progress (Le Romantisme Et Après En France by Kate Rees Pdf

A belief in progress tells us something about the way a society views itself. Progress speaks of confidence, optimism and dynamism. It assures us of pattern and structure. In the nineteenth century, as the Christian model of development is increasingly challenged and as geological findings expand understanding of history, so progress emerges from the Enlightenment as an ever more acute subject for debate. This book addresses the theme of progress and patterns of progression in the work of Flaubert. Through close textual analysis of his works and particular scrutiny of his narrative structures, this book argues that Flaubert's position in the mid-nineteenth century situates his work at an intriguing historical crossroads, between Romantic faith in progress and assertions of Decadent decline. Flaubert's response to progress is rich and complicated, offering stimulating views of momentum and perfectibility. In this study, actual progression is seen as a metaphor for understanding Flaubert's attitude to historical progress. Each chapter focuses on a particular vehicle or pattern of movement, analysing journeys undertaken by characters in Flaubert's texts as models of disrupted, non-linear progression which provide a counter-current to contemporary ideologies of progress. A closing chapter examines connections between Flaubert and Huysmans, investigating the response to progress in later nineteenth-century literature.

Handbook of Mathematical Models and Algorithms in Computer Vision and Imaging by Ke Chen,Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb,Xue-Cheng Tai,Laurent Younes Pdf

This handbook gathers together the state of the art on mathematical models and algorithms for imaging and vision. Its emphasis lies on rigorous mathematical methods, which represent the optimal solutions to a class of imaging and vision problems, and on effective algorithms, which are necessary for the methods to be translated to practical use in various applications. Viewing discrete images as data sampled from functional surfaces enables the use of advanced tools from calculus, functions and calculus of variations, and nonlinear optimization, and provides the basis of high-resolution imaging through geometry and variational models. Besides, optimization naturally connects traditional model-driven approaches to the emerging data-driven approaches of machine and deep learning. No other framework can provide comparable accuracy and precision to imaging and vision. Written by leading researchers in imaging and vision, the chapters in this handbook all start with gentle introductions, which make this work accessible to graduate students. For newcomers to the field, the book provides a comprehensive and fast-track introduction to the content, to save time and get on with tackling new and emerging challenges. For researchers, exposure to the state of the art of research works leads to an overall view of the entire field so as to guide new research directions and avoid pitfalls in moving the field forward and looking into the next decades of imaging and information services. This work can greatly benefit graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in imaging and vision; applied mathematicians; medical imagers; engineers; and computer scientists.

National Household Education Survey of 1996 by Mary A. Collins,J. Michael Brick,Mary Jo Nolin,Susan Gilmore,Kathryn Chandler,Chris Chapman Pdf

The 1996 National Household Education Survey (NHES:96) was a random digit dial telephone survey of households developed by the National Center for Education Statistics and conducted by Westat, Inc. The NHES:96 included two topical survey components, "Parent and Family Involvement in Education," which collected data about family involvement in children's schooling, and "Civic Involvement" (CI), which collected data about participation in civic activities and attitudes toward government. This manual provides documentation and guidance for users of the public release data file for the Adult CI component. It contains a description of the Adult CI files and a discussion of data considerations and anomalies. Volume V is meant to be read in conjunction with Volume I, which provides information about the entire study. The Adult CI file contains data from all completed Adult CI interviews. There are 2 records for each completed interview, so that the file contains 4,500 records for the 2,250 cases. It is organized so that logically related variables are grouped together. Data are listed in the following order: (1) system variables; (2) household membership variables; (3) questionnaire item variables; (4) household characteristics variables; (5) derived variables; (6) weighting and variance estimation variables; and (7) imputation flag variables. Included as appendixes are the public file layout, Statistical Analysis System code for creating derived variables, the codebook for the Adult CI public data file, and directions and sample codes for linking NHES:96 data files. Social and Economic Conditions of Student Life in Europe by Christoph Gwosc,Kristina Hauschildt,Froukje Wartenbergh-Cras,Hendrik Schirmer Pdf

The project EUROSTUDENT has been delivering data on the social and economic conditions of student life in Europe for the past 20 years. The current edition presents the data and results from the period 2018 to 2021, and is based on information provided by students from 25 countries in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The project also examines the social dimensions of studying at a higher education institute, as well as, in part, the impact of COVID-19. The EHEA emphasised this social dimension in its 2020 Rome Communiqué; it was therefore one of the key topics the project group focused on with the aim of inspiring education policy debates and establishing the basis for future research work. The latest report therefore includes data on access to higher education and the respective conditions experienced by the students, their willingness to relocate internationally to pursue their studies, the quality of higher education courses and the planned courses of study. The report is the EUROSTUDENT project's most important publication, and is developed by a network of researchers and national ministry representatives as well as other stakeholders from all over Europe.
