Snapper....Confessions of a News of the World Photographer by Paul Barker Pdf

The day that the closure of the News of the World was announced, will forever be regarded as the saddest in the entire history of journalism. Paul Barker was one of the handful of freelance photographers used on a full time basis by the paper, so when it came, the news was a devastating bombshell. After over 20 years working as a photojournalist, with 12 of those on the News of the World, he has been uniquely placed to give an insight into what it was like to work on a Sunday tabloid. From photography tips, to getting into events without a pass, 'Snapper' provides a fantastic, and highly amusing, window into the world of a national newspaper photographer. Rather than an expose into the phone hacking scandal that finally engulfed the paper, Snapper...Confessions of a News of the World Photographer, is a celebration of some of its finest moments. Recounted in a personal and engaging style, it is a series of often hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking anecdotes. It chronicles some of the best known, as well as some of the more obscure stories, covered by what many have come to regard as the world’s greatest newspaper.

Spoken Image by Clive Scott Pdf

Language has always been central to the meaning and exploitation of photographic images. However, the various types and "styles" of language associated with different photographic genres have been largely overlooked. This book considers the nature of photography, examining the language used in titles, captions and commentaries, particularly as they relate to documentary photography, photojournalism and fashion photography. The Spoken Image addresses the question of how the photograph communicates its message, with or without the aid of language. The book looks at the work of film-makers such as Antonioni and Greenaway to contrast filmic methods of narration with those of photography. Scott concludes that photography has arrived at a level of communicative sophistication equal to that of modern textual narratives, in conjunction with which it often works.

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway Pdf

The illustrated edition of Ernest Hemingway's first novel. The Sun Also Rises is a 1926 novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway, his first, that portrays American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls and the bullfights. An early and enduring modernist novel, it received mixed reviews upon publication. However, Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes that it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work", and Hemingway scholar Linda Wagner-Martin calls it his most important novel. The novel was published in the United States in October 1926 by Scribner's. A year later, Jonathan Cape published the novel in London under the title Fiesta. It remains in print. The novel is a roman à clef: the characters are based on real people in Hemingway's circle, and the action is based on real events, particularly Hemingway's life in Paris in the 1920s and a trip to Spain in 1925 for the Pamplona festival and fishing in the Pyrenees. Hemingway presents his notion that the "Lost Generation"-considered to have been decadent, dissolute, and irretrievably damaged by World War I-was in fact resilient and strong. Hemingway investigates the themes of love and death, the revivifying power of nature, and the concept of masculinity. His spare writing style, combined with his restrained use of description to convey characterizations and action, demonstrates his "Iceberg Theory" of writing. Plot summary On the surface, the novel is a love story between the protagonist Jake Barnes-a man whose war wound has made him unable to have sex-and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley. Jake is an expatriate American journalist living in Paris, while Brett is a twice-divorced Englishwoman with bobbed hair and numerous love affairs, and embodies the new sexual freedom of the 1920s. Brett's affair with Jake's college friend Robert Cohn causes Jake to be upset and break off his friendship with Robert; her seduction of the 19-year-old matador Romero causes Jake to lose his good reputation among the Spaniards in Pamplona. Book One is set in the café society of young American expatriates in Paris. In the opening scenes, Jake plays tennis with Robert, picks up a prostitute (Georgette), and runs into Brett and Count Mippipopolous in a nightclub. Later, Brett tells Jake she loves him, but they both know that they have no chance at a stable relationship. In Book Two, Jake is joined by Bill Gorton, recently arrived from New York, and Brett's fiancé Mike Campbell, who arrives from Scotland. Jake and Bill travel south and meet Robert at Bayonne for a fishing trip in the hills northeast of Pamplona. Instead of fishing, Robert stays in Pamplona to wait for the overdue Brett and Mike. Robert had an affair with Brett a few weeks earlier and still feels possessive of her despite her engagement to Mike. After Jake and Bill enjoy five days of fishing the streams near Burguete, they rejoin the group in Pamplona. All begin to drink heavily. Robert is resented by the others, who taunt him with antisemitic remarks. During the fiesta the characters drink, eat, watch the running of the bulls, attend bullfights, and bicker with each other. Jake introduces Brett to the 19-year-old matador Romero at the Hotel Montoya; she is smitten with him and seduces him.

For Queen and Currency by Michael Gillard Pdf

In For Queen & Currency, investigative journalist Michael Gillard exposes a massive fraud and security scandal at Buckingham Palace which Scotland Yard and the Royal Household tried to suppress. Drawing on thousands of leaked documents and police sources, Gillard tells the inside story of a group of Royalty Protection officers who entertained a life of high-risk gambling, brown envelopes of cash and striking gangster poses on the throne of England while guarding the royal family and their secrets from terrorism and press intrusion. Paul Page, a young royal protection officer turned degenerate gambler, ran a hedge fund for cops during the credit and property booms. His Currency Club bet millions on movement in sterling and gold and paid investors returns beyond the dreams of avarice and financial logic. As word spread to other royal palaces, more protection officers and their friends piled in with savings and cheap loans from banks, many of which were running their own Ponzi scam. Page was hiding huge gambling losses and when the returns dried up a hit man threatened his family, sending the royal cop over the edge and on the rampage with a gun. Scotland Yard tried to spin the scandal to divert attention from its own regulatory failures. But Page refused to go quietly. His sensational trial became an arena to expose the elite royalty protection squad and the private life of a senior royal. “The Queen is going to be mightily pissed off,” he warned. “[There was] an agreed understanding that what happened at Royalty stayed at Royalty.” Not any more.

Vivian Maier by Anonim Pdf

Updated with new material to celebrate the ten year discovery of Vivian Maier's work This is the only book that tells the life story of Vivian Maier in words and pictures. Known as "the nanny photographer," Maier became an Internet sensation after her photos were put online in 2009. Since then, Maier's breathtaking pictures--which show everyday life in mid-century America--have earned her recognition of one of the masters of photography. Presenting her photographs alongside revealing interviews with those who knew her best, this volume puts Vivian Maier's work in context and creates a moving portrait of her as an artist. To better understand Maier, authors Richard Cahan and Michael Williams studied census records, ship manifests and interviewed every person they could find who knew Maier, from her childhood days in the French Alps to the families whose children she cared for in the United States. They combined this biographical information, much of it unreported, with more than 300 photographs that she took starting in 1949 to create the first comprehensive record of her life story.
