Captain Crash and the Dallas Cowboys by Cliff Harris Pdf

How does it feel to see your name among the Cowboys greats in Texas Stadium’s Ring of Honor? What was it like to be recruited by professional scouts? What happened to the guy who hooked Randy White in the back with a wayward fishhook? How did legendary coach Tom Landry motivate his players? How did a waterbed and transcendental meditation help Cliff Harris gain an edge over his opponents? Replete with memories from his college days at Ouachita Baptist and then as a member of the Dallas Cowboys during the “America’s Team” era, Cliff answers those questions and more in the updated edition of Captain Crash and the Dallas Cowboys. Read about his teammates, his coach, his enemies, training secrets, Super Bowls—of which Cliff played in five, winning two—Pro Bowls, motorcycles, and motorboats. In this book, first published in 2006 and now including a new introduction, Cliff takes us on the wild ride that was his life as a Cowboy free safety and how he got there in the first place. The book also includes great insider stories written by famous fellow players Walt Garrison, Roger Staubach, Lee Roy Jordan, and Charlie Waters. Perfect for the shelf of any Dallas Cowboys fan! Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Désiré Collen - Biotech Pioneer by Paul Huybrechts,Frieda Van Wijck Pdf

Désiré Collen, Biotech Pioneer relates the fascinating story of scientific discovery in a time when biotechnology was not yet a science. Although the cultivation and cross fertilization of plants were, strictly speaking, biotechnological techniques, modern biotechnology dates from the early 1970s, when pioneers such as biochemist Herbert Boyer from the university of California managed to transfer genetic material into a bacterium. Together with venture capitalist Robert Swanson, Boyer set up Genentech, one of the first genetic engineering companies. Just a few years later, on the other side of the Atlantic, in Leuven, Désiré Collen discovered t-PA, the enzyme responsible for fibrinolysis, or the dissolving of blood clots. Clogged arteries were then still one of the major causes of death. The ensuing cooperation between Collen and Genentech was the beginning of a long-lasting success story, from which not only Collen but also scientific research and the University of Leuven benefitted greatly for many years. According to a Reuters ranking, KU Leuven has been, from 2016 onwards, the most innovative university in Europe. Flanders and Belgium served as the cradle of several highly successful biotech companies. t-PA was a relatively expensive medicine, and Collen went on to develop a much cheaper clot-dissolving remedy to benefit patients in less affluent countries. He failed, however, to find the necessary finances for Phase 3 trials. Meanwhile, he had set up ThromboGenics, a company which later specialized in ophthalmology. Collen continued to stimulate and finance research in other fields, such as the cardiovascular research of Peter Carmeliet. In 2013 he left ThromboGenics, following a difference in views on the company’s focus, and in 2015 he set up Fund+, a biotech-oriented investment firm. Fund+ has meanwhile acquired a prominent place among European biotech investment funds and has scored some astonishing early successes. In June 2020, Fund+ had 13 companies in its portfolio, with several more waiting to come on board.

No Excuses by Gene Wojciechowski,Bob Stoops Pdf

From the legendary Oklahoma coach, a candid and inspiring memoir. When Bob Stoops took over as football coach in 1999, the Oklahoma Sooners were in disarray with back-to-back losing seasons. But in just two years' time, Stoops achieved the seemingly impossible: winning a national championship and returning the struggling Sooners to their powerhouse status, churning out NFL talent, Heisman Trophy winners and conference championships, bowl wins and national title runs on a regular basis. During his 18 seasons at OU, his record was a remarkable 190-48. At only age 56, at the peak of his career, he stunned the college football world by walking away. For the first time, Bob opens up about his career alongside the evolution of the game itself. From his unlikely emergence as a star player at the University of Iowa, to his coaching apprenticeships under giants like Hayden Fry, Bill Snyder, and Steve Spurrier, Stoops recounts how the game he fell in love with as a boy has evolved into a billion-dollar business often compromised by recruiting wars, aggressive agents, overzealous boosters and alumni, and the emergence of the CEO head coach rather than mentor and teacher. Bob holds nothing back while explaining why it was time to step away from the game--and players--he still loves. Told with a rare combination of sincerity, vulnerability, and pure heart, No Excuses is both an engaging and eye-opening football memoir and an unprecedented portrait of a coach of one of the greatest legacy programs in the history of the college game.

Technocreep by Thomas P. Keenan Pdf

"Technology is rapidly moving into our bodies," writes cyber expert Keenan, "and this book gives a chilling look ahead into where that road may lead us - on a one way trip to the total surrender of privacy and the commoditization of intimacy." Here is the definitive dissection of privacy-eroding and life-invading technologies, coming at you from governments, corporations, and the person next door. Take, for example, "Girls Around Me": a Russian-made iPhone App that allowed anyone to scan the immediate vicinity for girls and women who checked in on Foursquare and had poorly secured Facebook profiles. It combined this information in a way never intended by the original poster. Going to a Disney theme park? Your creepy new "MagicBand" will alert Minnie Mouse that you're on the way and she'll know your kid's name when you approach her. Thinking about sending your DNA off to Ancestry.com for some "genetic genealogy"? Perhaps you should think again: your genetic information could be used against you. "This masterful weaving of the negatives and positives of technology makes for a book that is realistic about technology's perils yet optimistic about it's great potential."--Foreword Reviews
