In the course of evolving these. Dances, a vast number of steps and figures have been tried. Though most of them have dropped out of use, their introduction has caused serious confusion. Social Dancing of to-Day by John Murray Anderson Pdf

Excerpt from Social Dancing of to-Day Mr. John Murray Anderson, under whose careful supervision this book was prepared, is known as the teacher of many of those most authoritative in New York social matters. His reputation has been attained not chiefly on the stage or in restaurants, but in the homes of leaders of good taste. The illustrations are from photographs of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. Those who take up the study of the new dances sometimes express discouragement with the frequency of change in both steps and names. In the course of evolving these dances, a vast number of steps and figures have been tried. Though most of them have dropped out of use, their introduction has caused serious confusion. The remedy lies in a definite course of simplifying and standardizing; and that is the course upon which the most influential teachers have decided. The steps and figures described in this book (which is reprinted from "The Dance," a work, embracing the choregraphic art in general) have the essential character of the dances to which they respectively belong. They have passed through a period of probation amply sufficient to prove their possession of the beauty and dignity that are necessary to permanency. They form a complete list, moreover, of the steps that have established for themselves a definite place in the ballroom of conservatively smart society. Unusually clever amateurs are interested in figures that have the character of fancy dancing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of Dancing (Classic Reprint) by Reginald St Johnston Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Dancing Of late years there has been a tendency, not only on the stage, but also in the ball-rooms, to wander from the polished graces of our ancestors, and to introduce, in the former, certain styles of dancing that are far from graceful, such as cake-walks, high-kicking, and other extravagant forms which can only debase the art; and in the latter, a wild and irresponsible romping, which has made such expres sions as Kitchen Lancers a bye-word. In this book I have endeavoured to show from what beautiful origins many of our dances have sprung, and how the great dancers of the past were wont to associate with their dances the poetry and noble thoughts that were the theme round which their skill revolved. In tracing the history of the subject I have found an almost entirely new field to work upon, for with the exception of two books, one by a Frenchman. Modern Moves by Danielle Robinson Pdf

Modern Moves traces the movement of American social dance styles between black and white cultural groups and between immigrant and migrant communities during the early twentieth century. Its central focus is New York City, where the confluence of two key demographic streams - an influx of immigrants from Eastern Europe and the growth of the city's African American community particularly as it centered Harlem - created the conditions of possibility for hybrid dance forms like blues, ragtime, ballroom, and jazz dancing. Author Danielle Robinson illustrates how each of these forms came about as the result of the co-mingling of dance traditions from different cultural and racial backgrounds in the same urban social spaces. The results of these cross-cultural collisions in New York City, as she argues, were far greater than passing dance trends; they in fact laid the foundation for the twentieth century's social dancing practices throughout the United States. By looking at dance as social practice across conventional genre and race lines, this book demonstrates that modern social dancing, like Western modernity itself, was dependent on the cultural production and labor of African diasporic peoples -- even as they were excluded from its rewards. A cornerstone in Robinson's argument is the changing role of the dance instructor, which was transformed from the proprietor of a small-scale, local dance school at the end of the nineteenth century to a member of a distinct, self-identified social industry at the beginning of the twentieth. Whereas dance studies has been slow to connect early twentieth century dancing with period racial politics, Modern Moves departs radically from prior scholarship on the topic, and in so doing, revises social and African American dance history of this period. Recognizing the rac(ial)ist beginnings of contemporary American social dancing, it offers a window into the ways that dancing throughout the twentieth century has provided a key means through which diverse groups of people have navigated shifting socio-political relations through their bodily movement. Modern Moves asserts that the social practice of modern dancing, with its perceived black origins, empowered displaced people such as migrants and immigrants to grapple with the effects of industrialization, urbanization, and the rise of North American modernity. Far more than simple appropriation, the selling and practicing of "black" dances during the 1910s and 1920s reinforced whiteness as the ideal racial status in America through embodied and rhetorical engagements with period black stereotypes.

“Take Me to Spain”: Australian Imaginings of Spain through Music and Dance by John Whiteoak Pdf

Australians have been transported to an imaginary Spain from at least the 1830s, when cachuchas were first danced on the Sydney stage. In Take Me to Spain John Whiteoak explores the rich tapestry of Australians’ fascination with all thing Spanish, from the voluptuous sensuality of Lola Montez to operas featuring señoritas, toreadors and Gypsies, and from evocative silent and later Spain-themed Hollywood movies to the dazzlingly creative artistry of the flamenco dancers and guitarists who toured Australia in the 1960s and ’70s. Examining the diverse ways that Spanish music and dance have been mediated or hybridised to cater for Australian popular taste, this landmark study reveals how Hispanic traditions have become integral to the cultural history of the nation.
