Socialism and Character by James Leatham Pdf

Excerpt from Socialism and Character: A Contribution Towards a System of Applied Ethics I do not know Of any work on the same lines. I have tried to be both concrete and constructive, believing that the best way to expel anti-social tendencies in thought and action is to instil pro-social ideas and give the reasons for pro-social conduct. As Comte said, Nothing is destroyed until it is replaced and the Vandals are out in such numbers, and their blows fall with such vigour on the fabric Of conventional morality, that some replacement does indeed require to be done. Those who read these papers as they appeared week by week in justice will perhaps notice that the Chapter on the drink question has been omitted, as well as the portion of the second chapter leading up to it. This has been done, not because Of any material change Of opinion on the question, but because such a topic was apart from the constructive aim and character Of the book. L. How I Became a Socialist by J. Stitt Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from How I Became a Socialist: And Other Papers The pamphlets included in this volume were published at various times during the last four years, 1908-1912, while conducting Socialist propaganda in England and the United States. They were never intended as a connected whole. Some of them were delivered on special occasions, as for instance the "Bible Argument for Socialism," to the Methodist preachers of San Francisco. "How I Became a Socialist" was first printed, red hot, off my tongue, in a little paper published for campaign purposes in England. Before the last copies are exhausted, I have had three hundred sets bound for those who wish to preserve them. A new type of propaganda material will appear as the social revolution proceeds. This has had its place, and such of it as may yet prove useful may be reprinted. I count myself happy to have spoken or written anything, to have had any part however small, in this great hour of human trial and triumph. Socialism for Students (Classic Reprint) by Joseph E. Cohen Pdf

Excerpt from Socialism for Students This little work consists of a series of articles reprinted from the columns of "The International Socialist Review," and written in answer to the request of its editor for a study course in Socialism. The aim of the author is to indicate in briefest outline some of the more salient points in the Socialist philosophy, so as to give the reader an inkling into the nature of the modern Socialist movement. At best this treatise can serve only as a framework. The much more important task of rearing the structure remains for the student. It is hoped that the course of reading, suggested in the appendix, will be found of service in this respect. So far as possible the author has followed the beaten path of Socialist thought and purposely tried to avoid phases of the question over which there is serious dispute. Where anything new is offered, of course he alone is responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. History of Socialism in the United States (Classic Reprint) by Morris Hillquit Pdf

Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Revolutionary Socialism: A Study in Socialist Reconstruction The collapse of the dominant moderate Socialism was not a collapse of fundamental Socialism; it was a collapse simply of the contemporary historical expres sion of Socialism, and Socialism itself provides all the materials for the criticism of this collapse and for the reconstruction of Socialism. The Essentials of Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Ira Brown Cross Pdf

Excerpt from The Essentials of Socialism The ordinary volume on socialism is either biased in its presentation of the subject or it covers too small a portion of the field by being an historical sketch, a bit of propaganda literature, or merely a discussion of its theoretical foundation. In the following pages I have endeavored to avoid these objectionable features, in the hope that the volume may serve as a handbook to the busy reader or as a textbook for the classroom. My object has been to cover the field usually discussed and to present the subject in such a manner that the reader or instructor may be free to form and express his own opinions and to elaborate or to curtail any part of the discussion that he may desire. An effort has been made to state fairly and accurately both sides of the issues involved, and although I realize the practical impossibility of attaining this ideal, I cherish the hope that the following statement may prove satisfactory to the advocates as well as to the opponents of this widely discussed and much misunderstood subject. Introduction to Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Forgotten Books,N A Richardson Pdf

Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Kirkup Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Socialism We all know that the propaganda of socialism has been attended with intemperate and violent language with wild opinions which are often inconsistent with the first principles of social order, with revolutionary outbreaks leading to bloodshed, desolation and long-con tinned unrest and suspicion. These things are greatly to be deplored. But we shall be wise if we regard them as symptoms of wide-spread and deep-seated social disease. The best way to cure such disease is to study and remove the causes of it. No physician will have any success in combating a malady if he content him self with suppressing its symptoms. For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the Open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Practicable Socialism by Canon Barnett Pdf

Excerpt from Practicable Socialism: Essays on Social Reform The following Essays have been written at different intervals during our fifteen years' residence in East London. They were written out of the fulness of the moment with a view of giving a voice to some need of which we had become conscious. They do not, there fore, pretend to set forth any system for dealing with the social problem they are simply the voice of the dumb poor, of whose mind it has been our privilege to get some understanding. They are published now in response to the requests of many -to whom they have been some guide in the ways of service, and in the hope that the experience they offer may bring rich and poor together. It will be noticed that two or three great principles underlie all the reforms for which we ask. The equal capacity of all to enjoy the best, the superiority of quiet ways over those of striving and crying, character as the one thing needful are the truths with which we have become familiar, and on these truths we take our stand. Although the Essays do not pretend to form a connected whole, it will be seen that their arrangement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Strength and Weakness of Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Richard T. Ely Pdf

Excerpt from The Strength and Weakness of Socialism The United States has now the opportunity which Germany had twenty years ago. It is not by any means too late for us to escape the situation in which Germany finds herself. However it may be in Germany, the policy of social reform is still practicable among us; but we must always bear in mind the high ideals which social ism has placed before the masses of the people, and which they have absorbed. Timid, half-way measures will not stem the tide of socialism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Socialist Movement (Classic Reprint) by J. Ramsay Macdonald Pdf

Excerpt from The Socialist Movement One of the greatest of the difficulties which beset the path of the Socialist is the refusal on the part of his opponents to give an accu rate statement Oi what Socialism means and what the purpose of Socialism is. The main object of this book is to explain both. The Editors have asked a Conservative to explain Conservatism and a Liberal to interpret Liber alism, and have on the same principle turned to me to write about Socialism. It is, perhaps, best that doctrines which are the objects Of fierce assault should be explained by writers who believe in them, for, whether a doctrine is or is not to have a lasting influence depends not on the success with which clever critics attack some of its outworks, nor on the amount of error which creeps into its popular advocacy, but on the amount of truth which it really con tains, and that is more familiar to friend than to foe.
