Social Wellbeing and the Values of Small-scale Fisheries by Derek S. Johnson,Tim G. Acott,Natasha Stacey,Julie Urquhart Pdf

This book advances discussions of values in fisheries by showing the rich theoretical insights and connections possible when value is grounded in a multi-dimensional social well being approach. Questions of value have long been a central, if often unacknowledged, concern in maritime studies and in research on fisheries. Social scientists have looked at changing perceptions of value as coastal regions and fisheries have industrialized, economic interconnections have deepened, ecosystems have been depleted, shifts in population have occurred, and governance arrangements have been transformed. With a focus on the diverse ways in which small-scale fisheries are valued, the contributions to this volume address these and other themes through cases from numerous countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. “This volume provides a timely contribution to the development of new approaches that seek to capture the complexity of how fisheries can be understood beyond standard mo no-dimensional, and often economic, interpretations. Each chapter makes a clear and stand-alone contribution to conceptual and methodological advancement, and collectively these works cover a wide range of frameworks and schools of thought.” Dr Sarah Coulthard, Senior Lecturer in International Development, Northumbria University, UK “The list of contributing authors [is] impressive and covers a wide geographical range of illustrative examples, [which] helps to demonstrate the global value of small-scale fisheries.” Professor J. Allister McGregor, Professor in Political Economy, the University of Sheffield, UK

Fisheries and Fishermen by Rup Kumar Barman Pdf

Proper management of the natural resources and the rights of the traditional communities to access the natural resources are no doubt important issues in the age of globalization and global warming. This book after critically examining the relationships between the fisheries and the fishermen of pre-colonial and colonial Bengal have raised some critical points regarding the management, production relations and location of the fishermen in post-colonial West Bengal. Post-colonial relationship between the fisheries and the fishermen on the other hand is deeply rooted with the partition of Bengal in 1947. Partition of Bengal had been appeared as a serious challenge to West Bengal due to the huge migration of the (fish eaters) East Bengalese to this province of India. But it supply of fish was not sufficient as Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) had retained its possession over the prosperous fisheries of the region. All attempts of the post-colonial state to mitigate the fish crisis and the question of resettlement of the East Bengali refugee and immigrant traditional fishermen have been critically examined in this work. This book will be highly useful to the fishery scientists, social scientists, historians, politicians, environmentalists, human right activists and to the general readers of the Bengali culture.

Fisheries Development and Management in India, 1785-1986 by Nune Subba Rao Pdf

Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.
