Software Engineering and Middleware by Thomas Gschwind,Cecilia Mascolo Pdf

Middleware provides an integration framework for multiple and potentially - verse computing platforms. It allows developers to engineer distributed appli- tions more easily, providing abstractions and primitives to handle distribution and coordination. Middlewareisconstantlyfacingnewchallenges.Today’sadvancesincomp- ing, including development of pervasive applications, exacerbates the diversity problem, introducing variations not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of environments and device characteristics. Software engineers are the- fore challenged both in the area of the development of new and scalable m- dleware systems, where open, heterogeneous, component-based platforms should provide richer functionality and services, and in the area of application devel- ment, where tools to simplify the use of middleware solutions are necessary. Software Engineering and Middleware is the premier workshop for the - search and practice community of software engineering working in both areas to presentanddiscussnewideasinthis?eld.SEM2004wasthefourthinternational workshop on software engineering and middleware of the EDO/SEM workshop series. Previous workshops of this series were successfully held in 2002, 2000 and 1999. Most of the proceedings have been published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series.

Software Engineering and Middleware by Alberto Coen-Porisini,André van der Hoeck Pdf

The 3rd International Workshop on Software Engineering and Middleware {SEM 2002) was held May 20-21, 2002, in Orlando, Florida, as a co-located event of the 2002 International Conference on Software Engineering. The workshop attracted 30 participants from academic and industrial institutions in many countries. Twenty-seven papers were submitted, of which 15 were accepted to create a broad program covering the topics of architectures, specification, components and adaptations, technologies, and services. The focus of the workshop was on short presentations, with substantial dis cussions afterwards. Thus, we decided to include in this proceedings also a short summary of every technical session, which was written by some of the partici pants at the workshop. The workshop invited one keynote speaker, Bobby Jadhav of CalKey, who presented a talk on the design and use of model-driven architecture and middle ware in industry. We would like to thank all the people who helped organize and run the workshop. In particular, we would like to thank the program committee for their careful reviews of the submitted papers, Wolfgang Emmerich for being an excellent General Chair, and the participants for a lively and interesting workshop.

Middleware for Network Eccentric and Mobile Applications by Benoît Garbinato,Hugo Miranda,Luís Rodrigues Pdf

Middleware is a critical foundation needed to leverage the development of a wide range of mobile and ubiquitous applications. Intrinsic challenges when building such middleware require the combination of expertise from areas like distributed systems, networking, software engineering, and application development. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the main fundamental problems, technologies, paradigms, and solutions of concern to developers of middleware for mobile environments. The contributions are grouped into four parts, on networking and programming issues, communication models, middleware issues, and application issues. Each chapter is structured as a self-contained tutorial, presenting an overview of a specific topic and the state-of-the-art solutions for the related problems. In addition, the book also includes an authoritative reference list. The material has been successfully used in several thematic training schools organized by the ESF MiNEMA (Middleware for Network Eccentric and Mobile Applications) program, and the book's organization and presentation is ideal for an advanced course on middleware.

Demystifying Embedded Systems Middleware by Tammy Noergaard Pdf

This practical technical guide to embedded middleware implementation offers a coherent framework that guides readers through all the key concepts necessary to gain an understanding of this broad topic. It integrates big picture theoretical discussion with down-to-earth advice on successful real-world use via step-by-step examples of each type of middleware implementation. It demystifies core middleware, such as networking protocols, file systems, virtual machines, and databases; more complex middleware that builds upon generic pieces, such as MOM, ORB, and RPC; and integrated middleware software packages, such as embedded JVMs, .NET, and CORBA packages. Technically detailed case studies bring it all together, by providing insight into typical engineering situations readers are likely to encounter. * The only complete guide to middleware, one of the most important AND most widely misunderstood aspects of embedded systems - hundreds of devices, from digital TVs to smart phones, can't function without it! * Offers thorough middleware coverage, including basic theory and core middleware, as well as complex implementations and integrated packages * Detailed case studies, real-world examples, hundreds of diagrams, and a free CD-ROM provide context and aid understanding of embedded middleware

Essential Software Architecture by Ian Gorton Pdf

Job titles like “Technical Architect” and “Chief Architect” nowadays abound in software industry, yet many people suspect that “architecture” is one of the most overused and least understood terms in professional software development. Gorton’s book tries to resolve this dilemma. It concisely describes the essential elements of knowledge and key skills required to be a software architect. The explanations encompass the essentials of architecture thinking, practices, and supporting technologies. They range from a general understanding of structure and quality attributes through technical issues like middleware components and service-oriented architectures to recent technologies like model-driven architecture, software product lines, aspect-oriented design, and the Semantic Web, which will presumably influence future software systems. This second edition contains new material covering enterprise architecture, agile development, enterprise service bus technologies, RESTful Web services, and a case study on how to use the MeDICi integration framework. All approaches are illustrated by an ongoing real-world example. So if you work as an architect or senior designer (or want to someday), or if you are a student in software engineering, here is a valuable and yet approachable knowledge source for you.

Middleware 2008 by Valérie Issarny,Richard E. Schantz Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Middleware Con- rence, held in Leuven, Belgium during December 1–4, 2008. This year marked the ninth rendition of this annual conference in its current format initially - opted in 1998, aspiring to serve as the premier venue focusing exclusively on important middleware results. A lot has happened over the intervening 10-year span. Middleware has become pervasive in an increasinglyinterconnected world, with its concepts now securely embedded in the notional architectures driving forward the information age. The conference continues to be a focal point for important new initiatives and results for new generations of middleware. With each succeeding year, it has become an even more competitive publishing venue, further extending its selectivity this year as well. Of the 117 submissions, - ly 21 were able to receive acceptance invitations, for an acceptance rate of less than18%. Competitiveindeed. Additionally, thesesubmissionscontinuetocome from all over the globe, spanning authors from 23 countries. A truly world-wide endeavor. But other things have also changed as we turn the corner on the ?rst decade of this conference. In many ways, middleware has achieved signi?cant success where it really counts: in terms of technical innovations, advanced capabilities, successful ideas, and ?elded systems which permeate society, industry, gov- nment, and academia. With this success comes maturity.

Agent-Oriented Software Engineering XI by Danny Weyns,Marie-Pierre Gleizes Pdf

Since the mid 1980s, software agents and multi-agent systems have grown into a very active area of research and also commercial development activity. One of the limiting factors in industry take-up of agent-technology, however, is the lack of adequate software engineering support. The Agent-Oriented Software Engineering Workshop, AOSE, focuses on the synergies and cross fertilization between software engineering and agent research. This volume presents both thoroughly revised selected papers from the AOSE 2010 workshop held at AAMAS 2010 in Toronto, Canada in May 2010 as well as invited articles by leading researchers in the field. The papers cover a broad range of topics related to software engineering and agent-based systems, with particular attention to the integration of concepts and techniques from multi-agent systems with conventional engineering approaches on the one hand, and to the integration of agent-oriented software engineering and methodologies with conventional engineering processes on the other hand.
