Landscapes viewed from afar have a timeless quality that is soothing to the human spirit. Yet a tranquil wilderness scene is but a snapshot in the steady stream of surficial change. Wind, water and human activities reshape the landscape by means of gradual to catastrophic and usually irreversible events. Much of this change destroys past landscapes, but at some times and places, landscapes are buried in the rock record. This work is dedicated to the discovery of past landscapes and their life through the fossil record of soils. A long history of surficial changes extending back almost to the origin of our planet can be deciphered from the study of these buried soils, or paleosols. Some rudiments of this history, and our place in it, are outlined in a final section of this book. But first it is necessary to learn something of the language of soils, of what happens to them when buried in the rock record and which of the forces of nature can be confidently reconstructed from their remains. Much of this preliminary material is borrowed from soil science, but throughout emphasis is laid on features that provide most reliable evidence of landscapes during the distant geological past. This book has evolved primarily as a text for senior level university courses in paleopedology: the study of fossil soils.

Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of June, 1895 The records showing the conditions in the West are all commented upon directly under the diagrams. AS a rule, during th1s favorable season the fields under ordinary cultivation and those which had been subsoiled and subsequently cultivated do not Show very different mois ture conditions. In some places the-effect of cultivation is not appar ent upon the moisture content of Soils. For reasons which have already been, given it is not to be expected that cultivation would Show a very marked effect upon the amount of. Moisture in the soil either in a very dry season or in a very favorable sea-son with frequent rains. The time when it would have its maximum effect would be after a wet season and when a dry period was coming on. The moisture content at this time should fall much more gradually in the cultivated than in the uncultivated land. This is shown to a slight extent in some of the records, but not to such an extent as would seem likely to occur under the most intelligent Cultivation of the soil. The small amount of data which has been collected is not sufficient, however, to warrant a close and final judgment in this matter. Farmland abandonment is one of the major land use changes occurring in many rural territories, especially in mountainous regions. Without intervention (passive land management), farmland abandonment leads to an expansion of shrubs and forest on formerly cultivated hillslopes and grazing areas. All these land use changes affect the hydrological and geomorphological dynamics of slopes and channels, having important implications for water resources and soil conservation. However, the heterogeneity of abandoned scenarios complicates the assessment of farmland abandonment on water resources and soil conservation. In this Special Issue, we will publish papers that examine the hydrological and geomorphological consequences of farmland abandonment in one (or several) of these abandoned scenarios. Our final purpose is to help water and land managers to select the most sustainable strategy (in terms of water resources and soil conservation) for the land management of marginal rural areas.
