Soldiers Live by Glen Cook Pdf

Glen Cook's epic fantasy noir Chronicles of the Black Company continues with Soldiers Live. When sorcerers and demigods go to war, those wars are fought by mercenaries, "dog soldiers," grunts in the trenches. And the stories of those soldiers are the stories of Glen Cook's hugely popular "Black Company" novels. If the Joseph Heller of Catch-22 were to tell the story of The Lord of the Rings, it might read like the Black Company books. There is nothing else in fantasy like them. Now, at last, Cook brings the "Glittering Stone" cycle within the Black Company series to an end . . . but an end with many other tales left to tell. As Soldiers Live opens, Croaker is military dictator of all the Taglias, and no Black Company member has died in battle for four years. Croaker figures it can't last. He's right. For, of course, many of the Company's old adversaries are still around. Narayan Singh and his adopted daughter--actually the offspring of Croaker and the Lady--hope to bring about the apocalyptic Year of the Skulls. Other old enemies like Shadowcatcher, Longshadow, and Howler are also ready to do the Company harm. And much of the Company is still recovering from the fifteen years many of them spent in a stasis field. Then a report arrives of an evil spirit, a forvalaka, that has taken over one of their old enemies. It attacks them at a shadowgate--setting off a chain of events that will bring the Company to the edge of apocalypse and, as usual, several steps beyond. A Catalogue of Saddletree Indian Soldiers Life Portraits by Rev. Dr. Carolyn Cummings-Woriax Pdf

A Catalogue of Saddletree Indian Soldiers Life Portraits By: Rev. Dr. Carolyn Cummings-Woriax In her latest book, Rev. Dr. Carolyn Cummings-Woriax has endeavored to bring to life the stories of the descendants of the early Revolutionary War Patriots of the Saddletree Community (Lumberton, North Carolina), as reflected upon in her first book, Revolutionary War Patriots: Bladen, Robeson, Cumberland, Sampson, and Duplin Counties, NC. This document, A Catalogue of Saddletree Indian Soldiers' Life Portraits, not only brings to life the former patriots' descendants, it continues to reveal the migration routes of the soldiers from the Saddletree Community throughout the United States, and beyond. Despite the racial and social injustices prevalent inside and outside of their communities, these Saddletree soldiers left the comfort of their culture, family and homes for the mission in service to the people of the United States of America, and its allies, during a pivotal time of American history when these soldiers and their families resided on the fringe of socioeconomic standards. During this exploit, the author examines why the commonality failed to continue in practice, or if the descendants knew about the brotherhood of the early soldiers. She found, through her investigative research, that these lifestyle changes in Robeson County, NC, began during the eras of the Reconstruction Period and the Civil War. Rev. Dr. Cummings-Woriax would like to offer thanks and a heartfelt appreciation to Colonel Thomas Wynn for his dedication and contributions in initiating the Memorial Living War at the Saddletree Community Building. This catalogue serves as a humble effort to give thanks to the many who served from the Saddletree and surrounding communities. Through this endeavor the author seeks to continue the legacies of those who went to war and never returned (Killed in Action, Prisoners of War, Missing in Action, Lost at Sea) or returned home with the seen and/or unseen wounds of war and service to the country.

Soldiers in Revolt by Maggie Dwyer Pdf

Soldiers in Revolt examines the understudied phenomenon of military mutinies in Africa. Through interviews with former mutineers in Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, and The Gambia, the book provides a unique and intimate perspective on those who take the risky decision to revolt. This view from the lower ranks is key to comprehending the internal struggles that can threaten a military's ability to function effectively. Maggie Dwyer's detailed accounts of specific revolts are complemented by an original dataset of West African mutinies covering more than fifty years, allowing for the identification of trends. Her book shows the complex ways mutineers often formulate and interpret their grievances against a backdrop of domestic and global politics. Just as mutineers have been influenced by the political landscape, so too have they shaped it. Mutinies have challenged political and military leaders, spurred social unrest, led to civilian casualties, threatened peacekeeping efforts and, in extreme cases, resulted in international interventions. Soldiers in Revolt offers a better understanding of West African mutinies and mutinies in general, valuable not only for military studies but for anyone interested in the complex dynamics of African states.

International Law and Child Soldiers by Gus Waschefort Pdf

This book commences with an analysis of the current state of child soldiering internationally. Thereafter the proscriptive content of contemporary norms on the prohibition of the use and recruitment of child soldiers is evaluated, so as to determine whether these norms are capable of better enforcement. An 'issues-based' approach is adopted, in terms of which no specific regime of law, such as international humanitarian law (IHL), is deemed dominant. Instead, universal and regional human rights law, international criminal law and IHL are assessed cumulatively, so as to create a mutually reinforcing web of protection. Ultimately, it is argued that the effective implementation of child soldier prohibitive norms does not require major changes to any entity or functionary engaged in such prevention; rather, it requires the constant reassessment and refinement of all such entities and functionaries, and here, some changes are suggested. International judicial, quasi-judicial and non-judicial entities and functionaries most relevant to child soldier prevention are critically assessed. Ultimately the conclusions reached are assessed in light of a case study on the use and recruitment of child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
