The Solitudes by Luis de Gongora Pdf

An epic masterpiece of world literature, in a magnificent new translation by one of the most acclaimed translators of our time. A towering figure of the Renaissance, Luis de Góngora pioneered poetic forms so radically different from the dominant aesthetic of his time that he was derided as "the Prince of Darkness." The Solitudes, his magnum opus, is an intoxicatingly lush novel-in-verse that follows the wanderings of a shipwrecked man who has been spurned by his lover. Wrenched from civilization and its attendant madness, the desolate hero is transported into a natural world that is at once menacing and sublime. In this stunning edition Edith Grossman captures the breathtaking beauty of a work that represents one of the high points of poetic achievement in any language.

Journal of a Solitude by May Sarton Pdf

The poet and author’s “beautiful . . . wise and warm” journal of time spent in her New Hampshire home alone with her garden, her books, the seasons, and herself (Eugenia Thornton, Cleveland Plain Dealer). “Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is richness of self.” —May Sarton May Sarton’s parrot chatters away as Sarton looks out the window at the rain and contemplates returning to her “real” life—not friends, not even love, but writing. In her bravest and most revealing memoir, Sarton casts her keenly observant eye on both the interior and exterior worlds. She shares insights about everyday life in the quiet New Hampshire village of Nelson, the desire for friends, and need for solitude—both an exhilarating and terrifying state. She likens writing to “cracking open the inner world again,” which sometimes plunges her into depression. She confesses her fears, her disappointments, her unresolved angers. Sarton’s garden is her great, abiding joy, sustaining her through seasons of psychic and emotional pain. Journal of a Solitude is a moving and profound meditation on creativity, oneness with nature, and the courage it takes to be alone. Both uplifting and cathartic, it sweeps us along on Sarton’s pilgrimage inward. This ebook features an extended biography of May Sarton.

Private Avenues, Born of Solitude by Michael S Ball Pdf

From the first I included poetic lines, from my novella ‘Stand and deliver, to my setting in the places of my childhood, my longest tale, Upon this tree. Either spoken or as a feed to a chapter. An example is the poem 'Remember me (included in full in the 'Love' section) Almost a biographical theme, I mostly write in rhythm and rhyme, a natural instance that appeals to me, though I feel it isn’t a necessity in story verses, where it can appear tedious. Like most poets this selection comes from life, love and memories, recollections dear to my heart, whether it may be the love of nature, film, music, yearnings to love, or simple nonsense, where throughout any merit I attribute to God and his encouragement. Also I feel I must add the helping hand of a precious Godly soul, Patricia Tijerina, whose inspiration and encouragement was immeasurable. I hope all who venture to read a part of my life find pleasure and enjoyment in doing so, to know and sense a little of the rapture I convey, whether it be my innermost feelings, or the life-long love of nature, film and childhood. Written under pressure that I assume most could not bear, this book of verse is long overdue. I hope it gives an insight into my life, feelings and memories. Thank you to all who read my first volume of verse, knowing part of my life and ever loving memories, interlaced with the love of nature, film and lighter moments. Michael S Ball

The Land of Silence by May Sarton Pdf

A splendid collection from a true master It is often in solitude that a writer begins to understand herself. This becomes evident in The Land of Silence, May Sarton’s collection of poems previously published in the New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine, as Sarton searches for solitude and tries to understand the regrets and ecstasies associated with it. Images from these poems linger in the mind’s eye: a bird, a dream. Sarton’s verse feels real, yet it represents something more. Published in 1953, the year after Sarton won the Reynolds Lyric Award of the Poetry Society of America, The Land of Silence presents a poet at peak form.

The Art, Literature and Music of Solitude by Julian Stern Pdf

This book presents a thematic analysis of various aspects of solitude, silence and loneliness, from the ancient world to the present day, explored thematically with consideration to the links between aloneness to other social and political issues. The themes include exile (expulsion from a community), ecstasy (getting 'out of oneself') and enstasy (being comfortable within oneself), to the Romantic idea of the artist as solitary. There is work on aloneness in and through nature, especially the importance of natural settings for positive experiences of solitude. A central theme is alienation and its emotions, with the idea of loneliness and the rejected self being a more modern experience. The book explores modernism and postmodernism as presenting new forms of solitude in the twentieth century, and how, more recently, there have been attempts to 'recover' the self, through therapeutic uses of the arts. All of these types and experiences of aloneness are described through the lenses of artistic, literary and musical forms of expression, as aloneness is not only explored and articulated through these art forms, but is in many ways created through these art forms.

Absolute Solitude by Dulce Maria Loynaz Pdf

In the first comprehensive selection and translation of Dulce María Loynaz's poetry, James O'Connor invites us to hear the haunting voice of Cuba's celebrated poet, whom the Nobel Laureate Juan Ramón Jiménez terms in his Foreword, "archaic and new...tender, weightless, rich in abandon." Widely published in Spain during the 1950s, Loynaz's poetry was almost forgotten in Cuba after the Revolution. International recognition came to her late: at the age of ninety she was living in seclusion in Havana when the Royal Spanish Academy awarded her the 1992 Cervantes Prize, the highest literary accolade in the Spanish language. The first English publication of her work, Absolute Solitude contains a selection of poems from each of Loynaz's books, including the acclaimed prose poems from Poems with No Names, a selection of posthumously published work. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Love, Solitude, and the Face of Death by Edith Södergran Pdf

Edith Irene Saodergran, one of the first modernist poets within Swedish-language literature, was born in St. Petersburg in 1892 and died in Raivola, a Finnish town near the Russian border, in 1923. Her first published poems were not well received by the conservative critics because of their free-verse style. At her death from tuberculosis, which she contracted as a teenager, she was thirty-one years old and known only within the narrow confines of the Swedish-speaking literary world; but after her death she became recognized and appreciated, and she is now considered one of the greatest poets in Swedish literature. Her poetry has been translated into some thirty languages and her passionate lyric voice continues to win new readers all over the world.

The Philosophy of Creative Solitudes by David Jones Pdf

What is solitude, why do we crave and fear it, and how do we distinguish it properly from loneliness? It lies at the core of the lives of philosophers and their self-reflective contemplations, and it is the enabling (and disabling) condition that allows us to seriously question how to live creatively and meaningfully. David Farrell Krell is one of the decisive philosophical voices on how philosophers can creatively engage their solitudes. The scale and range of his understanding of solitudes are taken up in this book by some of the most distinguished Continental philosophers. Authors address the problem of solitude from different angles, and imagine how to face and respond creatively to it. Blending philosophical narrative and straightforward philosophical treatises, this book provides inspiration for contemplation of our own versions of solitude and their creative potentials. Some authors focus on the work of historical figures in philosophy or poetry, such as Heidegger and Hölderlin, while others deal more directly with Krell's work as exemplary of their own imaginings of creative solitudes. Other authors respond more personally and creatively in their demonstrations of how we can, and must, seek our solitudes. Including an original chapter by David Farrell Krell, this book is an invigorating meditation on the possibility of being philosophical about a life through solitude, and the meaning of this powerfully resonant and universal human experience.
