Excerpt from Some Account of the Worshipful Company of Skinners of London: Being the Guild or Fraternity of Corpus Christi The following pages have grown out of a Paper which was read at a Meeting of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society, held at Skinners' Hall, on the 28th April, 1874. It was afterwards published in the Transactions of the Society, with considerable additions, and privately distributed, principally among members of the Court of the Skinners' Company. It is now out of print. In response to requests of many friends that an enlarged and revised edition should be prepared, it seemed to me desirable to improve upon my original publication by adding extracts from the old Court Books and the Renter Wardens' accounts of the 16th and 17th centuries, and to supplement the early memorials of the Skinners' Company (which form the greater part of the volume) with some account of the Company's latter-day work, in connection chiefly with education. I have much pleasure in acknowledging my obligation to the Court of the Company for assisting in the publication of the book, and in expressing my sincere and hearty thanks to all who have individually taken part in its compilation. Medieval books that survive today have been through a lot: singed by fire, mottled by mold, eaten by insects, annotated by readers, cut into fragments, or damaged through well-intentioned preservation efforts. In this book, Michelle Warren tells the story of one such manuscript—an Arthurian romance with textual origins in twelfth-century England now diffused across the twenty-first century internet. This trajectory has been propelled by a succession of technologies—from paper manufacture to printing to computers. Together, they have made literary history itself a cultural technology indebted to colonial capitalism. Bringing to bear media theory, medieval literary studies, and book history, Warren shows how digital infrastructures change texts and books, even very old ones. In the process, she uncovers a practice of "tech medievalism" that weaves through the history of computing since the mid-twentieth century; metaphors indebted to King Arthur and the Holy Grail are integral to some of the technologies that now sustain medieval books on the internet. Although the anonymous pious Middle English romances and Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte Darthur' have rarely been studied in relation to each other, they in fact share at least two thematic concerns, vocabularies of suffering and genealogical concerns, as this book demonstrates. By examining a broad cultural and political framework stretching from Richard II's deposition to the end of the Wars of the Roses through the prism of piety, politics and penitence, the author draws attention to the specific circumstances in which Sir Isumbras, Sir Gowther, Roberd of Cisely, Henry Lovelich's 'History of the Holy Grail' and Malory's 'Morte' were read in fifteenth-century England. In the case of the pious romances this implies a study of their reception long after their original composition or translation centuries earlier; in Lovelich's case, an examination of metropolitan culture leads to an opening of the discussion to French romance models as well as English chronicle writing.
