SOME ASPECTS OF EDUCATION IN EARLY INDIA by Dr. Arun kumar Pdf

India has a rich tradition of learning and education from the time immemorial. These were handed over generation to generation either through oral or written media. The basic characteristics of Ancient or Hindu civilization is that it has been moulded and shaped the course of its history more by religious than by political or economic influences. The Early Educational System in India was based on the conception of Brahmacharya, which laid greater emphasis on carya than mere learning. The system was established on the tie of constant association between the teacher and the taught. The Sanskrit word for pupil was antevasin, while acarya stood for the preceptor. A student was known by the word Brahmachari. The religious student belonging to the caste of Brahmana, Kshatriya or Vaisya was known by the term Varni. As a pupil, he was known as Chatra because his duty was always to be at his teacher's service and to protect him from any harm just like an umbrella. The antevasin was to lead the life of a regular Brahmacharin in the house of his teacher. Special hostels for female students had also come into existence known as Chatrisala i.e., Lady's Hostel.

The Educational Heritage of Ancient India by Sahana Singh Pdf

Just a thousand years ago, India was dotted with universities across its length and breadth, where international students flocked to gain credentials in advanced education. This illustrated book describes how these multi-disciplinary centers of learning existed in several forms such as forest universities, brick-and-mortar universities and temple universities. It examines the funding for these citadels of learning and their graduation ceremonies. The process by which India’s ancient systems of education helped to fuel a knowledge revolution around the world with its manuscripts, forming the basis for monographs and academic papers, is explained with references. The marauding incursions by Muslim invaders, which disrupted the idyllic world of university learning in India, followed by European colonization, which led to further erosion and degeneration of India’s traditional learning systems, have been taken up in some detail. Readers will get a snapshot view of India's education system down the ages from ancient to modern times.

A History of Education in Ancient India by Nogendra Nath Mazumder Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Education in Ancient India The general outline of the book was first worked out in class-room lectures. It has subsequently developed into the present work. The subject-matter of the book is so complex that I feel it should have been undertaken by abler hands. The main object of this publication is to meet the demand for a small Hand-book that will give a clear and systematic account of the ideal and the system of education in ancient India, and also to remove some grave misapprehension that seems to exist about the Hindu ideals of education in the minds of some eminent foreign writers. Dr. Graves of the Ohio State University following Mr. Davidson remarks that "despite all the Hindu's fineness of intellect and his idealistic religion, India seems typically 'barbarian'". It is really unfortunate that such a remark should have come from such a man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Right to Education in India by Florian Matthey-Prakash Pdf

What does it mean for education to be a fundamental right, and how may children benefit from it? Surprisingly, even when the right to education was added to the Indian Constitution as Article 21A, this question barely received any attention. The book identifies justiciability—or, more broadly, enforceability—as the most important feature of Article 21A, meaning that children and their parents must be provided with means to effectively claim their right from the State; otherwise, it would remain a ‘right’ only on paper. The book highlights how lack of access to the Indian judiciary means that the constitutional promise of justiciability remains unfulfilled. It deals with the possible alternative means the State may provide for the poor to claim the benefits under Article 21A, and identifies the grievance-redress mechanism created by the ‘Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009’ as a potential system of enforcement. Even though this system is found to be deficient, the book concludes with an optimistic outlook, hoping that rights advocates may, in the future, focus on improving such mechanisms for legal empowerment.
