Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Allen Glenn Pdf

Excerpt from Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them IN the following pages the plan pursued in the first volume of Some Colonial Homes and those who lived in them, has been closely followed, the only deviation being the introduction of homes of national fame, as Mount Vernon and Monticello. The great interest attaching to these is, perhaps, a sufficient apology for turning for a moment from the humbler to the greater folk, and for introducing, in one instance - that of Monticello - a resi dence finished only some years subsequent to that period at which all things Colonial are supposed to terminate. The reader, however, will find many examples of several periods of earlier architecture, and all such houses have a story worth the telling. There is, indeed, scarcely a house standing now, built during Colonial days, that is not, in one way or another intimately connected with some person, the actor in an important event in the history of our country. Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them by Thomas Allen Glenn Pdf

Excerpt from Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them: With Genealogies of the Various Families Mentioned Out of all this confusion there arose a host of religious doctrines, each one clamoring for its rival's life. The con verts to these peculiar views were singularly tenacious of their several beliefs, and quite ready to suffer the ultimate of martyrdom rather than yield a single inch to the existing laws or to their opponent's arguments and persecutions. These followers of the Truth, indeed, appear to have taken the same savage delight in suffering, Often without reason or purpose, as they did in tormenting those who differed with them as to the straightest path to heaven. To this social upheaval and chaos of beliefs we owe, in great measure, the first substantial settlement of the American Plantations. Famous Colonial Houses (Classic Reprint) by Paul M. Hollister Pdf

Excerpt from Famous Colonial Houses It is a sermon not only for aliens, but for all of us. We should all see these houses, or if we cannot see them, we should know them as some of them are made known to us in this book. Our land is a better land for having them within its borders, and we will be better citizens for an acquaintance with them. The day on which I went to Monticello was beautiful, yet, save my companion, no one else was there. I wonder how many of the politicians who, with the vox humana stop pulled out, acclaim the name of Jefferson as founder of the Democratic Party, have made the short pilgrimage from Washington to Charlottesville to visit the house he lived in and the grave where he is buried. Our Colonial Homes (Classic Reprint) by Samuel Adams Drake Pdf

Excerpt from Our Colonial Homes One end which I proposed to myself in this book, besides presenting house and home historically, was to gather up as many distinct types Of the colonial architecture of New England as pos sible, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation, as it seems to me nothing could give half so clear a picture of a century and a half of colonial life. It was this idea alone which could give cohesion to a series of sketches having little connection in themselves, except as recording fragments of history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of them were written some years ago for Appleton'sjoumml; but by the addition of several new subjects, besides re-writing the old ones, the collection bears out, I think, the idea conveyed by the title of our colonial homes. Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware (Classic Reprint) by John Martin Hammond Pdf

Excerpt from Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware Some people collect old furniture, some old books. I for many years have been a collector of old houses within easy travelling distance of my home in Balti more, and the best of my finds are to be found in this book. He who would collect old houses must possess much enthusiasm, a determination that will not be dis couraged, and a fine power of walking. Fully one-half of the points that he visits because of hearsay will be found to be without interest, and of the others that he seeks out only a few insignificant facts will at first be ascertainable. A continual source of surprise to one who searches for colonial homes is how little is known about them even in the immediate neighborhood in which they have stood for so many years. Some Colonial Homesteads and Their Stories (Classic Reprint) by Marion Harland Pdf

Excerpt from Some Colonial Homesteads and Their Stories HE stories that make romantic the C010 nial Homesteads described in this work, were collected during visits paid by myself to those historical shrines. The task was a labor of love throughout, and made yet more de lightful by the generous kindness of those to whom I applied for assistance in gathering, classifying, and sifting materials for my book. Family records, rare old histories, manuscript letters, valuable pictures, and personal remi niscences, were placed at my disposal with gracious readiness that almost deluded me, the recipient, into the belief that mine was the choicer blessing of the giver. The pilgrimage to each storied home was fraught with pleasures which I may not share with the public. I have conscientiously studied accuracy in the historical outlines that frame my sketches. Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by German Woodhead Pdf

Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Old Colonial Houses in Maine by Emma Huntington Nason Pdf

Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 The sketches in this volume present a brief record of some of the old colonial houses that are now standing in Maine, and that were built prior to 1776. The work does not profess to be complete in its lists, nor exhaustive in its details, but rather to describe certain buildings that represent the development of the early colonial dwelling from the ancient log garrison house and first framed cottage to the grandest of our colonial mansions, and to give, if possible, a brief glimpse into the lives of the people who converted these houses into homes. Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. If the following sketches give to the reader a characteristic picture of our early colonial homes and of the life of the men and women who dwelt therein, the mission of the book will be fulfilled. On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses.
