For all those kids who survived the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's, these stories from the good old days may strike a familiar chord. Why, When I Was a Kid is a collection of heartwarming short stories from the true life experiences of a normal American country boy. These autobiographical ramblings offer a glimpse into a rural lifestyle that may inspire your own trip down memory lane. As you venture through the pages of this book you will be brought to laughter as the author guides you through story titles such as, 'Dirt Clods and Aspen Trees', 'Cowpies and Lady Fingers', 'Buttermilk and Bologna Sandwiches', and 'Skunk in the Backseat', all of which will paint a descriptive picture of a young boy's escapades. Then tender stories like 'Hero Worship', 'My New Cowboy Hat', or 'Pautzke Eggs' may touch your heart and bring you to tears as similar memories of our own come to the surface. These 'not so everyday' experiences range from a kid's perspective of life to a dad's realization that his daughter has grown up. We Shall See About It by Ambrosine Aureliano Pdf

We Shall See About It is the singular and fantastic tale of a well-versed chit and the hazards she confronts in a botanic garden. Watch! as Cliff sallies forth to do battle with peevish, mythical beings and surly, nightmarish beasts. Squirm! as she takes on the most caustically fearsome creature of all: her Great-aunt Vestia at teatime. Thrill! to her adventures which include four quarrelsome cats who would prefer to be elsewhere, and a petulant Shih Tzu who would rather be napping. Salivate! While any number of delectable pastries are described, and Gawk in wonder! when Cliff is disabused of any "iffy" notions she might have had about life being a cakewalk. With elements of Greek mythology and Hindu iconography thrown in, it's certain to be a piquant account worth the reading. Or at least the skimming. Possibly a cursory glance or two while flopped out on the sofa. A choice no longer has to be made between cates and dainties, because We Shall See About It dishes out ample servings of both.

Fellow Creatures by Christine M. Korsgaard Pdf

Christine M. Korsgaard presents a compelling new view of humans' moral relationships to the other animals. She defends the claim that we are obligated to treat all sentient beings as what Kant called "ends-in-themselves". Drawing on a theory of the good derived from Aristotle, she offers an explanation of why animals are the sorts of beings for whom things can be good or bad. She then turns to Kant's argument for the value of humanity to show that rationality commits us to claiming the standing of ends-in-ourselves, in two senses. Kant argued that as autonomous beings, we claim to be ends-in-ourselves when we claim the standing to make laws for ourselves and each other. Korsgaard argues that as beings who have a good, we also claim to be ends-in-ourselves when we take the things that are good for us to be good absolutely and so worthy of pursuit. The first claim commits us to joining with other autonomous beings in relations of moral reciprocity. The second claim commits us to treating the good of every sentient creature as something of absolute importance. Korsgaard argues that human beings are not more important than the other animals, that our moral nature does not make us superior to the other animals, and that our unique capacities do not make us better off than the other animals. She criticizes the "marginal cases" argument and advances a new view of moral standing as attaching to the atemporal subjects of lives. She criticizes Kant's own view that our duties to animals are indirect, and offers a non-utilitarian account of the relation between pleasure and the good. She also addresses a number of directly practical questions: whether we have the right to eat animals, experiment on them, make them work for us and fight in our wars, and keep them as pets; and how to understand the wrong that we do when we cause a species to go extinct.

The Thousand Deaths of Mr Small by Gerald Kersh Pdf

' The Thousand Deaths Of Mr Small is the best novel that Gerald Kersh has yet written... Charles Small, successful advertising expert and miserable man, turns over in his mind the 'stinking, sour, stagnant, untransmitted mass' which is his life... This book has a rich, warm quality; long and full of detail, it teems with humour, satire, incident, character; in a word, with life.' Yorkshire Post 'It see-saws from side-splitting dialogue to such catalogues of loathing and revulsion as have rarely been seen in print, from outrageous farce to sudden compassion for the Smalls of this world, who find Hell enough in 'the eternal contemplation of themselves as they made themselves.'' New York Herald Tribune 'With brilliant descriptive power and an emetic vocabulary, [Kersh] has produced a tormented and forceful work.' Commonweal
