Some First Steps in Human Progress (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Starr Pdf
Excerpt from Some First Steps in Human Progress The word "anthropology" from its derivation means, of course, a discourse concerning man. It has been defined by the great French naturalist, De Quatrefages, as "the natural history of man." It is, then, scientific study of man of the same sort as the scientific study which a botanist pursues concerning plants and the zoologist concerning animals. In its most comprehensive meaning it includes the study of the physical man and of his mental, social, and religious natures. It is a broad field; not easily limited. It includes a number of subordinate sciences, such as somatology or physical anthropology, ethnology, prehistoric archaeology, and culture history. It is not the intention of the author in writing this book to discuss the whole field of anthropology, but simply to consider some points in culture history. It shall be our aim to trace simply some few of the first steps in human progress. Primitive man, whatever his capacity for learning and achievement, faced an unknown world. He was to subdue nature; to do so he must solve many problems. If we look at the great progress and advancement which we, in America, have made within one hundred years we may see how the solution of one problem aids to solve a new problem; how the ground gained to-day serves simply as a point from which to advance to occupy new ground to-morrow. This progress is now marked and rapid; when it began it was slow and feeble. A part of this book was originally presented in the form of lectures to a Chautauqua audience. Linguistic Relativities by John Leavitt Pdf
There are more than six thousand human languages, each one unique. For the last five hundred years, people have argued about how important language differences are. This book traces that history and shows how language differences have generally been treated either as of no importance or as all-important, depending on broader approaches taken to human life and knowledge. It was only in the twentieth century, in the work of Franz Boas and his students, that an attempt was made to engage seriously with the reality of language specificities. Since the 1950s, this work has been largely presented as yet another claim that language differences are all-important by cognitive scientists and philosophers who believe that such differences are of no importance. This book seeks to correct this misrepresentation and point to the new directions taken by the Boasians, directions now being recovered in the most recent work in psychology and linguistics.

Sri Aurobindo's Vision of Integral Human Development by Monica Gupta Pdf
This book explores the integral vision of human development contained in the original works of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It delves into multiple layers of the human personality as envisaged by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and explores a new developmental science of consciousness based on the practice of Integral Yoga. The book examines the major metatheoretical conceptions that shape the contemporary discipline of developmental psychology and discusses the ways in which Sri Aurobindo’s philosophical and psychological perspective can help break fresh ground for developmental theorisation and research by extending the current understanding of the human evolutionary potential. The author proposes a new agenda for human development which brings together the key ideas of integral individual and collective development and informs practices in the areas of counselling, education, parenting and self-development. This book will be of special interest for researchers of developmental psychology, human development, counselling psychology, philosophy, social work and education.

The Aptitude Myth by Cornelius N. Grove, Ed.D., independent scholar, author of "The Aptitude Myth" (2013) Pdf
The Aptitude Myth addresses the decline in American children’s mastery of critical school subjects. It contends that a contributing cause for this decline derives from many Americans’ ways of thinking about children’s learning: They believe that school performance is determined very largely by innate aptitude.
