Somebody Else's Summer by Jean Little Pdf

A wise, tender, and funny summer adventure story from one of Canada's most beloved writers for children. On a flight from Vancouver to Toronto, two girls meet, forming an unlikely friendship. Tall, athletic Samantha is going to spend the summer with a family friend while her father is in South America. Alexis, a shy girl who likes books, is being sent to a horse farm to learn how to ride while her mother and stepfather are travelling in Australia. As they talk, Sam and Alex realize they'd each rather be doing what the other is: Sam's elderly hostess runs a bookshop, and the family Alex is staying with is young and boisterous. By the time their flight lands in Toronto, the girls have hatched their plot. They're going to trade places for the summer. After all, the people they're going to visit have never met them, and their own parents are far away and hard to contact. But will they manage to pull it off? For how long? And with what consequences?

Warm Dust, Summer Rain by Gloria Nero Pdf

When Doug Rainey, a despairing poet, whom the author draws as a central character, drowns in a New York City reservoir he leaves sorrow and mystery in his wake. Warm Dust, Summer Rain deals in an arresting and unique way with the sometimes strange behavior of those left behind to grieve. Deirdre Rainey, the hauntingly beautiful and enigmatic sister of Rainey knows no barriers between the living and the dead. Neither does she abide by the rules of conduct set by society. Eugene Rainey, the poets son desires only to fill his fathers shoes. The lovely widow, Claudia Rainey, cannot see herself existing without a Rainey. And Gabriel Orr, the outsider, not only finds himself irrevocably involved with Raineys little family but fears the poets spirit has entered him. Set in the Catskill Mountain watershed region which Gloria Nero characteristically pictures with pastoral charm and incorporeal atmosphere, there is an intrinsic connection between story and place. And too, she creates a realistic intensity and penetration into the lives of the individuals she portrays. Ultimately a novel of passion and forbidden love, this is a startling book.

Batting Order by Mike Lupica Pdf

A New York Times bestseller From acclaimed author of the Home Team series Mike Lupica comes an inspiring novel about the heart and soul of baseball. On or off the field, Ben and Matt couldn’t be more different. Ben Roberson is an all-or-nothing player: he’s big, he’s bold, and he’s brash. Ben’s swing can hit a ball right out of the park—but that’s if he can get a hit at all. Matt Baker is small, and shy, and his stutter has him avoiding the spotlight—even if he’s the best all-rounder on the team. But while Matt knows he’s got the chops, a part of him has always envied “Big Ben” and his attention-grabbing charm. So it’s a total shock when Ben asks Matt to help him work on his swing. Because Ben can’t put the ball into play, and his showboating comes at the expense of the team. And even though Matt’s trying to help, Ben doesn’t seem to take him seriously, especially when it means toning things down. The end of the season is fast approaching—is there enough time for Ben to realize bigger isn’t always better? For Matt to understand that sometimes, being the bigger person means standing up for yourself? Or will they have to accept defeat?

Across The Continent - A Summer's Journey To The Rocky Mountains, The Mormons And The Pacific States by Samuel Bowles Pdf

Samuel Bowles, editor of the Springfield Republican newspaper, accompanied Speaker of the House of Representatives Schuyler Colfax on this trans-continental trip in 1865. The pair travelled by rail from Springfield to Atchison, then by stagecoach through Oregon and Washington to Placerville, California, the easternmost reach of the new Pacific railroad, and then again by rail on to San Francisco. They returned via ship to Panama, across the Isthmus by rail, and home by sea. This early travelogue is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It contains details of Samuel Bowles’s travels through North America and his experiences along the way. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of America.

Like me, he was a casualty of life's cruelty, but we were planets apart. We'd both sought refuge on the island, hoping to find our anchor. One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle Pdf

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In this “magical trip worth taking” (Associated Press), the New York Times bestselling author of In Five Years returns with a powerful novel about the transformational love between mothers and daughters set on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. When Katy’s mother dies, she is left reeling. Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mom, but her best friend and first phone call. She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone. To make matters worse, their planned mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: to Positano, the magical town where Carol spent the summer right before she met Katy’s father. Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone. But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother’s spirit. Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life. And then Carol appears—in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old. Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how—all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back. Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her. She is not exactly who Katy imagined she might be, however, and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue. “Rebecca Serle is known for her powerful stories that tug at the heartstrings—and her latest is just as unforgettable” (Woman’s World) as it effortlessly shows us how to move on after loss, and how the people we love never truly leave us.

Somebody Else's Sky by Jessica Hawkins Pdf

"This is the best slow-burn romance I have ever read."—New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward If I closed my eyes, I could still see them—all blonde sunshine, ocean-blue eyes, and long limbs. The glint of Lake’s gold bracelet. Pink cotton candy on Tiffany’s tongue. My scenery may have changed from heaven to hell, but some things never would: my struggle to do right by both sisters. To let Lake soar. To lift Tiffany up. The sacrifices I made for them, I made willingly. A better man would’ve walked away by now, but I never claimed to be any good. I only promised myself I’d keep enough distance. If I’d learned one thing from my past, it was that love came in different forms. You could love passionately, hurt deep, die young. Or you could provide the kind of firm, steady support someone else could lean on. Lake was everything I wanted, and nothing I could ever have. I was nobody before I knew her and a criminal after. The way to love her was to let her shine—even if it would be for somebody else. Book two in a completed, USA TODAY bestselling love saga.

Symeon Metaphrastes by Christian Høgel Pdf

The first monograph on the most important Byzantine redactor of saints' lives this book offers a detailed study of the life and working methods of Symeon Metaphrastes, who was active towards the end of the tenth century. The importance of the Metaphrastic redaction has often been measured by the amount of damage it did to the late-antique hagiographical texts, but in the present study it is seen as the culmination of long-term developments within this field. The Metaphrastic collection is studied in the context of its predecessors and in the gradual changes that occurred in the production of hagiography, especially as to the social background of authors, commissioners, and even saints. Emphasis is laid on the gradual redistribution, centralisation and upgrading of hagiographical texts that took place in the Greek world. And in this process rewriting is seen as a vehicle for a canonisation which, even if never instituted in Byzantium, was the intention and, to some degree, the outcome of the Metaphrastic redaction. Christian Høgel, PhD, is research fellow at the Institute for Greek and Latin, University of Copenhagen. He has formerly published a.o. Digterjeg'et i hellenistisk og augustisk poesi (The Poetic I in Hellenistic and Augustan poetry, MTF 1992).
