Something from Nothing by Phoebe Gilman Pdf

Joseph's grandfather transforms his blanket many times over the years, but what can be done when the final item is lost? Gilman's version of this Yiddish folk tale won the 1993 Ruth Schwartz Award. When Joseph was a baby, his grandfather made him a wonderful blanket. But as Joseph grows older, the blanket becomes tattered and worn. Throw it out! cries Joseph's mother. Luckily, Grandpa is an extraordinary tailor. He can fix anything! And so with a snip! snip! here, and a few stitches there, Grandpa transforms the treasured blanket into a jacket, a vest, a Sabbath tie, a handkerchief, and finally a beautiful button. But when the button is lost, even Grandpa can't help. After all, how can you make something from nothing? In a rich and loving portrait of shtetl life, Phoebe Gilman presents a traditional Jewish folktale about family love and ingenuity that will warm the hearts of readers young and old.

Do Something for Nothing by Joshua Coombes Pdf

Through the simple act of a haircut, readers are taken on a geographical and emotional journey into the lives of humans experiencing homelessness in different cities across the world. "In this uplifting book, Coombes deftly illustrates how reaching out and listening can break down barriers in an often indifferent world." --Booklist "Such a simple gesture boosts someone's mood, what they think of themselves--and what society thinks of them. And while the haircuts are of value, it is Coombes' interest, caring and friendship that are of greater value." --A Bookworm's World "Coombes is a hairdresser, and he believes that small acts of love can make a big impact." --Morgan Freeman, in The Story of Us "Joshua’s stories show the power that empathy and compassion have to turn a common, everyday act into something transformative. They are the revelations of connection." --Michael Sheen, actor and activist "A simple, big-hearted, and world-shaking idea." --Nick Cave, singer, songwriter "The most vulnerable among us deserve our empathy, compassion, and advocacy. In leading by example, Joshua Coombes is both thought-provoking and inspiring, making us each ask what more we might do to better see and care for our communities. Joshua's work has always struck a chord with me, and I’m certain this book will strike a chord in the hearts of readers everywhere." --Sophia Bush, actor and activist "Joshua Coombes takes a simple concept--giving free haircuts to homeless people--and turns it into an spiritual parable. Armed with clippers, scissors, dry shampoo, and unpretentious decency, Coombes introduces the reader to those he met living on the streets of America, Australia, India, France, Holland, and his native UK, and in a warm and witty voice transforms his characters from invisible to unforgettable just as he did with the haircuts." --Danny Goldberg, author of Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain "Cutting someone's hair is a deeply intimate act, and when done for free, it conveys a profound affirmation of personal value. Do Something for Nothing reclaims the revolutionary power of small acts of human compassion across the boundaries that too often divide us.” --Mark Andersen, coauthor of We Are the Clash: Reagan, Thatcher, and the Last Stand of a Band That Mattered "Joshua Coombes's work gives us what we so desperately need right now: hope, optimism, kind curiosity, and real human connection. This book will make you want to do something, just because you can." --Emma Gannon, author of The Multi-Hyphen Life When you're on the fringes of society, being noticed can mean everything. In 2015, while working at a London hair salon, Joshua Coombes took to the streets with his scissors to build relationships with people sleeping rough in the capital. This inspired him to begin posting transformative images on social media to amplify their voices. These stories resonated and thousands of people got involved in their own way. #DoSomethingForNothing was born--a movement that encourages people to connect their skills and time to those who need it. Via the simple act of a haircut, readers are taken on a geographical and emotional journey into the lives of humans experiencing homelessness in different cities across the world. Featuring never-before-seen photographs and all-new writing, Do Something for Nothing explores themes of love, acceptance, shame, and perseverance, while inviting us to see ourselves in one another and dissolve the negative stigmas surrounding homelessness. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to organizations dedicated to assisting unsheltered people.

Something for Nothing by Jackson Lears Pdf

Jackson Lears has won accolades for his skill in identifying the rich and unexpected layers of meaning beneath the familiar and mundane in our lives. Now, he challenges the conventional wisdom that the Protestant ethic of perseverance, industry, and disciplined achievement is what made America great. Turning to the deep, seldom acknowledged reverence for luck that runs through our entire history from colonial times to the early twenty-first century, Lears traces how luck, chance, and gambling have shaped and, at times, defined our national character.

Something for Nothing by Brian Tracy Pdf

America's greatness comes from people working hard to fulfill their dreams. But today that greatness is being undermined by people using the government to steal other people's dreams (and money). Rather than participate and innovate in the marketplace, generating goods and services that benefit society, people are increasingly vying for political advantage to live at the expense of others. Something for Nothing reveals the social and personal threats inherent in this emerging "grabbing match" culture, juxtaposing free-market virtues against government vices, explaining how the something-for-nothing mentality corrupts the political system, undermines corporate success, and stifles the individual's ability to prosper and contribute long-term to society. More than exposing the dangers, however, Tracy helps readers set a personal and culture-wide agenda for change.

Something For Nothing by Lory Smith Pdf

Set in 1971, in the remote reaches of British Columbia, this comedic first novel follows the adventures of the small, isolated town of Nothing, B.C., as it finally gets television. Not everyone in the mountain community is excited by the prospects of a television tower on the top of the mountain, least of all Sol Nothing, the town's curmudgeon and patriarch. But he can't hold back progress all by himself. Enter a television crew, led by the slick Robert Dupry, there to document the momentous transformation. Another newcomer to town arrives in the form of Susan Sawtensky, a clumsy, cultural anthropologist, with a heart of gold, there to study the affects of television on the town's inhabitants. Before you can say Jiffy Pop, the two camps are locked in a tug of war of ideas on the merits and mayhem of television. When the ancient, wizened Indian Chief Old Stick in the Mud, living high in the mountains, is finally consulted about his feelings concerning the advent of television, we know we've entered into a bizarre, perhaps even magical world. Something For Nothing is that rare romantic comedy that tickles the funny bone as it touches the heart. Television comes to Nothing, and Nothing will ever be the same again.

Something from Nothing by Kurt P. Wise,Sheila A. Richardson Pdf

Did a thoughtful creator speak the whole universe into existence? What is the age of the universe? Most Christian students today are familiar with Bible "stories" but don't have a clue how to combat the prevailing anti-Christian philosophies. Beginning with God and His Word as the standard, Something from Nothing demonstrates how the biblical witness teaches that the age of the universe is not as old as other theories contend. The authors stress the purpose of origins study as an approach to knowing God in a deeper way. Something from Nothing also demonstrates how all issues raised by evolutionists can be answered not only by the Bible but also by scientific data and research.

Why is There Something Rather Than Nothing? by Leszek Kolakowski Pdf

Can nature make us happy? How can we know anything? What is justice? Why is there evil in the world? What is the source of truth? Is it possible for God not to exist? Can we really believe what we see? There are questions that have intrigued the world’s great thinkers over the ages, which still touch a cord in all of us today. They are questions that can teach us about the way we live, work, relate to each other and see the world. Here, one of the world’s greatest living philosophers, Leszek Kolakowski, explores the essence of these ideas, introducing figures from Socrates to Thomas Aquinas, Descartes to Nietzsche and concentrating on one single important philosophical question from each of them. Whether reflecting on good and evil, truth and beauty, faith and the soul, or free will and consciousness, Kolakowski shows that these timeless ideas remain at the very core of our existence.

Why there is Something rather than Nothing by Bede Rundle Pdf

Why should there be anything at all? Why, in particular, should a material world exist? Bede Rundle advances clear, non-technical answers to these perplexing questions. If, as the theist maintains, God is a being who cannot but exist, his existence explains why there is something rather than nothing. However, this can also be explained on the basis of a weaker claim. Not that there is some particular being that has to be, but simply that there has to be something or other. Rundle proffers arguments for thinking that that is indeed how the question is to be put to rest. Traditionally, the existence of the physical universe is held to depend on God, but the theist faces a major difficulty in making clear how a being outside space and time, as God is customarily conceived to be, could stand in an intelligible relation to the world, whether as its creator or as the author of events within it. Rundle argues that a creator of physical reality is not required, since there is no alternative to its existence. There has to be something, and a physical universe is the only real possibility. He supports this claim by eliminating rival contenders; he dismisses the supernatural, and argues that, while other forms of being, notably the abstract and the mental, are not reducible to the physical, they presuppose its existence. The question whether ultimate explanations can ever be given is forever in the background, and the book concludes with an investigation of this issue and of the possibility that the universe could have existed for an infinite time. Other topics discussed include causality, space, verifiability, essence, existence, necessity, spirit, fine tuning, and laws of Nature. Why There Is Something Rather Than Nothing offers an explanation of fundamental facts of existence in purely philosophical terms, without appeal either to theology or cosmology. It will provoke and intrigue anyone who wonders about these questions.
