With their unforgettable melodies, timeless messages, and stylistic indebtedness to both jazz and Broadway, American popular standards have proven to be among the most widely performed and enjoyed songs of the past century. Shaped in many ways by the technological and cultural developments of the early twentieth century, they have also managed to transcend these origins and become an enduring part of the American musical landscape. Ann van der Merwe explores how and why American songbook standards developed in the early twentieth century and how these standards have shaped American—and even global—musical culture ever since. The American Songbook explores key aspects of individual songs, including the musical and lyrical reasons for their broad appeal and applicability over the years. The American songbook continues to permeate the fabric of our daily lives. It is a repertoire that spans generations, from Fred Astaire to Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. As a result, music lovers both young and old will enjoy discovering how these beloved songs emerged and why they remain relevant a century later.
An anthology of favorite songs with seventy-nine musical selections, including fun camp songs, uplifting hymns, children's melodies, patriotic anthems, folk songs, and Christmas and other holiday tunes.

Cold War Fighter Pilots Songbook by Fortuna Call Sign: Pdf
The compilation of the book contains not all the songs Fighter Pilots sung during the Cold War era, but quiet a lot. The sources were exclusively my collection of unpublished Squadron Songbooks throughout the english speaking Fighter Pilots Community. They reflect the sheer emotions, the black humors of ill fated conflicts and the absence of women during their deployments. At the time the compilation is published, most of the songs are already banned from the Squadrons and O-Clubs and within short time they will be forgotten as a Social Squadron Part of a special Breed of Aviators during the 60s trough 90s. Some songs contain words, which were used only at the bar after some beer.
Where Are the Poor? by Philip D. Wingeier-Rayo Pdf
The Ecclesial Base Communities (CEBs) emerged in the wake of Latin American liberation theology and are often referred to as "the Church of the Poor." This book, however, addresses whether or not CEBs are indeed the Church of the Poor today. It is an open question now if Pentecostalism has in fact become the new church of the poor. To answer this question Philip Wingeier-Rayo conducted a one-year ethnographic study of both movements in a marginalized barrio in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Using the anthropological method of participant-observer, the author studied a Roman Catholic Church and a Pentecostal Church--just 100 yards apart--compiling surveys, life interviews, and field notes to relay his findings. For those interested in liberation theology, Pentecostalism, new religious movements, or the influence of religion on society, this in-depth ethnographic study will be of great interest.
