The poems in ""Songs of The Glens of Antrim"" by Moir O'Neill, were, in her own words, written 'by a Glens woman in the dialect of the Glens, and chiefly for the pleasure of other Glens-people'. They conjure up a world now gone and also places that have remained, and are now enriched by the memories of by-gone people and times.

Songs of the Glens of Antrim (Classic Reprint) by Moira O'Neill Pdf

Excerpt from Songs of the Glens of Antrim The Song of Glen Dun Sure this is blessed Erin an' this the same glen, The gold is on the whin-bush, the wather signs again, The Fairy Thorn's in flower, - an' what ails my heart then? Flower o' the Mat, Flower o' the May, What about the May time, an' he far away! Summer loves the green glen, the white bird loves the sea, An' the wind must kiss the heather top, an' the red bell hides a bee; As the bee is dear to the honey-flower, so one is dear to me. Flower o' the rose, Flower o' the rose, A thorn pricked me one day, but nobody knows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Charles Villiers Stanford by Paul Rodmell Pdf

The first book devoted to the composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) since 1935, this survey provides the fullest account of his life and the most detailed appraisal of his music to date. Renowned in his own lifetime for the rapid rate at which he produced new works, Stanford was also an important conductor and teacher. Paul Rodmell assesses these different roles and considers what Stanford's legacy to British music has been. Born and brought up in Dublin, Stanford studied at Cambridge and was later appointed Professor of Music there. His Irish lineage remained significant to him throughout his life, and this little-studied aspect of his character is examined here in detail for the first time. A man about whom no-one who met him could feel indifferent, Stanford made friends and enemies in equal numbers. Rodmell charts these relationships with people and institutions such as Richter, Parry and the Royal College of Music, and discusses how they influenced Stanford's career. Perhaps not the most popular of teachers, Stanford nevertheless coached a generation of composers who were to revitalize British music, amongst them Coleridge-Taylor, Ireland, Vaughan-Williams, Holst, Bridge and Howells. While their musical styles may not be obviously indebted to Stanford's, it is clear that, without him, British music of the first half of the twentieth century might have taken a very different course.

Highways and Byways in Donegal and Antrim by Stephen Gwynn Pdf

If you take this book with you as you travel around Donegal and the Glens of Antrim you will find that you journey not only over land, but also over time. More than just about anywhere else, the landscapes of Ireland evoke the past. Viewing Donegal and the Antrim Glens through the lens of history enhances and gives resonance to every valley, mountain and ancient building. Stephen Gwynn, who spent his childhood in Donegal and later became a prominent member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, travelled these counties on a bicycle, enabling him to take a close-up view of the townlands, rivers, lakes and historic sites he visited. His loving interest in the history of these places brings his accounts to life, revealing as they do, the hidden stories and associations behind the evocative exterior of the land.
