The Soul and Body of an Army by Ian Hamilton Pdf

Excerpt from The Soul and Body of an Army The Romans knew what they wanted when they set about making an Army. The very name they gave to the weapon to be handed to a Consul or pro-Consul embodied a clear-cut idea. "So sensible were the Romans of the imperfections of valour without skill and practice that, in their language, the name of an Army was borrowed from the word which signified exercise." Exercitus was the Roman notion of an Army - a body trainod to do in peace what they would have to do in war. Not with them a nation determined to win as a result of sheer, straightforward work, but a confederacy trusting to art, to generalship, to inspiration, expecting victory to crown the more brilliantly led. The quick-witted Greeks relied upon that reflection cast by Divinity upon the sensitive soul, that flash of light we call Genius; the matter-of-fact Romans upon putting their backs into the business. Or, to put it more technically, the Greek spirit led its leaders to study strategy, the art of manoeuvring into some position from which the greatest possible results would follow upon victory; whereas, the Romans aimed at the victory itself and concentrated rather upon tactics. The Soul of the Soldier by Thomas Tiplady Pdf

The sketches in this book and in my previous one, "The Cross at the Front," are attempts to show the soul of the soldier serving in France as I have seen it during the year and a half that I have been with him. It is a padre's privilege and duty to be the voice with which, in public worship, the soldiers speak to God; and through which their last thoughts are borne to their friends at home. He is their voice both when they are sick or wounded, and when they lie silent in the grave. He speaks of their hopes and fears, hardships and heroisms, laughter and tears. As best he may he tries to tell, to those who have a right and a longing to know, how they thought, and how they bore themselves in the great day of trial when all risked their lives and many laid them down. Soldiers, as a rule, are either inarticulate or do not care to speak of themselves; and the padre has to be their spokesman if ever their deeper thoughts and finer actions are to be known to their friends. To do this he may have to bring himself into the picture, or even illustrate a common thing in their lives by a personal experience of his own. To reveal life and thought at the Front in the third person, and without sacrificing truth and vividness, requires a degree of literary power and art which cannot be expected of a padre to whom writing is but a by-product, and not his main work. I have written but little of military operations--these things are not in my province. Moreover, they are not the things which are most revealing. The presence of Spring is first and most surely revealed by the flowers in our gardens and lanes; and the soldier is most clearly seen in the little things that happen on the march--in his billet or in the Dressing Station. Some things are not seen at all. They are only felt, and my opinion about them must be taken for what it is worth. One knows what the men are by their influence on one's own mind and life. I do not judge the morality and spirituality of our soldiers entirely by their habits and speech, for these are but outward and clumsy expressions of the inner life and are largely conventional. There is something else to put in the reckoning, and to find out what the soldiers are worth to us we must somehow get behind their words and actions and find out what they are worth to God, whose terrible wheel of war is shaping their characters. I appraise them mostly by the total effect of the impact of their souls on mine. I know their thoughts and feelings by the thoughts and feelings they inspire in me. "Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles?" There are certain thoughts and emotions that only come to me strongly when I am with the soldiers or when I am living again with them in memory, and so, I take these as their gift to me and judge the men by their influence on my character. Character is, in its influence, subtle as Spring. Words and actions by themselves are too coarse and conventional to do anything but mislead us in judging the quality of our men. "By their fruits ye shall know them." Not by their leaves. Fruit is seed. In the seed the tree reproduces itself. And reproduction, whether in physical, moral or spiritual life, is the test of vitality. To be continue in this ebook...

Spirit, Soul, and Body Ⅱ by Dr. Jaerock Lee Pdf

Volume 2 of Spirit, Soul, and Body in particular will explain about the origin of the Creator God, the vast spiritual space, and the space of light where our spirit will dwell. There are some full-color pictures to help you better understand the form of God and space. Once we understand the secrets of the spaces and become a person of whole spirit, we can go beyond the human limitations to use the space of God, and we can even see the form of God. That is why Jesus said in John 14:12, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.”

Body-Soul-Spirit by Joel T. Klein Pdf

Body-Soul-Spirit explores the relationship between these components of life, their interaction, independence and interdependence. These are the most important queries which have occupied the human mind throughout the history of the species. The renewed interest in the relationship of the soul, body and spirit in our contemporary life suggests a widening trend to view the three as an inseparable unit. The resulting findings are the foundation of holistic therapeutic practice, which treats the human being as a whole. The author believes this material is timely and relevant to present-day medical thinking, teaching and healing processes. The Body-Soul-Brain-Mind-Spirit interaction is a frequent topic for the popular and secular press, magazines, newspapers, lecturers, healers and the religious faithful. Major medical schools have introduced courses on spirituality and holistic practices. The general public in ever-growing numbers seeks alternate approaches to health outside of medical and pharmaceutical interventions. In an unprecedented unique way, the author explores the relationship between body, soul, mind, spirit and intellect in mythology, philosophy, science and practice through a collection of dialogues, in poetry and prose. His analysis concludes that all these elements of humans perform as a unified, integrated system.

Body or the Soul? by Frank A. Abbott Pdf

In the two centuries before the Quiet Revolution, the people of Quebec exercised a higher degree of independence from the Catholic Church than is often presumed. Investigating rural Quebec from the mid-eighteenth century to the turn of the twentieth, Frank Abbott argues convincingly that the obligations and priorities of the Church did not unswervingly rule the lives of its parishioners. The Body or the Soul? is a history of religious and cultural life in the parish of St-Joseph-de-Beauce. Drawing from their pastors' detailed annual reports to the archbishops of Quebec, St-Joseph’s parish registers, contemporary accounts, government censuses, and the largely unexplored oral testimony on rural life and culture found in the Archives de folklore et ethnologie at Université Laval, Abbott assesses the nature and degree of influence and control that the church exerted over the everyday lives of a rural Quebec community. He examines the telling details found in church building projects, the relationships between clergy and parishioners, attendance at Sunday mass and catechism classes, reception of communion, the persistence of what the Church termed “superstition,” traditional customs of sociability, and the degree of control that the Church exerted over the community’s social and sexual behaviour. Rich with primary sources, The Body or the Soul? reveals the tensions between Catholicism’s place in people’s lives and the independent spirit of a vigorous popular culture.

A Message for the Soul of Man by John D. Powers Pdf

One of the most unanswered questions in the world today is why. Why did God create this universe and everything in it? Why did God create the angels and every soul? Why does God want each soul to join him in heaven? In A Message for the Soul of Man, author John D. Powers answers these and other questions relating to our souls, our creation, and our life's purpose. After receiving a message from God many years ago, Powers researched Bible scripture to validate this important communication. Now, Powers shares the full message he received and the implications it carries for the souls of mankind: God wants a personal relationship with us, and he wants every soul to be saved. Through thought-provoking discussion and testimony, A Message for the Soul of Man refreshes our knowledge about God, ourselves, and the world; it helps assess where we are in relation to the world and its development. Powers describes how we are called to examine ourselves, learn about our soul, and discover our purpose in life. We have the power and the choice to determine what will happen to our immortal soul after death. This title received a Finalist Award in the 2011 International Book Awards.

Self, Soul and Body in Religious Experience by Albert I. Baumgartner Pdf

The papers in this volume were delivered at the first international colloquium by the Jacob Taubes Minerva Center for Religious Anthropology at Bar Ilan University, held in February 1995. Concepts of Self, Soul and Body are so close to the physiological layers of life that we may imagine them to be biological as well; but in fact, they are social constructs, and a source of fundamental metaphors for the classification of experience. They thus help organize the world, at the same time as they express basic human identity. They vary from culture to culture and can productively be compared and contrasted from one setting to another. We intend these papers to be a test case of the benefit to be gained from attention to Religious Anthropology.
