Sites of Contestation by Julia Rensing,Lorena Rizzo,Wanda Rutishauser Pdf

This book is a collection of essays written by emerging scholars at the University of Basel on the basis of their subjective encounters with a specific archival collection housed in the Basler Afrika Bibliographien in Basel. The Ernst and Ruth Dammann collection consists of around 8100 images, 750 audio recordings and numerous manuscripts, diaries and notes. The German couple conducted research on Namibian oral literatures and languages as they were spoken and performed across the country in the early 1950s. Based on in-depth engagement with the textual, visual and audio records assembled in this intricate collection, the authors of this book critically interrogated the implications of opening a colonial archive, exploring alternative ways of reading and understanding the historical material. As unique examples of close reading and listening, the essays propose creative ways of attending to the politics of race, gender, famine, ethnography, biography and fiction in colonial knowledge production.

Civil Procedure in Focus by W. Jeremy Counseller,Eric Porterfield Pdf

Civil Procedure in Focus by Jeremy Counseller and Eric Porterfield uses a combination of accessible explanatory text, cases, and other primary legal sources to teach civil procedure, and then provides opportunities for students to apply the law to multiple sets of facts in every chapter. Selected cases illustrate key changes in the law and show how courts have developed and apply doctrine. The unintimidating approach of this casebook provides a hands-on, experiential learning environment that can be essential to many students’ success. Through practice-based exercises, students learn to apply legal principles and concepts to real-world scenarios. Simply knowing the facts of a benchmark case is not enough; knowing how to apply the doctrine from one case to a different set of facts enhances a` student’s ability to succeed in and after law school. New to the Second Edition: Multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter Discussion of “Snap Removal,” a hot topic currently percolating through the federal court system Updates regarding recent US Supreme Court cases regarding personal jurisdiction Professors and students will benefit from: Applying the Concepts and Civil Procedure in Practice exercises. These end-of-chapter exercises encourage students to synthesize the chapter material and apply relevant legal doctrine and code to real-world scenarios. Students can use these exercises for self-assessment or the professor can use them to promote class interaction. Real Life Applications. Every case in a chapter is followed by Real Life Applications, which present a series of questions based on a scenario similar to the facts in the case. Real Life Applications challenge students to apply what they have learned and help prepare them for real-world practice. Professors can use Real Life Applications to spark class discussions or provide them as individual short-answer assignments. Case Previews and Post-Case Follow-Ups. To succeed, law students must know how to deconstruct and analyze cases. Case Previews highlight the legal concepts in a case before the student reads it. Post-Case Follow-Ups summarize the important points and go one step further—noting the significance of a case to current law as well as its later ramifications. Clear exposition of key concepts in the text that means professors can spend less class time lecturing students on the basics and more time discussing different perspectives on the law, current issues, etc. Essay, short-answer, and multiple-choice questions in every chapter Practice-based hypotheticals that challenge students to apply doctrine to different fact scenarios Exhibits that highlight the relevant rule of law and corresponding legal authority

Adolescent Literacy and Writing by Courtney Brown Pdf

Writing is a powerful communication tool. It affords the opportunity for creative expression and the analysis of comprehensive thought. This monograph describes the authentic writing experiences of three African American adolescent members of an after-school writing club situated in a boarding school. Without the constraints imposed by deadlines, rubrics, grading, teacher feedback, or test-centered, argumentative compositions, members of the club participated in eleven writing sessions where they co-constructed meaningful dialogue, wrote original manuscripts, and developed a supportive social community. The sociocultural context of these adolescents’ experiences with writing presents themes of choice, collaboration, creativity, and catharsis told in a series of dynamic narratives.

China's Sustainable Use of Natural Resources by China Development Research Foundation Pdf

This book examines China’s resource endowment and the country’s current exploitation and use of resources and analyzes the main challenges and potential opportunities facing the country. It then discusses how to improve the efficiency with which resources are used by taking a ‘full-life-cycle’ approach to resource use. After summing up the evolution of China’s policies and systems relating to resources and the environment, this book goes on to study how China’s participation in global resource allocation and global resource governance has progressed under its open-economy situation, as well as challenges facing that participation. Based on all these analysis, the report proposes two targets for managing the total quantities of two specific metrics. That is, it recommends aiming to reach peak consumption of resources and peak emission of pollutants by 2030. In addition, it makes a number of specific policy recommendations. The China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) is a public foundation initiated by the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC). Its mission is to advance good governance and public policy to promote economic development and social progress. The Foundation has approached its mandate in a number of ways, including support for evidence-based policy research, leadership training, high-level forums and symposiums to promote economic cooperation and development, and the promotion of responsible public policy. As China continues to move steadily ahead with policy reforms and investments for more inclusive development, the demands for research, transparent and accountable processes, and citizenship engagement are expanding. The Foundation is striving to meet these challenges and to coordinate policy research work which supports the work of government, civil society and enterprises in furthering equitable development in China.

African Economic Development by Christopher Cramer,John Sender,Arkebe Oqubay Pdf

"This book challenges conventional wisdoms about economic performance and possible policies for economic development in African countries. Its starting point is the striking variation in African economic performance. Unevenness and inequalities form a central fact of African economic experiences. The authors highlight not only differences between countries, but also variations within countries, differences often organized around distinctions of gender, class, and ethnic identity. For example, neo-natal mortality and school dropout have been reduced, particularly for some classes of women in some areas of Africa. Horticultural and agribusiness exports have grown far more rapidly in some countries than in others. These variations (and many others) point to opportunities for changing performance, reducing inequalities, learning from other policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure, and the legacies of a colonial past. The book rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, but it does pay close attention to the results of policy in more industrialized parts of the world. Seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are - fundamental and enduring - may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development can be expected to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be were certain impediments suddenly removed. The authors criticize a wide range of orthodox and heterodox economists, especially for their cavalier attitude to evidence. Drawing on their own decades of research and policy experience, they combine careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with political economy insights (mainly derived from Kalecki, Kaldor and Hischman) to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment"--

All Students Can Succeed by Jean Stockard,Timothy W. Wood,Cristy Coughlin,Caitlin Rasplica Khoury Pdf

Based on more than ten years of research, All Students Can Succeed presents a comprehensive review of research related to Direct Instruction (DI), a highly structured method of teaching based on the assumption that all students can learn if given appropriate instruction. The authors identify over 500 research reports published over the last 50 years and encompassing almost 4,000 effect sizes, no doubt the largest meta-analysis of any single method of instruction ever published. Extensive statistical analyses show that estimates of DI’s effectiveness are consistent over time, with different research approaches, across different school environments, students from all types of backgrounds, different comparative programs, and both academic achievement and non-academic outcomes including student self-confidence. Effects are substantially stronger than those reported for other curricula. When students have DI for more time and when teachers implement the programs as designed, the effects are even stronger. Results indicate that DI has the potential to dramatically change patterns of student achievement in the United States. In an even-handed style accessible to policy makers, educators, and parents, the authors describe the theory underlying DI, its development, use, and history; systematically examine criticisms; and discuss policy implications. Extensive appendices provide detailed information for researchers.

Statistical Process Monitoring Using Advanced Data-Driven and Deep Learning Approaches tackles multivariate challenges in process monitoring by merging the advantages of univariate and traditional multivariate techniques to enhance their performance and widen their practical applicability. The book proceeds with merging the desirable properties of shallow learning approaches – such as a one-class support vector machine and k-nearest neighbours and unsupervised deep learning approaches – to develop more sophisticated and efficient monitoring techniques. Finally, the developed approaches are applied to monitor many processes, such as waste-water treatment plants, detection of obstacles in driving environments for autonomous robots and vehicles, robot swarm, chemical processes (continuous stirred tank reactor, plug flow rector, and distillation columns), ozone pollution, road traffic congestion, and solar photovoltaic systems. Uses a data-driven based approach to fault detection and attribution Provides an in-depth understanding of fault detection and attribution in complex and multivariate systems Familiarises you with the most suitable data-driven based techniques including multivariate statistical techniques and deep learning-based methods Includes case studies and comparison of different methods

Grandparents/Grandchildren by Arthur Kornhaber,Kenneth L. Woodward Pdf

In this book Kornhaber and Woodward explore the vital connections which link generations to each other and expose a new social contract that destroys the emotional bonds between grandparents and grandchildren., This is the first book which reviews, in a careful ethnographic manner, the relationship of grandchildren to grandparents and the place of love at one end and abandonment at the other by grandparents. The authors probe the deep, unexplored emotional histories of hundreds of grandparents; how they feel about themselves, their grandchildren, and their loss of function within today's nuclear family., With sharp increases in the number of broken families and working mothers, grandparents are more vital than ever and also more available than ever. This basic research document shows how grandparents recover their natural role as elders of the family and of society. The author's basic premise is that to exist is to be connected, and that no matter how grandparents act, they affect the emotional well-being of their grandchildren, for better or for worse, simply because they exist., In an age when mounting economic and social pressures make it increasingly easier to split a family than to sustain one, the authors alert us to a forgotten source of family strength, the power of grandparents to enrich the lives as a whole. The case studies reported in this volume represent a first effort in an area left unexplored by developmental researchers. There are lessons here for social scientists, but even more for our alienated society.—Urie Bronfenbrenner, Cornell University
