South Jersey Towns by William McMahon Pdf

No region in the nation has a richer heritage than the eight counties of South Jersey--Cape May, Salem, Cumberland, Atlantic, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Ocean. In this book William McMahon has collected an assortment of little-known information and historical anecdotes about the people and places of this area. "Mr. McMahon offers a chronicle that is full of storms and fires, shipbuilding and shipwrecks, privateers and pirates, taverns and publick houses, Indians and Liberty Boys, boom towns and ghost towns, moonshining and medicine shows, stagecoach lines and railroads, spies and betrayals, and--botanically--cranberries, eelgrass, and poison love apples (tomatoes)."--New York Times Book Review

Forgotten Towns of Southern New Jersey by Henry Charlton Beck Pdf

Composed, for the most part, from sketches that were published in the Courier-Post newspapers of Camden, New Jersey, Beck provides us with a series of stories of towns too tiny or uncertain for today's maps. Together, these sketches help to create a more complete picture of the history of New Jersey. A connecting skein of untold or little known wartime history--the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the conflict of North against South--runs through most of the sketches. Many of the sketches concern the pine towns and their people, "the pineys" who lived in the Jersey pine barrens.

Haunted New Jersey by Patricia A. Martinelli,Charles A. Stansfield Jr. Pdf

Phantom pirates, water monsters, and mythical snakes figure prominently in this collection of eerie tales from the Garden State. From this state’s bucolic, rolling farmland to its heavily populated shore come a variety of stories and legends, including a murderer whose body parts were used for medical (and other) experiments, the “White Pilgrim” who died of the disease he believed he could never get, and an Indian chief who used a swastika to protect a group of defenseless schoolgirls.

Handbook of the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States by William A. Kretzschmar,William A. Kretzschmar Jr. Pdf

Who uses "skeeter hawk," "snake doctor," and "dragonfly" to refer to the same insect? Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.

Cape May County, New Jersey by Jeffery M. Dorwart Pdf

New settlements appeared in the pine wilderness of the mainland and on the uninhabited Atlantic Ocean barrier islands. These changes caused social and political conflicts, and new development assaulted the fragile seashore environment. Fishing and shipbuilding were key industries throughout the early history of Cape May County. In addition, familiar industries such as cranberry harvesting and nearly forgotten endeavors such as goldbeating, sugar refining, and cedar shingle mining played vital roles in the county's economic development. Dorwart also traces the origins of the seashore resort industry through the history of the city of Cape May, with its unique architectural styles and heritage, as well as the founding of Wildwood, Ocean City, and the newer resort towns.

Our Town by David L. Kirp,John P. Dwyer,Larry A. Rosenthal Pdf

"This book is both an inspiring account of public interest law at its best and a sobering assessment of how 'the soul of suburbia' continues to resist social justice. . . . an unexpectedly moving account of hope, idealism, and intelligence." --The New York Times Book Review "A well-written, exhaustively researched account of the legal battle to open New Jersey's suburbs to the poor . . . The authors actually took the time to talk to the lawyers and litigants on both sides of the controversy. Their chronicle of the legal developments is informed, and much improved, by the flesh-and-blood stories of those who actually lived the case. . . . a cautionary and inspiring tale." --The Philadelphia Inquirer "The authors of Our Town in particular enable readers to see historical continuity in legal and popular discussions of race, realism, and housing patterns in American society. Our Town also explores the challenges to public policy raised by the existence of residential segregation patterns." --The Nation " This book] is valuable both as a case study of judicial activism and its consequences and as a detailed anaylsis of suburban attitudes regarding race, class, and property." --Urban Affairs Review

A Geography of New Jersey by Charles A. Stansfield Pdf

"The book is chock full of nuggets of information on all aspects of New Jersey from the beginning of the colonial period to the mid-1990s."-Harbans Singh, Montclair State University "This is an up-to-date, comprehensive and well-written text that will appeal to both the student and the general reader. I shall make it required reading for my course on the geography of the state."-Peter O. Wacker, professor of geography, Rutgers University "More than an ecological primer, this book provides essential social and economic information. Over one hundred figures and forty-five tables capture details to support the straightforward prose, and an annotated bibliography leads the reader on."-New Jersey Monthly "While the second edition is similar to the first, only with more up-to-date statistics, improved maps and figures, and organization, the material covered is factually interesting. Following an introduction . . . there are several chapters on the physical geography. . . . These are followed by interesting chapters on managing physical environments, human ecology and early European settlements, including excellent sections on historical geography. . . . The number and informational content of the maps is far superior in the second edition. The book is of value for use in either a high school or university regional geography class. Stansfield must be commended for his writing style that holds the interest and for his knowledgeable selection of materials to be included."-The Pennsylvania Geographer New Jersey is "the city in the garden." It is a bundle of paradoxes-a highly industrialized state famous for its seashore and mountain resorts; fairly conservative politically, it nonetheless pioneered state land use, zoning, and environmental protection legislation. The only state to be characterized by the U.S. Census as entirely metropolitan, New Jersey has the highest population density in the nation. It is a highly suburbanized state that remains important agriculturally-both very large and very small farms continue to multiply. New Jersey is also a state where widespread suburbanization of residents, shopping, and jobs has affected the most remote corners. At the same time, massive immigration is revitalizing urban centers and dramatically changing the demographics of the state. New Jersey represents both a microcosm of the United States and a leading indicator of future trends in the nation. This updated edition of this classic text features nearly 100 maps and illustrations. Charles A. Stansfield Jr. instructs readers on all aspects of New Jersey geography and provides a detailed analysis of the state's topography, management of physical environments, human ecology, early European settlement, cultural landscapes, population characteristics, race and ethnicity, transportation, agriculture, industrial development, recreation and tourism, and regions. Charles A. Stansfield Jr. is a professor of geography at Rowan University, Glassboro, New Jersey.
