Souvenirs from the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by Richard and Susan Wales Pdf

A flavour of this book ... This small disk is called Carmichael’s Amulet and it commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by the dates 1837 and 1897. These are the dates of her 60 years reign. To the right can be seen a mould that is carved from wood. It seems to have been professionally made in a large block that is well finished and furnished with a hook for hanging up. The mould may have produced butter pats or terrines for a Victorian celebration. As well as the Diamond Jubilee dates it commemorates the Record Reign that Queen Victoria had achieved in 1896 after being monarch for longer than George III. These images were taken by the authors as this book was being written and so they do not appear in the text which summarises an enormous variety of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs. Inside you will find a unique view of Victoriana that was made to celebrate one event at the height of the powers of the British Empire. The souvenirs will give you a glimpse into Victorian creative ingenuity as well as the thinking and beliefs of people in 1897.

Mediation, Remediation, and the Dynamics of Cultural Memory by Astrid Erll,Ann Rigney Pdf

The specific concern of this collection is linking the use of media to the larger socio-cultural processes involved in collective memory-making. The focus rests in particular on two aspects of media use: the basic dynamics of mediation and remediation. The key questions are: What role do media play in the production and circulation of cultural memories? How do mediation, remediation and intermediality shape objects and acts of cultural remembrance? How can new, emergent media redefine or transform what is collectively remembered?

Mediation, Remediation, and the Dynamics of Cultural Memory by Astrid Erll,Ann Rigney Pdf

This collection of essays brings together two major new developments in cultural memory studies: firstly, the shift away from static models of cultural memory, where the emphasis lies on cultural products, in the direction of more dynamic models where the emphasis lies instead on the cultural and social processes involved in the ongoing production of shared views of the past; and secondly, the growing interest in the role of the media, and their role beyond that of mere storage, within these dynamics. The specific concern of this collection is linking the use of media to the larger socio-cultural processes involved in collective memory-making. The focus rests in particular on two aspects of media use: the basic dynamics of “mediation” and “remediation”. The key questions are: What role do media play in the production and circulation of cultural memories? How do mediation, remediation and intermediality shape objects and acts of cultural remembrance? How can new, emergent media redefine or transform what is collectively remembered? The essays of this collection focus on social, historical, religious, and artistic media-memories. The authors analyze the memory-making impact of news media, the mediation and remediation of lieux de mémoire, the medial representation of colonial and postcolonial, of Holocaust and Second World War memories, and finally the problematization of these very processes in artistic media forms, such as novels and movies.

Twilight of Splendor by Greg King Pdf

Power, pageantry, and pride Queen Victoria ruled the most powerful empire the world has ever seen, covering one fourth of the earth's land surface, reigning over subjects on every continent, and exercising undisputed mastery of the oceans in between. She was the "Grandmother of Europe," with descendants occupying the thrones of half a dozen nations, and more to come. The very era in which she lived already bore her name. In June 1897, her proud and prosperous nation marked her sixtieth year on the throne of England with the most lavish display of pomp, circumstance, wealth, and affection in its history. Twilight of Splendor presents a breathtaking portrait of a sovereign and her empire at the height of their global power. Focusing on the spectacle of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it combines a thrilling account of that massive celebration with an intimate exploration of Victoria's world--her splendid palaces and possessions, the grand banquets and balls she hosted, her immense wealth, the politicians and courtiers who did her bidding, her confidence and assertiveness as a ruler, her surprising personal humility, and her perpetual state of mourning for her beloved husband, Prince Albert. Based on hundreds of published and unpublished sources from the period, including Queen Victoria's private correspondence and personal journals, Twilight of Splendor is must reading for Anglophiles, Victorian-history buffs, and anyone interested in the golden age of monarchy. * The first book to portray the queen and her court in the last years of her reign * Contrasts the queen's private and public images in her efforts to solidify the monarchy * Exposes the queen's difficult relations with her children * Explores the queen's relationship with her extended European royal relatives * Draws together for the first time hundreds of disparate sources * Includes a number of rare photographs complementing the text

Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria by Barlow Cumberland Pdf

Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria by Barlow Cumberland is a record of the celebration in England's New Zealand, Australian, and South African colonies to commemorate Queen Victoria's new reign. Excerpt: "Parade Service of H. M. Forces, Societies and Citizens at Beacon Hill. The Services of the day will commence in the Colonies of New Zealand and Australia, where Services have been arranged, afterward in South Africa, and so will follow the sun westward. Upon the sun crossing the ocean and reaching the continent of America, the brethren in St. Johns, Newfoundland, will re-commence the anthem, which will then be taken up in succession, across the continent through Canada, as the precise time reaches each, from the Atlantic to the Pacific."

Victoria, Queen of the Screen by Leigh Ehlers Telotte Pdf

Both in life and death, Queen Victoria is among the most popular monarchs to be committed to film. Her reign was characterized by an explosion in media coverage that began to rely on images rather than words to tell her story. Even though Victoria has been labeled the "first media monarch," the sheer magnitude of her screen presence has been neither chronicled nor fully appreciated until now. This book examines the growth and evolution of Queen Victoria's on-screen image. From the satirical cartoons and silent films of the 19th century to the television shows, video games, and webcomics of the 21st, it demonstrates how the protean Victoria character has evolved, ultimately meaning many different things to many different people in many different ways. Each chapter looks at a facet of her character and includes analysis of how these media present Queen Victoria as a real person and shape her as a character acting within a narrative. The book includes a comprehensive and international filmography.

Forgetful Remembrance by Guy Beiner Pdf

Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants — and in particular Presbyterians — repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of participation, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion.
