Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region by Thomas Dietz,David Bidwell Pdf
People living in the Great Lakes region are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Shifts in seasonal temperatures and precipitation patterns could have dramatic impacts on the economy, ecology, and quality of life. In this illuminating and thorough volume, leading scholars address the challenge of preparing for climate change in the region, where decision makers from various sectors—government, agriculture, recreation, and tourism—must increasingly be aware of the need to incorporate climate change into their short- and long-term planning. The chapters in this revealing book, written by some of the foremost climate change scholars in North America, outline the major trends in the climate of the Great Lakes region, how humans might cope with the uncertainty of climate change impacts, and examples of on-the-ground projects that have addressed these issues.

Nearshore Waters of the Great Lakes by Thomas A. Edsall Pdf
"In October 1994, the governments of the United States and Canada convened the first State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC '94). The conference was designed to further the purpose of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the United States and Canada, which aims to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the waters of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem. Background papers prepared for the conference and discussions that occurred at SOLEC '94 are summarized in a document prepared by the U.S. and Canadian governments titled "State of the Great Lakes 1995" (EC and EPA 1995). A second, follow-up conference (SOLEC '96) scheduled for fall 1996 is designed to focus more intensively on the status of the Great Lakes coastal ecosystem, which includes the coastal shorelands, coastal wetlands, and coastal or nearshore waters. A major objective of SOLEC '96 is to examine the effects of human activity--and particularly land use practices--on the coastal ecosystem. The present paper is designed to provide background information that will facilitate discussion of the status of the nearshore waters element of Great Lakes coastal ecosystems"--Introd., p. 5.

Seafloor Mapping along Continental Shelves by Charles W. Finkl,Christopher Makowski Pdf
This university-level reference work covers a range of remote sensing techniques that are useful for mapping and visualizing benthic environments on continental shelves. Chapters focus on overviews of the history and future of seafloor mapping techniques, cartographical visualisation and communication of seafloor mapping, and practical applications of new technologies. Seabed mapping is referenced by high-resolution seismic methods, sidescan sonar, multibeam bathymetry, satellite imagery, LiDAR, acoustic backscatter techniques, and soundscape ecology monitoring, use of autonomous underwater vehicles, among other methods. The wide breadth of subjects in this volume provides diversified coverage of seafloor imaging. This collection of modern seafloor mapping techniques summarizes the state of the art methods for mapping continental shelves.
