An Introduction to the Theory of Piezoelectricity by Jiashi Yang Pdf

This book is based on lecture notes for a graduate course that has been offered at University of Nebraska-Lincoln on and off since 1998. The course is intended to provide graduate students with the basic aspects of the continuum modeling of electroelastic interactions in solids. A concise treatment of linear, nonlinear, static and dynamic theories and problems is presented. The emphasis is on formulation and understanding of problems useful in device applications rather than solution techniques of mathematical problems. The mathematics used in the book is minimal. The book is suitable for a one-semester graduate course on electroelasticity. It can also be used as a reference for researchers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank UNL for a Maude Hammond Fling Faculty Research Fellowship in 2003 for the preparation of the first draft of this book. I also wish to thank Ms. Deborah Derrick of the College of Engineering and Technology at UNL for editing assistance with the book, and Professor David Y. Gao of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for recommending this book to Kluwer for publication in the series of Advances in Mechanics and Mathematics. JSY Lincoln, Nebraska 2004 Preface Electroelastic materials exhibit electromechanical coupling. They experience mechanical deformations when placed in an electric field, and become electrically polarized under mechanical loads. Strictly speaking, piezoelectricity refers to linear electromechanical couplings only.

Mechanics and Physics of Structured Media: Asymptotic and Integral Methods of Leonid Filshtinsky provides unique information on the macroscopic properties of various composite materials and the mathematical techniques key to understanding their physical behaviors. The book is centered around the arguably monumental work of Leonid Filshtinsky. His last works provide insight on fracture in electromagnetic-elastic systems alongside approaches for solving problems in mechanics of solid materials. Asymptotic methods, the method of complex potentials, wave mechanics, viscosity of suspensions, conductivity, vibration and buckling of functionally graded plates, and critical phenomena in various random systems are all covered at length. Other sections cover boundary value problems in fracture mechanics, two-phase model methods for heterogeneous nanomaterials, and the propagation of acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic waves in a one-dimensional periodic two-component material. Covers key issues around the mechanics of structured media, including modeling techniques, fracture mechanics in various composite materials, the fundamentals of integral equations, wave mechanics, and more Discusses boundary value problems of materials, techniques for predicting elasticity of composites, and heterogeneous nanomaterials and their statistical description Includes insights on asymptotic methods, wave mechanics, the mechanics of piezo-materials, and more Applies homogenization concepts to various physical systems

Workshop Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments by J.A. Botía,D. Charitos Pdf

Intelligent Environments (IE) play an increasingly important role in many areas of our lives, including education, healthcare and the domestic environment. The term refers to physical spaces incorporating pervasive computing technology used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment or both. This book presents the proceedings of the workshops of the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE ‘13), held in Athens, Greece, in July 2013. The workshops which were presented in the context of this conference range from regular lectures to practical sessions. They provide a forum for scientists, researchers and engineers from both industry and academia to engage in discussions on newly emerging or rapidly evolving topics in the field. Topics covered in the workshops include artificial intelligence techniques for ambient intelligence; applications of affective computing in intelligent environments; smart offices and other workplaces; intelligent environment technology in education for creative learning; museums as intelligent environments; the application of intelligent environment technologies in the urban context for creating more sociable, intelligent cities and for constructing urban intelligence. IE can enrich user experience, better manage the environment’s resources, and increase user awareness of that environment. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the application of intelligent environments.

Computational Homogenization of Heterogeneous Materials with Finite Elements by Julien Yvonnet Pdf

This monograph provides a concise overview of the main theoretical and numerical tools to solve homogenization problems in solids with finite elements. Starting from simple cases (linear thermal case) the problems are progressively complexified to finish with nonlinear problems. The book is not an overview of current research in that field, but a course book, and summarizes established knowledge in this area such that students or researchers who would like to start working on this subject will acquire the basics without any preliminary knowledge about homogenization. More specifically, the book is written with the objective of practical implementation of the methodologies in simple programs such as Matlab. The presentation is kept at a level where no deep mathematics are required.

In the second part, the authors address techniques and applications of optimization and control in a variety of disciplines, such as chaos synchronization, facial expression recognition and dynamic input-output economic models. Other applications considered here include image retrieval, natural earth satellites orbital transfers, snap-back repellers and modern logistic systems. Readers will learn of advances in optimization, control and operations research, as well as potential new avenues of research and development. The book will appeal to scientific researchers, mathematicians and all specialists interested in the latest advances in optimization and control.

Mathematical Models in Contact Mechanics by Mircea Sofonea,Andaluzia Matei Pdf

This text provides a complete introduction to the theory of variational inequalities with emphasis on contact mechanics. It covers existence, uniqueness and convergence results for variational inequalities, including the modelling and variational analysis of specific frictional contact problems with elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic materials. New models of contact are presented, including contact of piezoelectric materials. Particular attention is paid to the study of history-dependent quasivariational inequalities and to their applications in the study of contact problems with unilateral constraints. The book fully illustrates the cross-fertilisation between modelling and applications on the one hand and nonlinear mathematical analysis on the other. Indeed, the reader will gain an understanding of how new and nonstandard models in contact mechanics lead to new types of variational inequalities and, conversely, how abstract results concerning variational inequalities can be applied to prove the unique solvability of the corresponding contact problems.
