Spectroscopy (Classic Reprint) by E. C. C. Baly Pdf

Excerpt from Spectroscopy IN the following pages I have endeavoured to present the subject of Spectroscopy from the practical side. As full details as possible have been given of the methods of working with the various types of instruments. In the many branches of Applied Spectroscopy, as distinct from the statistical work, it has been quite impossible to deal with the great number of researches of the present time. Typical investigations have, therefore, been selected, both with the view of indicating the lines upon which present work is being carried on, and, further, in the hope, which I trust is not a vain one, that more workers may be encouraged to enter this fascinating and prolific field of research. Ihave given no set tables of wave-lengths, because these tables are published in a most convenient form by Dr. Marshall Watts, and their inclusion would have necessitated the sacrifice of a considerable amount of the text. The Spectroscope by Richard A. Proctor Pdf

Excerpt from The Spectroscope: And Its Work Spectroscopic Analysis clear and simple for beginners, but at the same time accurate, and as complete as pos sible within so limited a space - following, in this respect, the plan already adopted in my elementary treatises on Astronomy and Physical Geography. In order to make room for subjects properly belonging to Spectroscopy, several subjects which are very fully treated of in large works on the Spectroscope (and indeed in one not containing more letterpress than the present) have been dealt with very briefly. It seems to me that - to mention but one such subject - full accounts of the various contrivances for obtaining in tense heat and light, such as that with which Schellen occupies the first fifty-two pages of his treatise on Spectrum Analysis, are unsuitable even for large works intended for the general student, and are altogether out of place in an elementary treatise, necessarily limited in size. I doubt, indeed, whether anything can be usefully said in textbooks respecting details of the con struction of instruments which the observer (who alone could profit by such explanations) must possess and employ. A few minutes devoted to the examination of the instrument itself will, in such a case, be of more use than many hours' study of textbook explanations. On the other hand, I have endeavoured to give a full account of all the principles on which the application of Spectroscopy depends, as also of all the chief methods of observation and then results. I am greatly indebted to Mr. J. Browning, the emi nent Optician, for the use of many cuts illustrating various forms of Spectroscopes, and their adjuncts. The Spectroscopy of the Extreme Ultra-Violet (Classic Reprint) by Theodore Lyman Pdf

Excerpt from The Spectroscopy of the Extreme Ultra-Violet It is to this region that the greater part of this work is dedicated. In looking back over the foregoing paragraphs, it is at once obvious that the factors which have controlled our knowledge of the ultra-violet end of the spectrum are, first, the absorption of solids; second, the means by which the refracted light was detected; third, the character of the source, and fourth, the absorption of the constituents of the air. By way of intro duction to the Schumann region, therefore, it will be well to pay special attention to the behaviour of these agents in the ultra-violet. The classic works on spectroscopy require at the outset a detailed account of apparatus, but in the limited scope of the present volume it will be necessary to confine ourselves to those instruments which are not described elsewhere. Thus, as prism and grating spectroscopes are fully treated in many places as far as the ordinary ultra-violet is concerned notably in Kayser's Handbuch and Baly's Spectroscopy, it will not be necessary to mention them until the Schumann region is reached. On the other hand, since instruments for the comparison of the energy given by two sources of light in the ultra-violet are not quite so familiar to the scientific reader, and since the principles involved in them often permit their use in the extreme ultra-violet, we shall begin by some de scription of them. Two Lectures on the Development and Present, Position of Chemical Analysis, by Emission Spectra (Classic Reprint) by F. Twyman Pdf

Excerpt from Two Lectures on the Development and Present, Position of Chemical Analysis, by Emission Spectra The two lectures in this booklet are based on a lecture delivered before the Sheffield Metallurgical Association, in December, 1924. They are now printed for the use of teachers of Chemistry, etc., with free permis sion to utilise them in their curriculum. The publishers have already issued four booklets dealing with spectro scopic analysis. The matter in these booklets is only to a very slight extent duplicated, each of them playing a part in a scheme projected by the author some years ago, the intention of which was to encourage and facilitate the use in industrial laboratories of the spectroscopes and spectrographs made by Adam Hilger, Ltd. Hilger Instruments in Industry, first published in 1919, and now in its seventh edition, is an alphabetical list of industries in which the instruments referred to are of value. Mention is made of some of the applications, but no details are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Introduction to the Study of Spectrum Analysis (Classic Reprint) by William Marshall Watts Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Spectrum Analysis In no science, perhaps, does the sober statement of the results which have been achieved appeal so strongly to the imaginationand make so evident the almost boundless powers of the mind of man. By means of its light alone to analyze the chemical nature of a far distant body; to be able to reason about its present state in relation to the past and future; to measure within an English mile or less per second the otherwise invisible motion which it may have towards or from us; to do more - to make even that which is darkness to our eyes light, and from vibrations which our organs of sight are powerless to perceive, to evolve a revelation in which we see mirrored some of the stages through which the stars may pass in their slow evolutional progress - surely the record of such achievements, however poor the form of words in which they may be described, is worthy to be regarded as the scientific epic Of the century. Excerpt from The Origin of Spectra By arrangement with the Interallied Conference of Pure and Applied Chemistry, which met in London and Brussels in July, 1919, the Ameri can Chemical Society was to undertake the production and publication of Scientific and Technologic Monographs on chemical subjects. At the same time it was agreed that the National Research Council, in coopera tion with the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society, should undertake the production and publication of Critical Tables of Chemical and Physical Constants. The American Chemical Society and the National Research Council mutually agreed to care for these two fields of chemical development. The American Chemical Society named as Trustees, to make the necessary arrangements for the publication of the monographs, Charles L. Parsons, Secretary of the American Chemical Society, Washington, D. C.; John E. Teeple, Treas urer of the American Chemical Society, New York City; and Professor Gellert Alleman of Swarthmore College. The Trustees have arranged for the publication of the American Chemical Society series of (a) Scientific and (b) Technologic Monographs by the Chemical Catalog Company of New York City. The Council, acting through the Committee on National Policy of the American Chemical Society, appointed the editors, named at the close of this introduction, to have charge of securing authors, and of consider ing critically the manuscripts prepared. The editors of each series will endeavor to select topics which are of current interest and authors who are recognized as authorities in their respective fields. The list of mono graphs thus far secured appears in the publisher's own announcement elsewhere in this volume. The Spectroscope by Thomas Thorne Baker Pdf

Excerpt from The Spectroscope: Its Uses in General Analytical Chemistry Colour Refraction and dispersion Absorption The spectrum, prismatic and diffraction - Nature of spectra - Principles of the spectroscope. White light, as 'daylight' and. Most Ordinary sources of artificial light are called, is in reality a composition. A beam of white light can be split up into a number Of beams of coloured light, and these, if recombined, would once again produce the sensation Of white light. Light is caused by electro-magnetic vibrations of the ether, which travel in the form of waves, meet the eye, and stimulate the Optic nerves. According to the young-helmholtz theory of colour, three primary colour sensations exist, and the eye possesses three sets of nerves, which, when excited, give the sensations of red, green, and violet respectively. The sensation of white can be produced either when rays of light of three selected frequencies enter the eye, or when rays of a very great number of frequencies, to be considered later, enter the eye. The sensations of various colours are produced by the three sets of nerves being stimulated, singly or together, to different degrees. A Treatise on Astronomical Spectroscopy (Classic Reprint) by J. Scheiner Pdf

Excerpt from A Treatise on Astronomical Spectroscopy As the domain of astronomical spectroscopy has so constantly widened, every astrophysicist must have felt the increasing need of a work presenting an exhaustive account of all the modern methods and results of research in this branch of science. This need has been so strongly felt by myself as to impel me to undertake the difficult task of compiling a work of this character. The plan of the book indicates the view by Which I have been governed: I have endeavored. To satisfy the requirements both of practice and theory, while giving at the same time a record of the results thus far accomplished. I have also thought it desirable that the book should be made useful for practical work and advanced study by the addition of a number of spectroscopic tables and a fairly complete Bibliography. The Spectroscope in Medicine (Classic Reprint) by Charles Alexander Macmunn Pdf

Excerpt from The Spectroscope in Medicine The Spectroscope seems likely to be of almost as great use in Medicine as it has already proved in terrestrial, solar, and stellar Chemistry. Hitherto the great hindrances to its use have been erroneous ideas as to the difficulties which seem to surround this method of investigation; such ideas having arisen from want of a simple treatise on the in strument and its applications to Physiology and Pathology. In the following pages such information will be found, and the publication of this little book will, I trust, lead to a more extended use of the spectroscope, which has already done good work in Physiology and Pathology, and has corrected many erroneous ideas regarding various animal pigments.
