Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) wrote remarkably little about himself, but he has attracted the attention of many writers, politicians, and scholars, both during his lifetime and ever since. Until recent years oratory was considered a fundamental component of the literature of a nation, and a liberal education implied a knowledge of the great speakers and their principal speeches no less than of the important poems, plays and prose works. For some time, however, the study of literature has been reduced in many places to just two genres: poetry and prose fiction; but of late literary studies have expanded considerably, to include speeches, children's and juvenile literature, historiography, diaries and journals, memoirs, letters, science and fantasy fiction -- even graffiti and inscriptions. Increasingly, papers on Commonwealth speakers are heard at national and international conferences and found in scholarly journals, and the speeches of famous persons are studied with the same intensity as their imaginative works. As a result, rhetorical theories and communication studies have developed rapidly in order to better evaluate speeches, or public address. The papers included in this collection suggest the range of studies of Commonwealth public address: historical, comparative, analytical and survey. Excerpt from The Oratorical Year Book for 1865: Being a Collection of the Best Speeches Delivered in Parliament, at the Bar, and on the Platform In the present volume, which it is hoped is but the first of a long series, an attempt has been made to reproduce in a compact and popular form all the most conspicuous speeches delivered during the year 1865. Hitherto the addresses of our leading statesmen and orators have only been preserved in the columns of the daily press, or, if spoken in Parliament, in the elaborate and expensive volumes of "Hansard's Debates." To refer to such sources for information is often an inconvenient and expensive process, whilst in the case of the Reports in Parliament a large portion of the volumes in which these speeches appear is necessarily occupied with matters of pure business, possessing but slight interest for the general reader. To bring, therefore, all the best utterances of the time on questions of general interest within the reach of all those who care to possess them, is the first object with which the present work has been undertaken. Apart from the interest which attaches to these collected speeches as specimens of cotemporary eloquence, their value as the most express record of the political and general opinions of the time cannot, it is conceived, be too highly estimated. For purposes of general reference, therefore, as well as of especial study by those to whom public speaking is a part of professional education, the "Oratorical Year Book" should have a peculiar value. Accordingly, in this view it is thought that all the most representative addresses of the year, even where no high standard of oratory may have been attained, will appropriately find a place in such a compilation as the present. With respect to the arrangement adopted in this work, it may be remarked, as to the first division, that in reproducing the Parliamentary eloquence of the time an endeavour has been made to reprint all the most important speeches delivered on the great questions in debate during the session. The international expansion of conceptual historical research during last 20 years is a remarkable turn in the academia. The conceptual confrontation of different approaches, themes and forms of research has reached several academic fields in numerous countries.
