Excerpt from Sporting Sketches With Pen and Pencil I have had the desire to publish an illustrated work of this sort for a good many years; but the difficulty always has been to meet with an artist equal to the task. Many a Shooting and Fishing Picture have I seen published, in which the artist had not the slightest acquaintance with the subject he bad undertaken, and wherein the details had been furnished entirely by his imagination. There can be no need for me to say that my friend Mr. Alfred Cooper has a thorough knowledge of Sport in all its branches, and of the implements and requirements needed for its prosecution. His drawings are most of them Nature, and many of the figures are Portraits of well-known persons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sporting Sketches (Classic Reprint) by Edwyn Sandys Pdf

Excerpt from Sporting Sketches Under the ice lie the trout, waiting, listening for the tread of the bear which they know will surely come. When the light above fails and the ice batteries boom, they feel his presence, and turning noses to the failing stream, they bide the issue. To them come mink and otter. Only these two can outwit the bear. They know certain unfilled rivet holes in the icy armor and its occasional flaws. Through these they slide to harry the helpless quarry. But the bear has orders to obey. His business is to see that the Law of the North is heeded. When the rallied forces of the South again rush northward, he must Slowly fall back, disputing every league of field until the last furious charge drives him to the berg-piled, impregnable stronghold of his king. Frank Forester's Fugitive Sporting Sketches by William Henry Herbert Pdf

Excerpt from Frank Forester's Fugitive Sporting Sketches: Being the Miscellaneous Upon Sport and Sporting, Originally Published in the Early American Magazines and Periodicals Y object in presenting a work of this kind to the sporting public, at this time, is quite fully defined in the introduc tory chapter, and to this I have but little to add. The utility and interest of a volume of this kind will, I trust, be apparent to the most casual observer. The writings of Frank Forester, as stated elsewhere, are too well and favorably known to require an apology for placing a new collection of his superb sketches before the fraternity of which he was, while living, the brightest light. Shikar Sketches by J. Moray Brown Pdf

Excerpt from Shikar Sketches: With Notes on Indian Field-Sports Should, therefore, this volume meet with any slight approval from sportsmen, it will, I be lieve, be more due to the clever pencils of the artists than to the unskilled pen of the author, who is but a novice in the fields of literature, and whose hand has been more accustomed to the use of rifle, spear, and gun than of the pen. If the perusal of these pages should prove the means of wiling away an idle hour, one of the writer's objects will have been attained; and if further it should induce younger men to devote their superfluous energies to excelling in the sports of the field, and acquiring some knowledge of Natural History, instead of wasting time, money, and health in vice and frivolity, these pages, if they do no other good, will not have been written quite in vain. Tales and Traits of Sporting Life (Classic Reprint) by Henry Corbet Pdf

Excerpt from Tales and Traits of Sporting Life A Man that's born and bred a sportsman can't help feeling proud of it. I should think it was so all the world over, as I am sure it is here. A man that has" a propensity" must show, and suffer for, it sooner or later. I should think it was so with all, as I am too sure it has been with me. At school it came out, as the M. D.s say, pretty kind on me. Derby winners all off by heart, foxes' brushes always to be found in the play-box, and a tolerably good recollection of last Christmas' equestrian performances, brought me a proper share of reverence that a change in the sovereignty of the County Hounds did everything to establish. A new Master for the hounds brought a new boy for the Doctor. The new boy's father was a friend of my father; and the next Saint's Day saw a pair of us off for the kennels, big in white cords and cover hacks. That did it outright; his father kept hounds, mi father kept race-horses; and certainly if ever the proper qualification for a sportsman brought becoming dignity with it, here we enjoyed it in full force.
