Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels by Alun Thomas Pdf

Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels are growing rapidly in popularity due to their versatility. The design and construction of both hard rock and soft ground tunnels has been revolutionised by the advent of the SCL method and now the use of permanent sprayed concrete linings has unlocked the true potential of the method to minimise construction costs and times. Yet the complex early age behaviour of the sprayed concrete makes the design difficult and requires a robust management system during construction. Consequently the great advantages of the method must be balanced against the risks, as a few high-profile tunnel collapses have illustrated. Practising engineers on site, in the design office or in client organizations will find this book an excellent introduction. It covers all aspects of SCL tunnelling – from the constituents of sprayed concrete to detailed design and management during construction. Although there is a close interdependence between all the facets of sprayed concrete, few engineers have the right breadth of experience and expertise to cover all of them. This urgently needs to be transferred to the wider engineering community as SCL tunnels play an increasingly important role in the delivery of the underground infrastructure which modern urban life demands. In this second edition, beyond a general updating to reflect new developments, the sections on permanent sprayed concrete, the innovative technology of spray applied waterproofing membranes, fibre reinforcement (both steel and macrosynthetic) and composite lining design have been expanded. Sustainability and environmental impact are addressed in a new section.

Shotcrete by Dudley Robert Morgan,Marc Jolin Pdf

Shotcrete: Materials, Performance and Use is a comprehensive textbook covering the current state-of-the-art shotcrete technology. It provides an overview of the many and various uses of shotcrete. Shotcrete is well suited for construction of curvilinear structures (domes, shells, bobsleigh/luge tracks, etc.) and overhead shotcrete applications (seismic retrofit, repairs, ground support, etc.) that could not be constructed technically and/or economically using conventional formed, cast-in-place concrete construction methods. It contains chapters on history, shotcrete materials and mixture proportioning, performance, shotcrete research, equipment and shotcrete application. It is also comprised of shotcrete case history examples including buildings and structures, infrastructure repair and rehabilitation, ground support and shoring, underground support in tunnels and mines, swimming pools and spas, and, finally, architectural shotcrete. This text should be of interest to design engineers and architects considering the use of the technology, as well as academics. It serves as a useful guide to contractors using shotcrete in one or more of its many and various applications.

Tunnelling and Tunnel Mechanics by Dimitrios Kolymbas Pdf

This book covers not only practical aspects but also the underlying theoretical approaches. It also covers the fundamentals of rock mechanics. The book addresses not only students but also professionals who are interested to understand the underlying principles and methods and – possibly – to further develop them. Emphasis is given to the mechanical approach rather than to hardly tractable empirical statements. The text is concise and comprises a large list of citations.

Proceedings of the 5th International Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference by IOS Press Pdf

Geotechnical engineers are at work worldwide, contributing to sustainable living and to the creation of safe, economic and pleasant spaces to live, work and relax. With increased pressure on space and resources, particularly in cities, their expertise becomes ever more important. This book presents the proceedings of the 5th iYGEC, International Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference, held at Marne-la-Vallée, France, from 31 August to 1 September 2013. It is also the second volume in the series Advances in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. The papers included here cover topics such as laboratory and field testing, geology and groundwater, earthworks, soil behavior, constitutive modeling, ground improvement, earthquake, retaining structures, foundations, slope stability, tunnels and observational methods. The iYGEC conference series brings together students and young people at the start of their career in the geotechnical professions to share their experience, and this book will be of interest to all those whose work involves soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Building Response to Tunnelling by Construction Industry Research and Information Association Pdf

The ability to predict the potential damage to buildings accurately and to have confidence in the chosen protective measures is of increasing importance for the viability of urban tunnelling. The Jubilee Line Extension Project (JLEP) presented a unique opportunity to capture reliable field measurements of the effects of tunnelling on a wide range of buildings. Building response to tunnelling: Case studies from the Jubilee Line Extension, London is the result of this work. Volume 1 describes the relevant part of the JLEP, the methods of settlement prediction and building damage assessment used on the project, and the objectives of the research. Further chapters provide accounts of the geology and historical development of more of the case study buildings (between Green Park and Canada Water stations of the JLE route). Full transcriptions are included of the before-the-event and independent best practice predictions of surface and at-depth ground movements at two greenfield sites and the settlement of four buildings, which were made specially for the research. The concluding chapter of Volume 1, written by Professor John Burland, presents the overall findings of the research to date. Volume 2 presents, in their geographical sequence, the twenty-seven case studies; from Green Park in the west to London Bridge, and then eastward to Canada Water station. These case studies include two instrumented greenfield sites and several examples of prestigious buildings in London's west end that were protected by compensation grouting. The case studies present descriptions of the buildings, the works that affected them and measurements made to record their response. This valuable and informative two volume book has been written by the experts who participated in the research and is generously illustrated with numerous line drawings, graphs, pictures and maps. Building response to tunnelling: Case studies from the jubilee Line Extension, London will be essential reading to tunnelling and geotechnical engineers and all those who have an interest in this successful and interesting underground project.

Design and Construction of Tunnels by Pietro Lunardi Pdf

This work illustrates how the Analysis of Controlled Deformation in Rocks and Soils (ADECO-RS) is used in the design and the construction of tunnels. This is a very new and effective way of tunnel construction. The ADECO-RS approach makes a clear distinction between the design and the construction stages and allows reliable forecasts of construction times and costs to be made. It uses the advance core (the core of ground ahead of the face) as a structural tool for the long and short term stabilisation of tunnels, after its rigidity has first been regulated using conservation techniques.

Specification for Tunnelling by British Tunnelling Society Pdf

This Specification for Tunnelling has been completely updated to refelct the many significant changes in tunnelling techniques. It is written to be used as a contract specification on its own, or in conjunction with other standard specifications on multi-disciplinary projects. The original Model Specification for Tunnelling was the first document produced for the industry with the specific aim of establishing a common standard for the design and construction of tunnelling in the UK. This new edition continues to draw heavily on the practical experience of both corporate and individual members of the British Tunnelling Society, and provides a sound basis for specifying tunnelling design and construction. This updated specification is a considerable advance on the original, and should continue to be the de facto standard for tunnelling in the UK.
