St. Helena, Ascension, and Tristan Da Cunha by Alan Edwin Day Pdf

These three South Atlantic British dependent territories were all discovered by Portuguese seamen in the early sixteenth century. Following in the wake of the Portuguese, English and Dutch Eastindia men found the island a convenient port of call on the long haul home. After a brief struggle, St. Helena was tinder the direct rule of the East India Company from 1673 to 1834 when it became a Crown Colony. It is best known as the place f exile of Napoleon Bonaparte from 1815 to his death in 1821. With the opening of the Suez Canal, and the introduction of steamships, St. Helena's economy collapsed and the island has remained a quiet backwater ever since. Ascension and Tristan da Cunha were both occupied by a British garrison when Napoleon arrived on St. Helena in order to prevent any attempt at rescue. Ascension remained tinder Admiralty control as 'a stone frigate' until 1922 when it became a dependency of St. Helena. During the Second World War an American air base was constructed which was heavily used as a staging post for the British task force en route to recover the Falkland Islands in the 1982 South Atlantic War. The base continues to provide an essential link in the logistical support of the British garrison on the Falklands. A small number of families eked out a precarious and isolated existence on Tristan from 1826 to 1961 when its volcano, thought to be long extinct, suddenly erupted causing the islanders to be evacuated to England. There was a general amazement when most of them elected to return to their hard life in 1962. Today, they enjoy six calls a year by South African vessels from Cape Town in connection with the crawfish industry on the island, and an annual visitby a ship from England.

Pandemic and Crisis Discourse by Andreas Musolff,Ruth Breeze,Kayo Kondo,Sara Vilar-Lluch Pdf

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a host of critical reflections about discourse practises dealing with public health issues. Situating crisis communication at the centre of societal and political debates about responses to the pandemic, this volume analyses the discursive strategies used in a variety of settings. Exploring how crisis discourse has become a part of managing the public health crisis itself, this book focuses on the communicative tasks and challenges for both speakers and their public audiences in seven areas: - establishment of discursive and political authority - official governmental and expert communication to the public - public understanding of government communication - legitimation of public health management as a 'war' - judging and blaming a collective other - cross-national comparison and rivalry - empathy and encouragement Covering global discourses from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, and New Zealand, chapters use corpus-based data to cast light on these issues from a variety of languages. With crisis discourse already the object of fierce national and international debates about the appropriateness of specific communicative styles, information management and 'verbal hygiene', Pandemic and Crisis Discourse offers an authoritative intervention from language experts.

The Cinema of Sofia Coppola by Suzanne Ferriss Pdf

The Cinema of Sofia Coppola provides the first comprehensive analysis of Coppola's oeuvre that situates her work broadly in relation to contemporary artistic, social and cultural currents. Suzanne Ferriss considers the central role of fashion - in its various manifestations - to Coppola's films, exploring fashion's primacy in every cinematic dimension: in film narrative; production, costume and sound design; cinematography; marketing, distribution and auteur branding. She also explores the theme of celebrity, including Coppola's own director-star persona, and argues that Coppola's auteur status rests on an original and distinct visual style, derived from the filmmaker's complex engagement with photography and painting. Ferriss analyzes each of Coppola's six films, categorizing them in two groups: films where fashion commands attention (Marie Antoinette, The Beguiled and The Bling Ring) and those where clothing and material goods do not stand out ostentatiously, but are essential in establishing characters' identities and relationships (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation and Somewhere). Throughout, Ferriss draws on approaches from scholarship on fashion, film, visual culture, art history, celebrity and material culture to capture the complexities of Coppola's engagement with fashion, culture and celebrity. The Cinema of Sofia Coppola is beautifully illustrated with color images from her films, as well as artworks and advertising artefacts.

Forced Marriage by Aisha Gill,Sundari Anitha Pdf

Forced Marriage: Introducing a social justice and human rights perspective brings together leading practitioners and researchers from the disciplines of criminology, sociology and law. Together the contributors provide an international, multi-disciplinary perspective that offers a compelling alternative to prevailing conceptualisations of the problem of forced marriage. The volume examines advances in theoretical debates, analyses existing research and presents new evidence that challenges the cultural essentialism that often characterises efforts to explain, and even justify, this violation of women's rights. By locating forced marriage within broader debates on violence against women, social justice and human rights, the authors offer an intersectional perspective that can be used to inform both theory and practical efforts to address violence against diverse groups of women. This unique book, which is informed by practitioner insights and academic research, is essential reading for practitioners and students of sociology, criminology, gender studies and law.
