Stand Up Straight and Sing! by Jessye Norman Pdf

In this uplifting memoir, the acclaimed singer reflects “on life, the arts, and spirituality . . . Inspiring” (Booklist). Jessye Norman is one of the world’s most admired and beloved singers—and her life story is as moving and dramatic as the great operatic roles she has performed on stage. Born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, she studied the piano and sang the songs of her childhood, never dreaming that this passion for music might lead to her life’s profession. Here she presents “a rich portrait of a childhood firmly grounded by family, church and community,” and recalls in rich detail the strong women who were her role models, from her ancestors to family friends, relatives, and teachers (The Wall Street Journal). She also discusses her relationship with the pioneering African American singer Marian Anderson—revealing the lifelong support she provided through her example of dignity and grace at all times. Norman also describes coming face-to-face with racism, both as a child living in the segregated South and as an adult out and about in the world. Filled with inspiration and wisdom, Stand Up Straight and Sing! is not just for lovers of music, but for everyone.

Black Women's Yoga History by Stephanie Y. Evans Pdf

How have Black women elders managed stress? In Black Women's Yoga History, Stephanie Y. Evans uses primary sources to answer that question and to show how meditation and yoga from eras of enslavement, segregation, and migration to the Civil Rights, Black Power, and New Age movements have been in existence all along. Life writings by Harriet Jacobs, Sadie and Bessie Delany, Eartha Kitt, Rosa Parks, Jan Willis, and Tina Turner are only a few examples of personal case studies that are included here, illustrating how these women managed traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. In more than fifty yoga memoirs, Black women discuss practices of reflection, exercise, movement, stretching, visualization, and chanting for self-care. By unveiling the depth of a struggle for wellness, memoirs offer lessons for those who also struggle to heal from personal, cultural, and structural violence. This intellectual history expands conceptions of yoga and defines inner peace as mental health, healing, and wellness that is both compassionate and political.

Living Otherwise by Duncan P. Mercieca Pdf

...One of the classroom assistants, Irene, decided to tell Ruth a story around the giving of invitations for her birthday party while she was feeding her. Mummy Sylvia was going to give a big party to celebrate Ruth’s birthday and a number of guests were to be invited, amongst them the classroom staff. At this point, Irene started asking Ruth whether she wanted to invite Duncan. Ruth signed no. Irene repeated verbally Ruth’s sign. No, then, shall we invite Jasmine? No again. Shall we invite Irene? No also. Shall we invite Ritienne? Again a negative answer. Shall we invite Joanne? Yes. Irene said: you only want Joanne at your party? And Ruth put her hand in front of her chest and laughed, moving her right leg in the air, an action which she normally does when enjoying herself. The teaching staff were suddenly involved and very interested in this play and asked Irene to go through the story with Ruth all over again. They suggested that this time Irene should change the sequence of their names recounted to Ruth. And so she did. But once more Ruth only invited Joanne for her birthday party. The whole process was repeated several times, still with Joanne being the only person chosen from the school staff. The teaching staff now was participating and commenting on Ruth’s responses. They tried to reason with Ruth in vain and persuade her in various ways to change her mind. Their arguments were similar to the following: You say no to Jasmine, but she is the one who escorts you home everyday – now is that fair? And Duncan, who loves you so much and spends so much time with you – don’t you want to invite him to your party? The staff members became concerned at Ruth’s refusals and not a little offended. There were moments when Joanne was trying to excuse herself and explain why she thought that Ruth would choose her. She tried to convince the others that Ruth was only joking, that in reality she does want to invite all of them... (p.140) This book addresses the question of agency that children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) have in educational contexts. When children have such severe impairment, the idea of their agency often does not cross the mind of adults around them. However this book draws upon the work of Jacques Derrida, Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze in relation to nine stories on engaging with children with PMLD, showing to readers the profound influence that children have upon the lives and actions

Songs of Silence by Curdella Forbes Pdf

There have been many great and enduring works of literature by Caribbean authors over the last century. The Caribbean Contemporary Classics collection celebrates these deep and vibrant stories, overflowing with life and acute observations about society. 'Falling in the spaces between knowing and not knowing, between silence and not speaking' Told from the perspective of Marlene, Songs of Silence is a vivid collection of reflections and recollections that meander through life in rural Jamaica, observing the lives and bonds of its colourful, boisterous inhabitants. Rich, poetical and profoundly contemplative, the recollections transcend the gossip and intrigue, the unsaid thoughts and silences, to ossify in a maturation of selfhood. It is not the 'Bam! Baddam!' of Papacita but rather the murmur of the river, this inexplicable river, and its cool morning misty silence that settles across this collection, singing to it and to the reader in a thoughtful lull and soft hum.

From a Distant Relation by Mikhah Yosef Berdichevsky Pdf

In his short life (1865–1921), Mikhah Yosef Berdichevsky was a versatile and influential man of letters: an innovative Hebrew prose stylist; a collector of Jewish folklore; a scholar of ancient Jewish and Christian history. He was at once a peer of Friedrich Nietzsche, the Brothers Grimm, and a diverse circle of Jewish writers in the Russian Empire and German-speaking countries. As a Yiddish writer, however, he remains unknown to general readers. Written in 1902-1906, but not published in full until the 1920s, his stories were dismissed by prominent critics and viewed as out of step with the literary taste of his own time. Yet these vivid portraits of a small Jewish town (shtetl) in the southern Russian Empire can speak powerfully to new audiences today. With enchanting humor, social satire, and verbal dexterity, From a Distant Relation captures the world of the shtetl in a sharp realist prose style. Themes of repressed desire, poverty, relations with non-Jews, and historic upheavals echo in a cast of memorable characters. Many of the stories and monologues feature strong female protagonists, while others shed light on misogyny in the culture of the shtetl. At the border between fiction and reportage, with a gritty underbelly and a deceptive naïveté, Berdichevsky’s stories explore dynamics of wealth, power, and gender in an intimate setting that resonates profoundly with contemporary Jewish life.

Called to Sing by Rachel Culver Pdf

Worship leaders, vocalists and every member of the body of Christ; You are a singer! You are called to sing the new song to the Lord. This is what you were born for. All throughout scripture we see the biblical command to sing to the Lord. But in our performance driven, celebrity culture, we have left this command up to the “professionals”. “Called to Sing” will show us scripturally how we are all singers. It will demystify prophetic worship and show you through practical tools how accessible and attainable it can be. Singing was always meant to be simple. Diving into scripture, this book will give a brief biblical history of prophetic singing beginning with the first prophetic song recorded in scripture the Song of Moses in Exodus 15 straight through the Hymns of Revelation. For worship leaders in the church, Called to Sing will show us how we can incorporate prophetic singing into our services and what the relationship is between prophetic singers and musicians. Through scripture and testimony, let this book inspire you to sing the songs from your heart to the Lord as well as the songs on the Lord’s heart for His people. SING!

THE LOVE AFFAIR When Beth’s choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek’s untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless.
