Statistical Analysis of Shortwave Fadeout Occurrence for the Years 1955 to 1969 by Richard G. Hendl Pdf
Shortwave fadeout data for the period 1955 through 1969 were analyzed and correlated with solar flare data for the same period. Details of the analysis are presented along with various statistical presentations of the data. The validity of computerized objective procedures for matching geophysical data is shown. Some doubt is cast on the quality of the shortwave fadeout data during the early part of the period considered. (Author).
Correlations of Solar and Geophysical Parameters-shortwave Fadeouts and Solar Optical Features by Ronald T. Podsiadlo Pdf
Shortwave fadeout durations are compared with associated solar flare characteristics and other features of the solar regions in which the flares occur. Statistical tests show that flare parameters, especially flare importance, have the highest correlations with shortwave fadeout duration. Most other active region features, such as plage area, also show some correlation, but to varying lesser degrees. Cross tabulations of the shortwave fadeout durations and optical features are presented and discussed relative to their use as operational space forecasting aids. (Author).
Ionospheric Prediction and Forecasting by Bruno Zolesi,Ljiljana R. Cander Pdf
This book describes how to predict and forecast the state of planet Earth’s ionosphere under quiet and disturbed conditions in terms of dynamical processes in the weakly ionized plasma media of the upper atmosphere and their relation to available modern measurements and modelling techniques. It explains the close relationship between the state of the media and the radio wave propagation conditions via this media. The prediction and forecasting algorithms, methods and models are oriented towards providing a practical approach to ionospherically dependent systems design and engineering. Proper understanding of the ionosphere is of fundamental practical importance because it is an essential part of telecommunication and navigation systems that use the ionosphere to function or would function much better in its nonappearance on the Earth and on any planet with an atmosphere.
Climate Change: An Integrated Perspective by Pim Martens,J. Rotmans Pdf
Global climate change - rapid, substantial and human induced - may have radical consequences for life on earth. The problem is a complex one, however, demanding a multi-disciplinary approach. A simple cost-benefit analysis cannot capture the essentials, nor can the issue be reduced to an emissions reduction game, as the Kyoto process tries to do. It is much more sensible to adopt an integrative approach, which reveals that global climate change needs to be considered as a spider in a web, a triggering factor for a range of other, related problems - land use changes, water supply and demand, food supply, energy supply, human health, air pollution, etc. But an approach like this, which takes account of all items of knowledge, known and uncertain, does not produce clear-cut, final and popular answers. It does provide useful insights, however, which will allow comprehensive and effective long-term climate strategies to be put into effect. Climate Change: An Integrated Perspective will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers. It is a useful source for the climate-change professionals, such as policy makers and analysts, natural and social scientists. It is also suitable for educationalists, students and indeed anyone interested in the fascinating world of multidisciplinary research underlying our approach to this global change issue.
Contemporary electronic music has splintered into numerous genres and subgenres, all of which share a concern with whether sound, in itself, bears meaning. Listening through the Noise considers how the experience of listening to electronic music constitutes a departure from the expectations that have long governed music listening in the West.
Interest in insect behavior is growing rapidly, as reflected both in courses devoted fully to the topic and in its inclusion in general biology, ecology, invertebrate zoology, and animal behavior--as well as general entomology--curricula. Instructors and students find that insects are in many ways uniquely suitable animals for behavioral study: the
Sound Souvenirs by Karin Bijsterveld,José van Dijck Pdf
In recent decades, the importance of sound for remembering the past and for creating a sense of belonging has been increasingly acknowledged. We keep "sound souvenirs" such as cassette tapes and long play albums in our attics because we want to be able to recreate the music and everyday sounds we once cherished. Artists and ordinary listeners deploy the newest digital audio technologies to recycle past sounds into present tunes. Sound and memory are inextricably intertwined, not just through the commercially exploited nostalgia on oldies radio stations, but through the exchange of valued songs by means of pristine recordings and cultural practices such as collecting, archiving and listing. This book explores several types of cultural practices involving the remembrance and restoration of past sounds. At the same time, it theorizes the cultural meaning of collecting, recycling, reciting, and remembering sound and music.
