Statistical Methods for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care by Paul S. Myles,Tony Gin Pdf

Reviews the fundamental principals of statistics that anesthetists need to interpret current anesthetic literature and design research projects. Myles (Monashi University, Melbourne) and Gin (University of Hong Kong) explain descriptive statistics, probability and inference, comparing groups, regression, and correlation. Finally, the book introduces more complex statistical methods, such as survival analysis, meta-analysis and evidence-based medicine, which are being used more frequently in anaesthesia and intensive care. Anaesthesia and Intensive Care A-Z E-Book by Steve Yentis,Nicholas P. Hirsch,James Ip Pdf

For 25 years Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine A-Z has provided a comprehensive resource of the relevant aspects of pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, physics, statistics, medicine, surgery, general anaesthetic practice, intensive care, equipment, and the history of anaesthesia and intensive care. Originally prepared as essential reading for candidates for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and similar exams, this fully updated edition will also prove as invaluable as ever for all anaesthetists and critical care physicians, as well as operating department practitioners and specialist nurses. The alphabetical arrangement with extensive cross-referencing ensures a full understanding of topics. The succinct and clear text and diagrams make for easy quick reference. The exam preparation checklist is ordered by key topics to facilitate effective revision. The contents are easily accessible with the accompanying ebook. There has been a substantial addition of new entries as well as revision of existing ones. This acknowledges the breadth of information needed to satisfy the range of activities performed by anaesthetic, intensive care, nursing and other colleagues, and also reflects the ever-changing field in which they all work. The consolidation of the role of anaesthetists as ‘perioperative physicians’ is reflected in additional entries of particular relevance and also by the enhanced title of the book. The structured ‘revision checklist’ of entries which is particularly useful to those preparing for examinations has been further developed for this edition.

Computing in Anesthesia and Intensive Care by Omar Prakash Pdf

There is a tendency of an increasing number of signals and derived variables to be incorporated in the monitoring of patients during anesthesia and in intensive care units. The addition of new signals hardly ever leads to thedeletion of other signals. This is probably based on a feeling of insecurity. We must realize that each new signal that is being monitored brings along its cost, in terms of risk to the patient, investment and time. It is therefore essential to assess the relative contribution of this new signal to the quality of the monitoring process; i. e. given the set of signals already in use, what is the improvement when a new signal is added? Beyond a certain point the addition of new information leads to new uncertainty and degrades the result (Ream, 1981) In the diagnostic process, it is possible to evaluate "result" in an objective, qualitative way. The changes in the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnosis as a result of the addition or deletion of a certain variable can be calculated on the basis of false negative, false positive, correct negative and false negative scores. Different methods for multiple regression analysis have been implemented on computers (Gelsema, 1981) which can support such decision processes. In monitoring, the situation is much more complex. Many definitions of monitoring have been given; the common denominator is that monitoring is a continuous diagnostic process based upon a (semi)continuous flow of information. This makes simple assessment methods useless.

Mathematics and Statistics in Anaesthesia by Steven Cruickshank Pdf

Anaesthetic trainees often have enormous trouble understanding the quantitative aspects of the basic sciences underlying clinical anaesthetic practice. The subjects of pharmokinetics and statistics are often unpopular with trainees, and studied with little enthusiasm. In spite of theirreluctance, this is an area that they are required to study and understand as a core part of their training for postgraduate exams. Mathematics and statistics for anaesthetists presents simple mathematical ideas, and explains how these can be used to model and understand problems which arise inclinical anaesthesia. The common features of the underlying mathematics are emphasised through a pictorial/graphical approach, in preference to vast amounts of algebra. The book presents statistics in an informal and less intimidating style that most standard statistical texts, incorporatingillustrations and cartoons throughout. The book will be valuable to anaesthetists, in guiding them through what can be an intimidating part of their training.

Basic research, progress in technology and informatics, and the success of clinical pharmacology are the fundamental bases of this interesting field of medicine. Nowadays, critical care medicine is no longer for experts only, but it is a field in which researchers and clinicians, nurses and technical staff work in an interdisciplinary way, each offering their own skills. The volume is divided in six sections, devoted to critical care key issues, to lung diseases, to trauma, to acid-base equilibrium, to perioperative medicine, and to obstetrics.
