Status of the Westslope Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhynchus Clarkii Lewisii) in Alberta by Allan B. Costello Pdf

Every five years, the Fish and Wildlife Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development reviews the general status of wildlife species in Alberta. These overviews assign individual species "ranks" that reflect the perceived level of risk to populations that occur in the province. This document presents the Division's report concerning the status of westlope cutthroat trout, a polytypic species of trout endemic to western North America. Information is provided regarding the following aspects of the species: habitat, conservation biology, distribution, population size and trends, limiting factors, and status designations.--Includes text from document.

Heart Waters by Kevin Van Tighem Pdf

Water does not come from the river. It comes to the river. Heart Waters takes us to the sources of that water - and into the living beauty, human stories and future possibilities that also arise from the green slopes and valleys of Alberta's Eastern Slopes where the Bow River is born. For more than a century ago the foothills and Front Range mountains of western Alberta have been recognized vital to the future water supply for Canada's prairies. Virtually all the water that sustains communities, ecosystems and the economy of prairie Canada comes from this narrow strip of land arrayed along the Continental Divide. For all its importance, however, water management decisions have ignored the importance of land health and focused almost exclusively on building dams. The result, as the author points out, is that the Bow River's annual flows have decreased by more than a tenth, even while spring floods become more frequent and more destructive. The solutions to prairie Canada's water challenges lie in healing the wounded landscapes of our headwaters. Heart Waters delves deeply into the history and ecology of a landscape whose critical value as a watershed is matched by its sheer beauty and diversity. A rich array of stunning photographic imagery by Jasper-based photographer Brian Van Tighem complements the author's well-researched explorations of the stories whispered by the living waters that drain from Banff National Park, Kananaskis Country and the famous ranchlands of the Bow River watershed. Heart Waters is a deep exploration of place, and an invitation to recognize that our water future depends upon knowing our headwaters better and caring for them more passionately - as our heart waters. "We could belong here too," the book concludes. "We could be like the bull trout, the willows, the wary horses: like the river that continually arises from these fine green places where the waters are born. We could find our best selves in the stories of those living waters and the river that gathers them together."

Population Abundance and Stock Assessment of Westslope Cutthroat Trout in the Upper Oldman River Watershed. 2008 by Jason Blackburn,Alberta Conservation Association Pdf

"Westslope cutthroat trout currently occupies no more than 20% of its historical distribution in Alberta. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) has designated the species as {u2018}Threatened{u2019}. In the Upper Oldman River drainage, cutthroat trout still occupies most of its historical range; however, detailed information on the current status of the population is insufficient for fisheries management."--Document.

Abundance and Distribution of Westslope Cutthroat Trout in the Castle River Drainage, Alberta, 2008-2009 by Jason Blackburn Pdf

"In the Castle River drainage the population status of Westslope Cutthroat Trout is uncertain. Past introductions of non{u2010}native Rainbow Trout have resulted in widespread hybridization restricting pure Cutthroat Trout to headwater tributaries. I initiated a drainage{u2010}scale stock assessment to estimate the population size and distribution of Westslope Cutthroat Trout, (considered {u2018}threatened{u2019} by The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC)), Rainbow Trout, and their hybrids in the Castle River drainage."--Document.

Status of the Bull Trout (Salvelinus Confluentus) in Alberta by Alberta. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. Fish and Wildlife Division,Mike Rodtka,John R. Post,Alberta Conservation Association,Fiona D. Johnston,Alberta. Alberta Sustainable Resource Development,Alberta,Alberta Species at Risk Program Pdf

Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) is a char species native to western North America that colonized the major drainages of the eastern slopes of Alberta after the last glaciation. Since the early 1990s, this species has declined in both distribution and abundance, and is considered a Species of Special Concern in Alberta and Threatened under the Endangered Species Act throughout its range in the United States (lower 48 states). Declines have been attributed to human impacts on fish populations and their habitat. This report summarizes information available on bull trout in Alberta, and is a step in updating its status in the province. It covers habitat, conservation biology, distribution, population size and trends, factors limiting its distribution and abundance, status designations, and recent management in Alberta.--Includes text from document.
