Stepping Back to Look Forward by Charles H. W. Foster Pdf

This timely collection of essays - written by nine recognized forestry and environmental specialists - tells the story of the conservation, use, and changes in the Commonwealth's forests over time. The book traces the development of pre-settlement, colonial, and post-Revolutionary War forest practices, and concludes with recommendations as to how history might be used to inform and shape future policy. Underscored is the importance of private and local leadership, such as the unique Massachusetts town forest movement. Economic contributions and educational programs are detailed, as well as the ways Massachusetts' leadership has influenced national forestry. Written for the layperson, and reflecting the particular experience and style of each contributor, the history will appeal to a range of readers from local conservation activists to forestry professionals and policymakers.

Stepping Back and Looking Ahead: Twelve Years of Studying Religious Contact at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg Bochum by Anonim Pdf

This book includes a collection of articles by leading researchers on the topic of religious contact in the study of religion. Resulting from the final conference of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Dynamics in the History of Religions"–one of the largest research initiatives in the interdisciplinary study of religion worldwide in recent years (2008-2020)—this book encapsulates the twofold aim of this conference: first, to "step back" and reflect upon the merits and challenges of studying religious dynamics as a result of intra-, inter-, and extra-religious contact, and second "to look beyond" and pave ways for future approaches to study religion as a social phenomenon.

Step Back by Norman Drummond Pdf

Modern life is frantically busy - we rush from one thing to another, never stopping to think about what really matters to us, what we could be achieving if we could only slow down for long enough to see it. Norman Drummond draws on his wide experience as a headteacher, as a minister and as an internationally respected coach in life and business to bring home the fundamental lesson he has learned both for himselfand for others: we can't hope to achieve our potential unless we take time out to work out what is most important to us. Whether for a few minutes or for a few days, alone or with others - Drummond shows how easy and how effective stepping back can be. Most importantly, he focuses on the rich rewards of stepping back: clarity of thought, stronger objectives - and the ability to discern the true priorities of your own heart. STEP BACK is an essential book for a culture that is unable to rest and relax

Stepping Back from the Ledge by Laura Trujillo Pdf

In this “seismically moving memoir” (The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice), one woman asks a seemingly impossible question in the aftermath of her mother’s suicide: How do you mourn a loved one as you repair the injuries they inflicted? “Laura Trujillo resurfaces from the dark ‘sub-basement’ of despair with assurances for us all: There is hope. There is healing. Always, there is love. This book will save lives.”—Connie Schultz, author of The Daughters of Erietown ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker Laura Trujillo had been close to her mother for most of her adult life, raising her four children within a few miles of their beloved grandmother’s Phoenix home. But just three months after moving her young family to Cincinnati for a new job, Laura receives shocking news: Her mother had taken her own life—by jumping off a ledge into the Grand Canyon, a place Laura knew her mother had always loved. Laura and her mother had shared a profound and special bond, yet each had also kept from the other the deepest truths about their lives. As an adult, Laura finally broke her silence about the sexual abuse she had suffered as a teenager at the hands of her stepfather—a secret Laura had buried to protect her mother. After her mother’s death, Laura embarks on an emotional odyssey, searching for clues that could explain the depression, intergenerational trauma, and shared heartbreaks in her family. When she returns to the Grand Canyon, it becomes an oasis that nurtures Laura’s search for redemption and peace. As Laura wrestles with her feelings, she forges a new path forward. Moving and intimate, powerfully told, Stepping Back from the Ledge is a remarkable exploration of the bond between a mother and daughter, and of the hope that can come from facing the truth.

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back by Linda Carter,Jennifer Schense Pdf

This anthology offers case studies on the deterrent effect of international criminal tribunals in ten situations, six of which are International Criminal Court situations. The case studies cover four different international tribunals. This gives a new comparative perspective on the impact of international criminal law since the early 1990s. The book seeks to contribute to an important discourse on deterrence: on how international criminal tribunals can assist in a global, co-operative effort to prevent core international crimes. Thirteen authors draw on both quantitative and qualitative factors to assess the rise and fall of criminality and perceptions of deterrence amongst a wide variety of respondents. The studies are based on first-hand information where feasible. They are multi-disciplinary and holistic. Apart from the two editors, the book has contributions by Evelyne Owiye Asaala, Olivia Bueno, Dafi na Bucaj, Seydou Doumbia, Mackline Ingabire, Kasande Sarah Kihika, Sladjana Lazic, Sharanjeet Parmar, Kounkin Augustin Som and Eleanor D. Thompson. It presents concrete findings and recommendations to inform future work of international criminal tribunals including the International Criminal Court.

Agrarian Landscapes in Transition by Charles Redman,David R. Foster Pdf

Agrarian Landscapes in Transition researches human interaction with the earth. With hundreds of acres of agricultural land going out of production every day, the introduction, spread, and abandonment of agriculture represents the most pervasive alteration of the Earth's environment for several thousand years. What happens when humans impose their spatial and temporal signatures on ecological regimes, and how does this manipulation affect the earth and nature's desire for equilibrium? Studies were conducted at six Long Term Ecological Research sites within the US, including New England, the Appalachian Mountains, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, and Arizona. While each site has its own unique agricultural history, patterns emerge that help make sense of how our actions have affected the earth, and how the earth pushes back. The book addresses how human activities influence the spatial and temporal structures of agrarian landscapes, and how this varies over time and across biogeographic regions. It also looks at the ecological and environmental consequences of the resulting structural changes, the human responses to these changes, and how these responses drive further changes in agrarian landscapes. The time frames studied include the ecology of the earth before human interaction, pre-European human interaction during the rise and fall of agricultural land use, and finally the biological and cultural response to the abandonment of farming, due to complete abandonment or a land-use change such as urbanization.

From ancient conceptions of becoming a philosopher to modern discussions of psychedelic drugs, the concept of transformation plays a fascinating part in the history of philosophy. However, until now there has been no sustained exploration of the full extent of its role. Transformation and the History of Philosophy is an outstanding survey of the history, nature, and development of the idea of transformation, from the ancient period to the twentieth century. Comprising twenty-two specially commissioned chapters by an international team of contributors, the volume is divided into four clear parts: Philosophy as Transformative: Ancient China, Greece, India, and Rome Transformation Between the Human and the Divine: Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy Transformation After the Copernican Revolution: Post-Kantian Philosophy Treatises, Pregnancies, Psychedelics, and Epiphanies: Twentieth-Century Philosophy Each of these sections begins with an introduction by the editors. Step Back and LEAP by Patrick Mork Pdf

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and thought, “Where the hell is my life going?” All of us have been there and most of us struggle to find the answer to simple but difficult questions like “What do I really want?” and “How do I actually make it happen?” Patrick Mork, a former Google exec and serial tech marketer, hit that wall in 2017. After being fired twice in the span of 18 months at two different startups, he woke up one day terrified by the realization that what he had spent the past 20 years doing no longer excited him and that his passion for it was gone. Divorced, nearly bankrupt and teetering on the edge of depression, his life and career were in ruins. Fast forward 5 years. Patrick has become a highly sought after CEO coach and motivational speaker, built one of the fastest growing leadership development startups in South America, and moved to Santiago, Chile. He and his team have impacted 1,000’s of people and developed leaders and high performance teams for clients including Walmart, Liberty Media and regional unicorns like Xepelin and Betterfly. Step Back and Leap! Is an authentic, personal and raw series of stories that trace the author's life and challenges. From being bullied as a kid in Mexico, to flaming out in a startup destined for stardom in Silicon Valley. From starting a company at age 47 in a foreign country to surviving a near-revolution in the streets of Santiago, Chile. Each chapter recounts dramatic, real-life challenges Patrick faced and the 9 indispensable “keys” he used to systematically overcome each challenge. But it doesn’t require a fortune, an MBA from a top school or having worked at Google to make radical, profound changes in your life. Anyone can do it. With the right tools, support, perspective and hard work. Step Back and LEAP details 9 powerful keys to help you unlock your true self and live a life of purpose and meaning that is in line with your values. Each key is supported by a series of proven, practical exercises which will help move you from inspiration to action as you start to become the person you really want to be. “What might be possible if you could live a life of purpose and meaning?” Imagine the possibilities…. What readers are saying: “A powerful book to find courage to live life intentionally and with meaning. Patrick's life story is inspiring and his learnings can be applied to everyone. Through humanity, vulnerability and charisma, Patrick helps us reflect and find ways to face challenges and reinvent oneself. Worth reading!” Barbara Martin Coppola, CEO of Decathlon “An inspiring life story of making difficult professional and life changes. Patrick has assembled a worthy collection of life and career lessons, with plenty of humor, humility and vulnerability, and turned this into a practical set of insights and exercises that are really helpful for startups and larger company CEOs and executives alike.“ Matthijs Glastra, CEO of Novanta (NASD: NOVT) I’ve known and worked closely with Patrick for over a decade and know that many would benefit from this book which is a result of his deep self reflections and focus on constant, transformational change. Congratulations Patrick! Thank you for letting me be a small part of this amazing journey. Brad Bao, Founder and Chairman at LIME Part-autobiography, part self-help manual, "Step Back and Leap" is a captivating read from the get go. Patrick Mork has lived a rich, varied life and he's a strong storyteller, which might be why I found myself racing through this book in a single day. Mork is both open and unapologetic about his failures and successes alike, which makes the book refreshing and insightful. He articulates the classic problems of Marketing in Silicon Valley (and more broadly in tech), drives home the importance of purpose, and layers in a series of useful tips and exercises he's developed in his latest career as an executive/ corporate team coach. And when he takes you on the white knuckle ride of the Sequoia Century, you'll be hanging on the edge of your seat. As a three-time CMO on the cusp of (exciting) career change, I found myself scribbling down some of the bolder pieces of advice to take on my next journey. In the end, you may not agree with every square inch of Mork's approaches and philosophy, but you will exit the book entertained and inspired to be bolder in seeking your own truth. Leela Srinivasan, CEO at Parity, Board Member Upwork I can't recommend this book enough. From career to personal advice, this book taught me so much. I'm going through a pivotable time in my career as well as ending my 19 year marriage. I really took a lot of the advice to heart, especially around my values (and not deviating from them!), as well as learning from step backs in my career. Thank you Patrick for such sound advice! Erica M. Larsen - Gaming & CG&E Sales Coach at Google “I found it a fascinating (and unexpected) marriage of memoir and business. Sometimes I was so absorbed in the narrative that I forgot the book had business purpose, and then you would insert a pithy quote, an apropos reference, or an on-point exercise that grounded me in the lesson! “ David M.M. Taffet (serial entrepreneur and CEO) “The sustained narrative, of both your life and your career, moved me to tears on several occasions. If this book does not inspire others to live better, be better, lead better and just generally work harder on themselves, then nothing else will. You have created a treasure! Claire Harbour (Executive coach, Insead MBA, Former GM at LVMH)

Look Forward Beyond Lean and Six Sigma by Robert Dirgo Pdf

This book introduces the Look Forward approach to continuous improvement (CI). Look Forward is a management approach to CI that fosters an environment that infuses CI into the very fabric of the organisation. As a result, improvement is not an initiative or a project but rather a naturally occurring event that is anticipated, expected and prevalent. Look Forward is not a substitute for Six Sigma, Lean or Theory of Constraints (TOC), but rather is a necessary complement to each of these in order to assure self-perpetuating improvement that is ingrained in the corporate culture. Any business serious about improvement is going to consider these methodologies in the overall scope of their operations and the unique benefits they bring to the table. This book shows that for unbeatable sustained improvement they need to be intertwined with the Look Forward methodology.

Step Up, Step Back by Elsbeth Johnson Pdf

Many strategic change efforts fail. And virtually all of them are harder than they need to be. Why is this? And what can we do to make change more likely to stick? Dr. Elsbeth Johnson, a former equity analyst and London Business School Professor now teaching at MIT, has spent a decade researching how to deliver strategic change in practice. Based on asking managers what they needed from leaders, rather than just asking leaders what they did, her resulting Step Up, Step Back approach challenges some of our most fundamental beliefs about how to lead change – and indeed, about what we even consider to be 'leadership'. The Step Up, Step Back approach suggests leaders need to step up and do more than they typically do in the early stages of the change – in specific ways and at specific times; and then step back and do less than they typically do in the later stages of the change – again, in specific ways, at specific times. The result is not only change that sticks, but empowered, motivated managers who can get on with delivering change, without needing ongoing input or cover from leaders. Using real-world examples of how to apply the science in practice, Step Up, Step Back gives you a roadmap for how to deliver strategic change in your organization.
