Excerpt from The Life-Story of Insects Among the manifold operations of living creatures few have more strongly impressed the casual observer or more deeply interested the thoughtful student than the transformations of insects. The schoolboy watches the tiny green caterpillars hatched from eggs laid on a cabbage leaf by the common white butterfly, or maybe rears successfully a batch of silkworms through the changes and chances of their lives, while the naturalist questions yet again the how and 'why of these common though wondrous life-stories, as he seeks to trace their course more fully than his predecessors knew. Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore (Classic Reprint) by Hubert George Stanley Pdf

Excerpt from Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore Having from time to time written articles on insect life for journals and lectured upon the lives and habits of various small creatures, I have been struck with the great interest shown by the public, and this despite the very large number of books already published upon Such subjects. To A recent investigation among the shelves a. Of one of our largest libraries. Has opened my eyes as to the reason of so much rm ignorance existing, with such a mass of Q knowledge obtainable It is that so many 3 entomological experts use terms which Z are totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated, while, on the other hand, some of the most pleasing little books upon the subject are written for children, in childish language, or mixed up with a mass of information upon trees, flowers, shrubs, etc., etc. I am venturing in these brief pages to place in the hands of farmers, gardeners and others interested, a few. Stories of Insect Life by Mary E. Murtfeldt Pdf

Excerpt from Stories of Insect Life: Second Series Summer and Autumn IN studying insects it is very desirable to be able to keep them under observation from day to day. For this purpose various sorts of breeding cages are commonly employed. A breeding cage is simply a closed vessel in which a caterpillar or other insect may be kept alive and fed, so that it will go through the cycle of its changes where it can be seen. A Simple form of such a cage consists of a lantern globe or lamp chimney resting upon a wide, Shallow dish, in which sand or earth to a depth of two or three inches has been placed. When it is to be used for large caterpillars a small glass vial nearly full of water is set down in the sand in the middle of the space, with the top of the vial projecting somewhat above the surface. In this vial a leaf or branch of the food plant is placed. The cage is now ready for the caterpillar, which will find its food kept fresh for two or three days by the water in the vial. Then a new leaf or branch may be exchanged for the old one. The open top of the lamp chimney is to be kept covered with a small piece of mosquito netting, held'in place by a rubber band. For the lower dish a flowerpot or a flower pot saucer serves the purpose very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Insects by Harold Bastin Pdf

Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits IN the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Bay Lankester, Professor E. B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. The Population of an Old Pear-Tree by E. Van Bruyssel Pdf

Excerpt from The Population of an Old Pear-Tree: Or, Stories of Insect Life When certain blue spirits begin to flit about me, I depart from my study to go and read, in what I am allowed, even by my clerical uncle, to call my book of devotions. The devotions I mean are not in my bookcase. No publisher, if he ever thought of such a thing, could bring them out. They are a page of the book of Nature, opened in the country, under blue sky, displayed at all seasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Insect Transformation (Classic Reprint) by George H. Carpenter Pdf

Excerpt from Insect Transformation So many great names are enshrined in the literature of Insect Transformation, that the publication of a new book on the familiar theme may appear hazardous if not presumptuous. And as with lapse of time the literature accumulates, a well-balanced treatment of the subject becomes increasingly difficult. In this - volume designed to serve as an introduction to the study of growth and change in the life of insects - the author has sought, while re-telling many well-known stories, to call attention to some structural details that have hitherto escaped mention in text-books, and to discuss the relation of such details to the wider problems of insect life-histories. He ventures, therefore, to hope that the book may be of some service to serious workers in entomology as well as to beginners. Descriptions of the form of adult insects are given only in so far as is necessary to elucidate the structure of larvae, pupae, and immature stages generally. No attempt has been made to compile a bibliography, but references are given to books and papers to which the writer is indebted, and full lists of titles are to be found in many of these. Especial acknowledgment is due to the writings of A. S. Packard, L. C. Miall, L. F. Henneguy, J. H. Comstock and R. J. Tillyard. The source of every borrowed illustration is indicated in its title, and the thanks of the author and publishers are rendered to the United States Department of Agriculture, the Cambridge University Press, and the Royal Dublin Society, for the loan of blocks. The Cambridge Press has generously allowed the use of several figures from the author's "Lifestory of Insects," and from Dr. Tillyard's "Biology of Dragon-flies," while Prof. J. H. Comstock has kindly granted the use of illustrations from "The Wings of Insects," and from his lately-published "Introduction to Entomology." Insect Life by J. H. Fabre Pdf

Excerpt from Insect Life: Souvenirs of a Naturalist His philosophical position may be briefly stated to be a determined refusal to recognise evolution as a legitimate idea. In this we may think him wrong; but it must be admitted that his views form a valuable antithesis to those of the many evolutionists who take the position that all that remains for the naturalist to do is to repeat the words Natural Selection and variation, and declare that thereby we understand the Cosmos. Fabre is a difficult writer to translate. Probably no*one has ever written on this subject with equal brilliancy and vivacity. But he is the most Gallic of Frenchmen. If his words are literally translated, they scarcely make English if freely translated, the charm of his diction is too easily missed.
