Stories Of Tamil Devadasis & Dance Dramas In Rig Veda by London Swaminathan Pdf

The book titled STORIES OF TAMIL DEVADASIS & DANCE DRAMAS IN RIG VEDA has two parts. The first part deals with the Tamil Devadasis of India and Sri Lanka. I came across a rare Tamil book in the British Library in London. The authoress herself was born in a Devadasi family and had published a book in Tamil about 100 years ago. When I featured the book on Facebook, one research scholar approached me to translate it into English. I did a translation giving the gist of her writing. My thanks are due to that woman Ms Anjukam. She had collected the life stories of about 30 courtesans. The second part of the book contains my research articles on the origin of dance and dramas. We have ample evidence for dance performances in the oldest book The Rig Veda. There are about 20 Dialogue Poems in the Rig Veda. They are actually dance dramas enacted after the Yagas and Yajnas. What we have got in those poems are the plots or themes of those dance dramas and the actors would have built full length dance dramas over those plots at that time. There are interesting articles on Bharata’s Natya shastra. Since it is a technical work, that too in Sanskrit, not many people know the contents. There are very interesting details about the origin, stage, colour of the theatre seats and actors, jewellery etc in the book.

All About Dravidas, Tamil Sangams, Kumari Kandam And Tolkappiyam by London Swaminathan Pdf

The topics covered in this book include Dravidas, Three Tamil Academies, Lemuria or Kumari continent, Tolkapppiam and Tribes of Nilgris. They were published in the last 11 years in my two blogs. They are of enormous interest to Tamils. They have created big controversies in the olden days... The debate over those topics are still on. Foreign writers projected Dravidians as primitive and uncultured community... Max Muller said that the Aryans came into India from outside; in the same way Bishop Caldwell said that the Dravidians came from Mediterranean region. Mr. Kanakasabai Pillai who wrote ‘Tamils 1800 years Ago’, said that Tamils came into India from Mongolia. Some historians proposed that the Three Tamil Sangam are a myth; no two scholars agreed on these topics.

Kalidasa's Similes In Sangam Tamil Literature: New Clue To Fix His Age by London Swaminathan Pdf

KALIDASA is one of the greatest poets in the world. He became famous because of his apt similes and imageries in his seven works. He was a playwright and poet. His age is still an unsolved mystery. He is dated between second century BCE and 4th century CE, that means any date in a range of 600 years! Foreigners placed him in Gupta period around 4th century CE. But great Indian scholars dated him around first or second century BCE. I wrote a thesis to get Ph.D.in this matter. But the Sanskrit University asked me to put it in Sanskrit and I am yet to do it. After reading all the 18 books of Sangam Tamil literature and all the seven dramas and poems of Kalidasa, I came to conclusion that Kalidasa lived in Pre-Sangam period. Indian tradition also links him with the greatest of the Indian Emperors, Vikramaditya. After the original Vikramaditya of first century BCE died, hundreds of Hindu Kings called themselves Vikrama or Aditya or Vikramaditya. The proof for my thesis lies in the Kalidasa’s 200++ similes found in Sangam Tamil literature. Sangam poets even used the same epithet to the Himalayas (Kaanchana Srnga- Por Kotu) ‘Golden Peaked’. The first ten slokas of Kumara Sambhava of Kalidasa are used by Sangam poets to describe Himalayas and sages.

Animal Einsteins: Amazing Intelligence of Creatures in Nature by London Swaminathan Pdf

People show great interest in animal stories and anecdotes. Newspapers also publish incredible stories about animals and birds now and then; but they are not new. Even poets of Tamil and Sanskrit literature have recorded what they saw in real life. The poets used some of them as similes and others in their poems. From Vedic days Hindus have been observing nature and used them to teach lessons to people; There are several Subhasitas (golden sayings) in Sanskrit using animals. I have collected lot of such stories from literature and newspapers; bird omens are also believed in many cultures. Some birds like Bhulinga, Kulinga and Homa are yet to be identified and they may have become extinct. Hindus are unique in carrying gods on idols of animals and birds. It shows their continuous interest in living beings.

Hinduism and the Religious Arts by Heather Elgood Pdf

The roots between the Hindu religion and the wider culture are deep and uniquely complex. No study of either ancient or contemporary Indian culture can be undertaken without a clear understanding of Hindu visual arts and their sources in religious belief and practice. Defining what is meant by religion - no such term exists in Sanskrit - and what is understood by Hindu ideals of beauty, Heather Elgood provides the best synthesis and critical study of recent scholarship on the topic. In addition, this book offers critical background information for anyone interested in the social and anthropological roots of artistic creativity, as well as the rites, practices and beliefs of the hundreds of millions of Hindus in the world today.

Bharata Natyam Adavus by Gayathri Keshavan Pdf

This book, elucidates the basic steps called Adavus of Bharata Natyam in the traditional Pandanallur style, as taught by the revered Gurus Sri Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai and Sri Muthukumara Pillai, to Sri T.K Narayan and Smt. Jayalakshmi Narayan, parents of the author. It is an honest attempt to explain the various steps with unerring and accurate execution technique. The book offers a visual representation of the Adavus with the help of stick diagrams in a sequential manner so that the beginners and practitioners can understand the finer points of each movement. The author has developed simple schematics to show the various moves, such as jump, stretch, turn, hit etc. The author endeavours to illustrate Adavus in a precise manner in this book. Classification and categorization of each step is the salient feature of this work. Gayathri Keshavan makes a humble effort to pass on the knowledge of this ancient and sacred art to the present and future generations of Bharata Natyam dancers.
