Street Children in Kenya by Philip L. Kilbride,Collette A. Suda,Enos Njeru Pdf

As kinship relationships and support networks across family lines weaken with modernization, economic stressors take a great toll on children. Kenya, like some other nations in Africa and around the globe, has witnessed a rapid rise in street children. The street children in Nairobi come from single parent families which are mostly headed by women. Another group are AIDS orphans. This study documents how street children in Nairobi follow survival strategies including (for boys) collecting garbage, and (for girls), prostitution. Gender is emphasized throughout the book. Although impoverished families are the most likely to produce street children, not all poor families have their children on the streets. The problem of street children is a complex one that calls for a comprehensive and coordinated policy and program for intervention at all levels and in all sectors of society. Alleviating poverty and rebuilding the family institution should be among the first steps in addressing the problem.

Rehabilitation of Street Children in Kenya by John Kabutha Mugo Pdf

The reality of children working and living on the streets has posed a great challenge in Kenya. Scholars have made efforts to explain why it occurs and what might be done about the situation through various studies and research projects. However, research with these children has so far been centered mainly on the causal factors and the nature and impact of life on the streets, through bibliographic details. This book offers an analysis of present interventions. Through qualitative social research, the author focuses on the dynamics in the educational rehabilitation of children working and living on the streets of Kenya. John Kabutha Mugo studied music education at Kenyatta University in Kenya and education for children with special needs at the University of Hannover, where he was awarded a doctorate. He has written about children, child labor, and violation of children's rights.

Street Children and Homeless Youth by Lewis Aptekar,Daniel Stoecklin Pdf

This book deals with street children who live in the developing world, and homeless youth who are from the developed world. They are referred to as children in street situations (CSS) to show that the problem is both in the children and in the situation they face. The book examines several aspects of the children and their street situations, including the families of origin and the homes they leave, the children’s social life, and mental health. Other aspects are the problems of published demographics, the construction of public opinion about these children and the, often violent, reactions from authorities. The book then discusses current research on children in street situations, as well as programs and policies. The book ends with recommendations about programs, policies and research.

Educating Adolescents Around the Globe by Meike Watzlawik,Alina Burkholder Pdf

By traveling to different parts of the world, this book provides a multidisciplinary perspective on the current state of adolescent education and demonstrates how education systems are formed by and closely tied to culture. After establishing a theoretical background, the book delves into the particulars of adolescent education and its associated challenges in six countries (India, Kenya, Germany, Brazil, Japan, and Denmark). In tandem with the discussion of institutions, the stories of those who are all too often underserved or left behind are told. Despite the diversity of each education system, the investigation reveals several unifying themes that transcend the specific contexts. The lessons from each example are woven together to demonstrate how the individualized needs of students can best be met, in a vision for the future of educating adolescents."

Ethnography as Christian Theology and Ethics by Christian Scharen,Aana Marie Vigen Pdf

This book is a primary resource in the new and growing field of Christian Ethnography. In response to a variety of critical intellectual currents (post-colonial, post-modern, and post-liberal), scholars in Christian theology and ethics are increasingly taking up the tools of ethnography as a means to ask fundamental moral questions and to make more compelling and credible moral claims. Privileging particularity, rather than the more traditional effort to achieve universal or at least generalizable norms in making claims regarding the Christian life, echoes the most fundamental insight of the Christian tradition - that God is known most fully in Jesus of Nazareth. Echoing this 'scandal of particularity' at the heart of the Christian tradition, theologians and ethicists involved in ethnographic research draw on the particular to seek out answers to core questions of their discipline: who God is and how we become the people we are, how to conceptualize moral agency in relation to God and the world, and how to flesh out the content of conceptual categories such as justice that help direct us in our daily decisions and guiding institutions.

The problem of homelessness is clearly defined here from a global perspective. In addition, the history and resulting conflicts that have risen from homelessness are outlined. This ready reference analyzes the metamorphosis of the homelessness, what solutions have been suggested, and how effective these solutions have been. Students will learn to think critically about homelessness and what the future holds for each country as it battles with this seemingly unavoidable occurence.
