Mathematical Physics II by Enrico De Micheli Pdf

The charm of Mathematical Physics resides in the conceptual difficulty of understanding why the language of Mathematics is so appropriate to formulate the laws of Physics and to make precise predictions. Citing Eugene Wigner, this “unreasonable appropriateness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences” emerged soon at the beginning of the scientific thought and was splendidly depicted by the words of Galileo: “The grand book, the Universe, is written in the language of Mathematics.” In this marriage, what Bertrand Russell called the supreme beauty, cold and austere, of Mathematics complements the supreme beauty, warm and engaging, of Physics. This book, which consists of nine articles, gives a flavor of these beauties and covers an ample range of mathematical subjects that play a relevant role in the study of physics and engineering. This range includes the study of free probability measures associated with p-adic number fields, non-commutative measures of quantum discord, non-linear Schrödinger equation analysis, spectral operators related to holomorphic extensions of series expansions, Gibbs phenomenon, deformed wave equation analysis, and optimization methods in the numerical study of material properties.

Instability Mechanism and Disaster Prevention of the Jointed Rockmass by Shuren Wang,Hongyuan Liu,Chengguo Zhang ,Xu Chang Pdf

Discontinuities such as cracks, fissures, bedding planes, etc. resulting from different geological processes are commonly found in rock masses and often play a critical role in the initiation, propagation, and coalescence of new cracks due to stress redistribution caused by engineering activities and natural disturbances. It is challenging to determine the instability mechanism of jointed rock masses but it is vital for estimating instability disasters in jointed rock engineering.

Rock Dynamics and Applications 3 by Charlie C. Li,Xing Li,Zong-Xian Zhang Pdf

Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications is a collection of scientific and technical papers presented at the Third International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications (RocDyn-3, Trondheim, Norway, 26-27 June 2018). The papers in the book reflect the recent developments in experiment and theory as well as engineering applications of rock dynamics. Rock dynamics studies the response of rock and rock masses under dynamic loading and during the state transition from static loading to kinetic movement. It also includes the study of engineering countermeasures to dynamic instability of rock and rock masses. The topics in the book include: - Dynamic theories - Numerical simulation - Propagation of stress waves - Dynamic tests of rock - Stability of underground openings under dynamic loading - Rockburst - Seismic monitoring - Dynamic rock support - Blasting - Earthquake-related rock structure damage, etc. Applications, such as rockburst, dynamic rock support, seismic monitoring, blasting and earthquake-related rock structure damage, are paid special attention in Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications. The papers, from specialists both from mining and tunnelling branches, discuss commonly interested dynamic issues. Their experience and knowledge in the application of rock dynamics are extremely valuable for all academics, engineers and professionals who work with rock dynamics.

Geomechanical Behaviors of Deeply Buried Rock under Triaxial Disturbed Stress Conditions by Yu Wang,Xuefeng Yi,Lei Yin Pdf

This book is intended as a reference book for advanced graduate students and research engineers in rock mechanics related to civil, mining, hydropower, and traffic engineering, etc. For rock mass during construction, they are often subjected to complicated stress disturbance conditions, such as human-induced and environmental loading acting on rock that is cyclic or fatigue in nature. Typical forms of stress disturbance include excavation unloading, blasting vibration, earthquake, drilling and vehicle loading, etc. Usually, the stress disturbance condition is inferred as a kind of dynamic loading and differs dramatically from those under static loads. Along with the constructions on rock mass, a lot of disasters, e.g., tunnel rockburst, induced seismicity and sand liquefaction, are cyclic and dynamic processes. Nevertheless, insufficient attentions have been paid to the influences of disturbed stress on the long-term stability of rock mass construction so far. The discrepancy between theoretical prediction (by approximating the dynamic problems as static ones) and actual performance of constructed engineering structures is usually tolerated. As a result, investigation of the disturbed stress on rock is always vital to the rational design and the long-term stability prediction of rock constructions.

The Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method by Antonio A. Munjiza Pdf

The combined finite discrete element method is a relatively new computational tool aimed at problems involving static and / or dynamic behaviour of systems involving a large number of solid deformable bodies. Such problems include fragmentation using explosives (e.g rock blasting), impacts, demolition (collapsing buildings), blast loads, digging and loading processes, and powder technology. The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). The topic is gaining in importance, and is at the forefront of some of the current efforts in computational modeling of the failure of solids. * Accompanying source codes plus input and output files available on the Internet * Important applications such as mining engineering, rock blasting and petroleum engineering * Includes practical examples of applications areas Essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and software engineers working in mechanical engineering.

Rock Failure Mechanisms by Chun'An Tang,John A. Hudson Pdf

When dealing with rock in civil engineering, mining engineering and other engineering, the process by which the rock fails under load should be understood, so that safe structures can be built on and in the rock. However, there are many ways for loading rock and rock can have a variety of idiosyncracies. This reference book provides engineers and researchers with the essential knowledge for a clear understanding of the process of rock failure under different conditions. It contains an introductory chapter explaining the role of rock failure in engineering projects plus a summary of the theories governing rock failure and an explanation of the computer simulation method. It subsquently deals in detail with explaining, simulating and illustrating rock failure in laboratory and field. The concluding chapter discusses coupled modelling and the anticipated future directions for this type of computer simulation. An appendix describing the RFPA numerical model (Rock Failure Process Analysis program) is also included. About the Authors Chun'an Tang has a PhD in Mining Engineering and is a Professor at the School of Civil & Hydraulic Engineering at Dalian University of Technology in China.
