Twelve Major Plays by August Strindberg Pdf

August Strindberg is one of the founders of the modern theater. George Bernard Shaw considered him "the only genuinely Shakespearian modern dramatist," Sean O'Casey called him "the greatest of them all." And to Eugene O'Neill he was "the greatest interpreter in the theater of the characteristic spiritual conflicts of our lives today." Twelve Major Plays includes the most famous and most characteristic Strindberg plays. This selection is particularly interesting in its depiction of the great range of Strindberg's moods and styles, from naturalism to expressionism, from ironic comedy to bitter tragedy. It displays his great gift for symbolic, mystical verse as well as his command of dramatic prose. In issues of sex and gender, Strindberg anticipated the modern temperament in society and drama alike. These translations gave American readers their first opportunity to know the true genius of Strindberg. Most previous versions in English had been based on existing German translations. Elizabeth Sprigge's unique achievement was to render the original Swedish texts into English that is at once fluent and accurate and that captures the full vigor and impact of the original plays. August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish writer and playwright and is credited and being one of the founders of modern theatre. His writings combined elements of psychology and naturalism. Some of his minor writings, not included in this book, include The Outlaw, Master Olaf, Pariah, The Comrades, and Among French Peasants. Elizabeth Sprigge was educated in London and Ontario and was the author of a number of novels, biographies and children's books. She was co-founder of the famous avant-garde Watergate Theatre in London and lectured on literature and theatre in many parts of the world.

Plays by August Strindberg; First Series by August Strindberg Pdf

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION To the first volume of his remarkable series of autobiographical novels, August Strindberg gave the name of "The Bondwoman's Son." The allusion was twofold--to his birth and to the position which fate, in his own eyes, seemed to have assigned him both as man and artist. If we pass on to the third part of his big trilogy, "To Damascus," also an autobiographical work, but written nearly twenty years later, we find The Stranger, who is none but the author, saying: "I was the Bondwoman's Son, concerning whom it was writ--'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the free woman's son."" And The Lady, back of whom we glimpse Strindberg's second wife, replies: "Do you know why Ishmael was cast out? It is to be read a little further back--because he was a scoffer! And then it is also said: 'He will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in opposition to all his brethren.'" These quotations should be read in conjunction with still another, taken from Strindberg's latest play, "The Great Highway," which, while being a sort of symbolical summary of his life experience, yet pierces the magic circle of selfconcern within which too often he has remained a captive. There The Hermit asks: "You do not love your fellowmen?" And Strindberg, masquerading as The Hunter, cries ', in answer: "Yes, far too much, and fear them for that reason, too." August Strindberg was born at Stockholm, Sweden, on January 22, 1849. His father was a small tradesman, who had lost his business just before August was born, but who had the energy and ability to start all over again as a steamship agent, making a decided success of his second venture. The...

Plays from the Cynical Life by August Strindberg Pdf

The plays in this volume are one-act dramas based on human situations as conceived and interpreted by Strindberg at a time when he was convinced human beings are essentially selfish, self-centered creatures. All of them have been presented successfully in Swedish and other Scandinavian theaters. The situations are surely typical: people's willingness to claim credit for a fellow human being's success, a mother's manipulation of her daughter's life, a wife's inddiference to her mate except when others obviously wan him, denigration of a mate for one's own purposes, indifference to rationalization of one's sins, playing with one's own and others' emotions, and the unhesitant destruction of a fellow human being, at least partly in the name of religion. Written toward the end of his pre-Inferno period, Strindberg labelled these plays "one-acters out of cynical life." ["En aktare. Ur det chniska livet"]. Translations of two other plays--The Stronger and The Bond--which belong to this group were included in Pre-Inferno Plays (University of Washington Press, 1970). In translating these plays, Walter Johnson has presented American versions, faithful to the original and expressed in languages as idiomatic and natural as the original Swedish.
