Structural concrete designers nowadays distinguish between B-regions (named after Bernoulli beam theory) and D-regions (D standing for ‘disturbed’). They are all familiar with B-regions, but less acquainted with the expertise required for D-regions. To design D-regions, the Strut-and-Tie Model (STM) is usually applied, a model laid down worldwide in structural codes of practice. The Stringer-Panel Model (SPM) recommended here is a companion method to the STM, with the advantage of being suitable for different load cases and reversed loading. This being so, the SPM is suitable for linear-elastic analyses where durability is a key consideration, but also suits structural design for contexts of cyclical seismic activity. Finally, this book sets out how structural engineers who prefer the STM can nevertheless apply the SPM to determine a proper strut-and-tie model.

Summary: Cut-outs in wings or fuselages produce stress concentrations that present a serious problem to the stress analyst. As a partial solution of the general problem, this paper presents formulas for calculating the stress distribution around rectangular cut-outs in axially loaded panels. The formulas are derived by means of the substitute-stringer method of shear-lag analysis. In a previous paper published under the same title as the present one, the analysis had been based on a substitute structure containing only two stringers. The present solution is based on a substitute structure containing three stringers and is more complete as well as more accurate than the previous one. It was found that the results could be used to improve the accuracy of the previous solution without appreciably reducing the speed of calculation. Details are given of the three-stringer solution as well as of the modified two-stringer solution.

A method has been devised for the rating of the quality of production grade uranium metal by microscopic stringer counting. The basis of the method is to count the total length of stringers in a polished sample at 100 magnification with the aid of a one-half inch square ruled grid screen. Simplification of the method allows the substitution of standard rating charts for comparison with the sample under observation. The rating method as applied to 40 disc samples from two months production of uranium metal was able to distinguish a difference in the quality of metal as produced by two manufacturers.

A strain-energy method is presented for computing the compressive load for lateral elastic instability of hat-section stringers of simple cross section whose side walls and tops are flat and of constant thickness. Buckling stresses for such stringers having five different shapes and a range of lengths were computed by this method. The results confirm the opinion that lateral instability is an unlikely cause of failure for hat-section stringers.
