Studies in Semitic Vocalisation and Reading Traditions by Aaron Hornkohl,Geoffrey Khan Pdf

This volume brings together papers relating to the pronunciation of Semitic languages and the representation of their pronunciation in written form. The papers focus on sources representative of a period that stretches from late antiquity until the Middle Ages. A large proportion of them concern reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew, especially the vocalisation notation systems used to represent them. Also discussed are orthography and the written representation of prosody. Beyond Biblical Hebrew, there are studies concerning Punic, Biblical Aramaic, Syriac, and Arabic, as well as post-biblical traditions of Hebrew such as piyyuṭ and medieval Hebrew poetry. There were many parallels and interactions between these various language traditions and the volume demonstrates that important insights can be gained from such a wide range of perspectives across different historical periods.

Working with No Data by Thomas Oden Lambdin Pdf

The range and breadth of Thomas O. Lambdin's interests in Semitic linguistics are reflected in this collection of essays in his honor. Professor at Harvard University since 1969, Lambdin has vigorously scrutinized, analyzed, and written on many of the individual Semitic languages--Hebrew, Aramaic, Ethiopic, Coptic--plus the comparative and historical grammar of the family as a whole. But Lambdin's reputation derives primarily from his teaching, for his most widely used books (Introduction to Biblical Hebrew and Introduction to Classical Ethiopic) originated in the classroom. By training his students not only in the related languages but also in historical grammar and comparative semitics, he has enabled them to use comparative material with first-hand knowledge and critical awareness. The title of this volume reflects Lambdin's awareness that the linguist is frequently working in a field that has no previously established guidelines; the ramifications of this realization are then explored in various linguistic fields by former students and colleagues of Lambdin.

Aramaic in Its Historical and Linguistic Setting by Holger Gzella,M. L. Folmer Pdf

This volume contains contributions by W. Arnold, S.E. Fassberg, M.L. Folmer, W.R. Garr, A. Gianto, H. Gzella, J.F. Healey, O. Jastrow, J. Joosten, O. Kapeliuk, S.A. Kaufman, G. Khan, R. Kuty, A. Lemaire, E. Lipinski, H.L. Murre-van den Berg, C. Morrison, N. Pat-El, W.Th. van Peursen, and A. Tal. They discuss central issues of Aramaic linguistics in the light of the most recent research: editions of primary source material; extensive historical and linguistic overviews on matters of classification and language change; detailed studies of grammatical and lexical topics analyzing data from different Aramaic languages, for instance determination and tense-aspect-modality systems. Several papers closely interact with each other. As a whole, they bridge the gap between ancient and modern forms of Aramaic by providing a more comprehensive approach to this language group and its attested history of three millennia. Thanks to a sharp thematic focus, wide-ranging discussions of a great amount of material, and up-to-date theoretical frameworks, these proceedings can also act as a modern handbook of Aramaic in all its complexity. All articles are thematically arranged, fully indexed and cross-referenced.

The Verbal System in the Hebrew Text of Ben Sira by Willem Th. van Peursen Pdf

This volume is a revised and enlarged version of the author's Ph.D. dissertation (1999). It gives a comprehensive analysis of the morphosyntax and syntax of the tenses in the Hebrew text of Ben Sira. Due attention is paid to the heterogeneous character of the textual evidence (three manuscripts from the Desert of Judah and six mediaeval manuscripts from the Cairo Geniza), which complicates any linguistic study of Ben Sira. A descriptive analysis is complemented by a comparison with other contemporaneous, earlier, and later forms of Hebrew. It is argued that the Hebrew of Ben Sira is a literary language in its own right, rather than an imitation of Biblical Hebrew or a predecessor of Mishnaic Hebrew.
