A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1880-1885 (Classic Reprint) by G. K. Fortescue Pdf

Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1880-1885 The Index is, of course, designed to supplement, not in any way to supersede, the General Catalogue; consequently no personal names will be found among the headings, nor has the heading Bible, which would have been one of the largest and most important entries in the work, been reproduced from the General Catalogue. Novels, Tales, Plays and Poems have also been omitted. A few words of explanation are necessary as to the general system of arrangement which has been followed throughout the work. The headings and subheadings are in strictly alphabetical order; precedence being given under each to the larger or more important works, and all books being as far as possible grouped together according to their language in the following order - English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Spanish and Portuguese. There are, however, some deviations from this system of arrangement: for example, in the history of each country the titles follow each other in chronological sequence, irrespective of language. A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1891-1895 (Classic Reprint) by George Knottesford Fortescue Pdf

Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1891-1895 The first Subject Index of Modern Works added to the Library of the British Museum was published in 1886. It contained an Index of the books published in and after the year 1880 which had been acquired between January 1880 and August 1885. The second volume, issued in 1891, continued the work from September 1885 to the end of December 1890, while the present volume carries on the Index from January 1891 to the end of December 1895. The system of arrangement adopted in this volume follows as closely as possible that of the second Index, but as the latter will not necessarily be in the hands of those who may use the present work, it may be desirable to repeat here, almost verbatim, the explanations previously given.
