Subregional Cooperation in the New Europe by Andrew Cottey Pdf

Based on a major international research project undertaken by The Institute for East West Studies, this book provides the first comprehensive analysis of an important, but little explored, feature of post-Cold War Europe: the emergence of subregional cooperation in areas such as the Barents, the Baltic Sea, Central Europe and the Black Sea. It analyses the role of subregional cooperation in the new Europe, provides detailed case studies of the new subregional groups and examines their relations with NATO and the European Union.

Regional Cooperation in South East Europe and Beyond by Wolfgang Petritsch,Othon Anastasakis Pdf

The year 2008 will be a decisive one for the process of regional cooperation in South East Europe (SEE). First, the transition from the Stability Pact to the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) will become effective with the establishment of the RCC and its Secretariat in Sarajevo, indicating a major evolution towards more regional ownership. Secondly, the renewed and reframed Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA), or CEFTA 2006, will officially enter into force for all parties. Third, the Slovenian European Union presidency will endeavor to reaffirm the 2003 EU Thessaloniki Agenda, and work towards the completion of the network of Stabilization and Association Agreements and the enhancement of regional cooperation in several areas. This book addresses the challenges and prospects of regional cooperation in SEE by considering the increased diversity in the region, the new divisions and contradictions induced by the latest round of EU enlargement, the coexistence of numerous cooperation programs, and the still unresolved hard security issues. The book also discusses why SEE countries should embrace the process of wider regional cooperation that goes beyond too-narrowly conceived regional frameworks. A pan-European approach links SEE with countries in the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, Central Europe, and the Mediterranean basin. Upgraded and broadened regional cooperation in SEE would not interfere with, but rather complement and reinforce, EU integration and the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), requiring both innovative thinking and the careful recalibration of previous regional initiatives.

The EU, Promoting Regional Integration, and Conflict Resolution by Thomas Diez,Nathalie Tocci Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive study into the promotion of regional integration as a central pillar of European Union (EU) relations with the rest of the world. It is a strategy to deal with a core security challenge: the transformation of conflicts and, in particular, regional conflicts. Yet to what extent has the promotion of regional integration been successful in transforming conflicts? What can we regard as the core mechanisms of such an impact? This volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the nexus between promoting integration and conflict transformation. The authors systematically compare the consequences of EU involvement in eight conflicts in four world regions within a common framework. In doing so, they focus on the promotion of integration as a preventative strategy to avoid conflicts turning violent and as a long-term strategy to transform violent conflicts by placing them in a broader institutional context. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in European foreign policy, comparative regionalism, and conflict resolution.

The EU and World Regionalism by Michael Schulz Pdf

Much has been said about the driving forces of region-building processes or regionalization worldwide, yet few systematic and comparative studies have been conducted on how regions can contribute to the building of other regions - and more concretely, how the European Union has 'pushed' for regionalization worldwide. This comparative book investigates the impact that the EU has on regionalization elsewhere through its inter-regional relations. Covering agriculture, trade, ASEAN, NAFTA, MERCOSUR and Commonwealth amongst other topics, it investigates whether the EU contributes directly, as well as indirectly, to increased regional integration in different parts of the world.

European Integration Beyond Brussels by Matthew Broad,Suvi Kansikas Pdf

Europe is a continent whose history has, in one form or another, long been dominated by integration. And yet the European integration process is often treated as synonymous with the evolution of just one particular, and until recently geographically quite limited, Western-centred organisation: the European Union (EU). This trend obscures the multitude of ways European states have acted collectively on both sides of the Iron Curtain – and continue to do so throughout the continent today. With contributors drawn from history and political science, this book explores some of these diverse integration efforts ‘beyond Brussels’. We shine a light on international organisations, trade frameworks, and various political, social, scientific and cultural forms of unity in both Eastern and Western Europe. In so doing, the book seeks to redefine the history of the European integration process not only as a less purely EU-centric phenomenon but as a less strictly Western European one too.

Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration by Sonu Trivedi Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK Prompted by the uncertain outcome of the GATT/Uruguay Round negotiations, regional agreements mushroomed in different parts of the world. The collapse of the Soviet Union gave a renewed impulse to economic interactions at the expense of political and strategic preoccupations. Inter-regional co-operation reduces economic and social fragmentation created by national frontiers and hence facilitates integrated development of participating states. In Africa, as in other parts of the world, regional co-operation is a major factor in internal and international politics. This book focuses on the regional co-operation efforts in the three continents of the world, viz. Africa, Asia and Europe and their role in promoting and strengthening African Capacities. It examines various dimensions of regional co-operation with focus on bilateral relations between a community of highly developed states (European Union) and a group of developing countries, viz. COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa). The latter part of the book focuses on inter-regional co-operation between South Asian countries, particularly India, and COMESA. These two regions of the world share a common colonial legacy and are striving to improve the socio-economic conditions of their people. Inter-regional cooperation and integration is a vital necessity in a world witnessing trade liberalisation, foreign investments and reduced role of governments in economic affairs.

Initiatives of Regional Integration in Asia in Comparative Perspective by Howard Loewen,Anja Zorob Pdf

This volume offers to compare and explain variances of regionalism in Asia by disclosing the distinctive features of regional arrangements and how they evolved during the 1990s and 2000s against the background of a changing global environment. Moreover, it takes up a genuinely ‘inter-Asian’ perspective. By analysing and comparing diverse manifestations of regional integration agreements across Asia and its different sub-regions, it sets out to track their common characteristics and sub-regional facets with respect to their establishment, design and consequences. In addition, political processes accompanying their negotiation and implementation are scrutinized. The analysis encompasses nine case studies written by renowned scholars who together as a group combine an extraordinary mixture of different disciplinary backgrounds as well as expertise on shapes and processes of regional integration in different parts of Asia. The case studies seize on some of the most important features and controversial issues characterizing the second regionalism. Such are the emergence and impact of overlapping FTAs, regional financial and sub-regional economic integration and cooperation, power and the politics of regional integration as well as the nexus between conflict resolution, state failure and regional integration.
