Subtle Bodies by Norman Rush Pdf

**A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK** In a sophisticated romp through the tribulations and joys of marriage and friendship, a group of college friends reunites two decades after graduation. After the sudden death of Douglas, once the ringleader of a clique of self-styled wits, his four best friends are summoned to his Catskills estate to mourn his passing. Responding to a mysterious sense of emergency in the call, Ned flies in from San Francisco with his wife Nina in furious pursuit; they’re at a critical point in their attempts to conceive and she won’t let a funeral get in the way. It is Nina who gives us a pointed, irreverent commentary as the men reconvene, while Ned tries to understand what it was that made this clutch of souls his friends to begin with—before time, sex, work, and the brutal quirks of history reshaped them. Filled with unexpected, funny, telling aperçus, Norman Rush’s Subtle Bodies is also a deeply moving exploration of the meanings of life.

Chakras, Auras, Subtle Bodies by White Eagle Pdf

Chakras, auras, subtle bodies offers a remarkably comprehensive guide to its subject, both to the student of ancient wisdom and to the follower of White Eagle's remarkable teaching--coming as it does from the subtle world itself. chakras, auras, subtle bodies can also be used as a guide to spiritual unfoldment, for it shows how a steady development of awareness--one that begins, always, in the heart chakra--brings the subtle body to life. In chakra terms, says White Eagle, the purpose of life through many incarnations is to create, fully, what he calls 'the solar body'. As its name implies, this is larger and greater than the physical body as the sun is to the earth, and it shines with a corresponding joyous light. It is the body that exists in the Oneness, not in separation but in ever more perfect being, 'as the dewdrop slips into the shining sea'. Meditation is indeed a way to create the solar body, but White Eagle also tells us how important is work on earth - what he often refers to as 'service'. Service exists simply in living our lives on earth, but it can be enhanced in all sorts of ways. The second half of chakras, auras, subtle bodies is something of a workbook, in that it gives not only meditations but other exercises and suggestions which will help us bring the light of the heart into the other chakras, one by one, through meditation, insights and specific practices. Destined to become one of White Eagle's most popular books, chakras, auras, subtle bodies is unique in its contribution to a whole field of devotion and study.

Subtle Bodies by Glenn Peers Pdf

Throughout the course of Byzantine history, Christian doctrine taught that angels have a powerful place in cosmology. It also taught that angels were immaterial, bodiless, invisible beings. But if that were the case, how could they be visualized and depicted in icons and other works of art? This book describes the strategies used by Byzantine artists to represent the incorporeal forms of angels and the rationalizations in defense of their representations mustered by theologians in the face of iconoclastic opposition. Glenn Peers demonstrates that these problems of representation provide a unique window on Late Antique thought in general.

Religion and the Subtle Body in Asia and the West by Geoffrey Samuel,Jay Johnston Pdf

Subtle-body practices are found particularly in Indian, Indo-Tibetan and East Asian societies, but have become increasingly familiar in Western societies, especially through the various healing and yogic techniques and exercises associated with them. This book explores subtle-body practices from a variety of perspectives, and includes both studies of these practices in Asian and Western contexts. The book discusses how subtle-body practices assume a quasi-material level of human existence that is intermediate between conventional concepts of body and mind. Often, this level is conceived of in terms of an invisible structure of channels, associated with the human body, through which flows of quasi-material substance take place. Contributors look at how subtle-body concepts form the basic explanatory structure for a wide range of practices. These include forms of healing, modes of exercise and martial arts as well as religious practices aimed at the refinement and transformation of the human mindbody complex. By highlighting how subtle-body practices of many kinds have been introduced into Western societies in recent years, the book explores the possibilities for new models of understanding which these concepts open up. It is a useful contribution to studies on Asian Religion and Philosophy.

Yoga of the Subtle Body by Tias Little Pdf

With his expert teachings, philosophical insights, and pragmatic imagery, world-class yoga instructor Tias Little turns the anatomy of the physical body into a tool for navigating the subtle body If you spend considerable time doing yoga, you begin to see that it is about much more than just the body—the practice of yoga in fact reveals that the body is in no way separate from the psychospiritual forces that animate it. Here, Tias Little provides a way to understand these forces as they relate to an integrated yoga of body, mind, and spirit. He unites somatic concepts and wisdom teachings in this practical guide to the anatomy of the physical, mental, emotional, and subtle (or energetic) body. Little is a master teacher who offers us a guided tour of the body’s structure and physical anatomy, then uses this new structural awareness as the basis for exploring the subtle body. In a meaningful and pragmatic way, the book maps the connection between the body and the rich symbolism that pervades the yogic imagination, including the chakras, nadis, and koshas. Further, Little offers readers clear, insightful yoga, pranayama, and meditation exercises that apply these body-mind principles.

Our Invisible Bodies by Jay Alfred Pdf

What has Dark Matter got to do with your Afterlife? In 2006 Jay proposed that dark matter (which comprises about 85 per cent of the matter in the universe) could include self-interacting dark plasma. Subsequently, this proposal received support in the scientific literature. This has significant implications not only for the universe as a whole, but also planet Earth and its inhabitants. In recent years, scientists have pointed out to the life-like characteristics of plasma. How has this life-like dark plasma participated in human evolution? Does dark plasma provide the physical basis for your afterlife? Do we have dark plasma bodies which co-evolved with our ordinary matter bodies but are currently invisible to us? This book explores this in detail, while adhering to experimental data, with some surprising conclusions.

The Subtle Body by Simon Cox Pdf

How does the soul relate to the body? Through the ages, innumerable religious and intellectual movements have proposed answers to this question. Many have gravitated to the notion of the "subtle body," positing some sort of subtle entity that is neither soul nor body, but some mixture of the two. Simon Cox traces the history of this idea from the late Roman Empire to the present day, touching on how philosophers, wizards, scholars, occultists, psychologists, and mystics have engaged with the idea over the past two thousand years. This study is an intellectual history of the subtle body concept from its origins in late antiquity through the Renaissance into the Euro-American counterculture of the 1960's and 70's. It begins with a prehistory of the idea, rooted as it is in third-century Neoplatonism. It then proceeds to the signifier "subtle body" in its earliest English uses amongst the Cambridge Platonists. After that, it looks forward to those Orientalist fathers of Indology, who, in their earliest translations of Sanskrit philosophy relied heavily on the Cambridge Platonist lexicon, and thereby brought Indian philosophy into what had hitherto been a distinctly platonic discourse. At this point, the story takes a little reflexive stroll into the source of the author's own interest in this strange concept, looking at Helena Blavatsky and the Theosophical import, expression, and popularization of the concept. Cox then zeroes in on Aleister Crowley, focusing on the subtle body in fin de siècle occultism. Finally, he turns to Carl Jung, his colleague Frederic Spiegelberg, and the popularization of the idea of the subtle body in the Euro-American counterculture. This book is for anyone interested in yogic, somatic, or energetic practices, and will be very useful to scholars and area specialists who rely on this term in dealing with Hindu, Daoist, and Buddhist texts.

Transformational Embodiment in Asian Religions by George Pati,Katherine C. Zubko Pdf

This volume examines several theoretical concerns of embodiment in the context of Asian religious practice. Looking at both subtle and spatial bodies, it explores how both types of embodiment are engaged as sites for transformation, transaction and transgression. Collectively bridging ancient and modern conceptualizations of embodiment in religious practice, the book offers a complex mapping of how body is defined. It revisits more traditional, mystical religious systems, including Hindu Tantra and Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Bon, Chinese Daoism and Persian Sufism and distinctively juxtaposes these inquiries alongside analyses of racial, gendered, and colonized bodies. Such a multifaceted subject requires a diverse approach, and so perspectives from phenomenology and neuroscience as well as critical race theory and feminist theology are utilised to create more precise analytical tools for the scholarly engagement of embodied religious epistemologies. This a nuanced and interdisciplinary exploration of the myriad issues around bodies within religion. As such it will be a key resource for any scholar of Religious Studies, Asian Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Philosophy, and Gender Studies.

The book offers a unique understanding of how these centers, also referred to as “subtle bodies” can be identified and experienced, along with how they are related to personal transformation and health. In this volume, Osho gives an overview of the Eastern science of the subtle energy centers in the human body that are sometimes known as “chakras.” It is a science that underlies traditional Chinese medicine, Indian Ayurveda, and the practice of kundalini yoga, among other disciplines that recognize the deep connection between mind and body. Osho also shows how these same principles apply to human psychological growth and maturation, and the evolution of consciousness.
