Summary of Paul Radin's Primitive Man as Philosopher by Everest Media, Pdf

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The material in the first part of Dr. Radin’s book demands serious attention, along with a thorough revision of current beliefs about the background and origin of moral and social theories. #2 The second part of the book is devoted to the higher aspects of primitive thought. It is clear that objects and nature were conceived dynamically, and that change, transition, were primary. The world was not seen as a collection of sense-data, but as a dynamic entity.

Primitive Man as Philosopher by Paul Radin Pdf

Anthropology is a science whose most significant discoveries have come when it has taken its bearings from literature, and what makes Paul Radin’s Primitive Man as Philosopher a seminal piece of anthropological inquiry is that it is also a book of enduring wonder. Writing in the 1920s, when anthropology was still young, Radin set out to show that “primitive” cultures are as intellectually sophisticated and venturesome as any of their “civilized” counterparts. The basic questions about the structure of the natural world, the nature of right and wrong, and the meaning of life and death, as well as basic methods of considering the truth or falsehood of the answers those questions give rise to, are, Radin argues, recognizably consistent across the whole range of human societies. He rejects both the romantic myth of the noble savage and the rationalist dismissal of the primitive mind as essentially undeveloped, averring that the anthropologist and the anthropologist’s subject meet on the same philosophical ground, and only when that is acknowledged can anthropology begin in earnest. The argument is clearly and forcibly made in pages that also contain an extraordinary collection of poems, proverbs, myths, and tales from a host of different cultures, making Primitive Man as Philosopher not only a lasting contribution to the discipline of anthropology but a unique, rich, and fascinating anthology, one that both illuminates and enlarges our imagination of the human.

Myth by Robert Alan Segal Pdf

Where do myths come from? What is their function and what do they mean? In this Very Short Introduction Robert Segal introduces the array of approaches used to understand the study of myth. These approaches hail from disciplines as varied as anthropology, sociology, psychology, literary criticism, philosophy, science, and religious studies. Including ideas from theorists as varied as Sigmund Freud, Claude Levi-Strauss, Albert Camus, and Roland Barthes, Segal uses the famous ancient myth of Adonis to analyse their individual approaches and theories. In this new edition, he not only considers the future study of myth, but also considers the interactions of myth theory with cognitive science, the implications of the myth of Gaia, and the differences between story-telling and myth. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion by Jacques Waardenburg Pdf

Waardenburg’s magisterial essay traces the rise and development of the academic study of religion from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, outlining the establishment of the discipline, its connections with other fields, religion as a subject of research, and perspectives on a phenomenological study of religion. Futhermore a second part comprises an anthology of texts from 41 scholars whose work was programmatic in the evolution of the academic study of religion. Each chapter presents a particular approach, theory, and method relevant to the study of religion. The pieces selected for this volume were taken from the discipline of religious studies as well as from related fields, such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to name a few.

Mirror for Man by Clyde Kluckhohn Pdf

While the world has undoubtedly been shrinking, at the same time it has grown more complex. The likelihood of culture clashes leading to outright conflict is high, perhaps higher than ever. As Andrea L. Smith convincingly argues in her new introduction to this classic work, certain questions are as valid today as in 1949, when Mirror for Man was first published. Can anthropology break down prejudices that exist between peoples and nations? Can knowledge of past human behavior help solve the world’s modern problems? What effect will American attitudes likely have on the future of the world? In Mirror for Man, Clyde Kluckhohn scrutinizes anthropology, showing how the discipline can contribute to the reconciliation of conflicting cultures. He questions age-old race theories, shows how people came to be as they are, and examines limitations in how human beings can be molded. Taking up one of the most vital questions in the post-World War II world, whether international order can be achieved by domination, Kluckhohn demonstrates that cultural clashes drive much of the world’s conflict, and shows how we can help resolve it if only we are willing to work for joint understanding. By interpreting human behavior, Kluckhohn reveals that anthropology can make a practical contribution through its predictive power in the realm of politics, social attitudes, and group psychology. Andrea L. Smith’s new introduction provides convincing evidence for the continuing importance of one of the earliest “public intellectuals.”

Cognitive Development among Sioux Children by Gilbert Voyat Pdf

been largely devoted to uncovering the fundamental processes which underlie our capacity to reason. Thus, his efforts have been aimed more at elucidating the very processes which are available to us and allow us to gain knowledge, than in quantifying the contextual knowl edge that we have gained. Thus, the methodology of the research we shall describe con trasts very much with the standard testing approach, because it is essentially exploratory rather than static, and allows us the essen tial flexibility demanded by work with different ethnic groups, per sonalities, or social environments. We have undertaken a develop mental study which seeks not to explore personality as a whole but rather the cognitive aspect of development, and in which we employ the Clinical Exploratory Method of Piaget. Thus, we shall focus mainly upon cognitive development and attempt to describe it in its normal socio-economic and ethnic environment. Practical Implications In Piaget's theory the child is actively involved in organizing his world of thought as he develops, and to understand this growing organization we must return to the child and examine the course of his thought through growth. He develops, for himself, his own cogni tive structures and since this process of development is not only external, but goes on internally as well, it seems reasonable to assume that logic viewed from this end is not biased as much by the cultural context in which it is examined. Perhaps some examples. at this point, could better express the idea.

Irony of Theology and the Nature of Religious Thought by Donald Wiebe Pdf

Donald Wiebe critically examines the pervasive assumption that theology is a form of religious thought that is both compatible with and supportive of religious faith. The irony, he argues, is that theology is in fact detrimental to religion and the religious way of life.

The scholarship of Ulf Hannerz is characterized by its extraordinary breadth and visionary nature. He has contributed to the understanding of urban life and transnational networks, and the role of media, paradoxes of identity and new forms of community, suggesting to see culture in terms of flows rather than as bounded entities. Contributions honor Hannerz’ legacy by addressing theoretical, epistemological, ethical and methodological challenges facing anthropological inquiry on topics from cultural diversity policies in Europe to transnational networks in Yemen, and from pottery and literature to multinational corporations.
