Guidebook to the Constellations by Phil Simpson Pdf

This handbook is a guide to exploring the classical night sky and its wonderful telescopic sights. All 88 officially recognized constellations are presented in natural groups which are related by their origin and location in the sky. Each group is explained by a fascinating story which tells what each constellation represents, how it appears in the sky, and why the other constellations of the group are close by, or related in some other manner. Some of these stories are classical myths which show how and why ancient cultures saw the constellations as related groups. Others are about more modern astronomers who sought recognition by filling in the gaps between the ancient constellations with inventions of their own. Both types of stories are crafted to make the constellation groups memorable, so that amateur astronomers can not only locate and recognize the constellations more easily, but also be able to pinpoint the celestial objects they contain more quickly. Specific instructions are given for finding each constellation, how to spell and pronounce the constellation and star names, plus the origins of the star names. Finder charts show each constellation group and a large area of sky around the group. These charts also indicate pointer stars which aid in finding the constellations. More detailed charts show how each constellation figure is visualized through simple line drawings. For each constellation, there is a table of about 10 to 30 telescopic objects selected to include a wide range of difficulty. Some can be glimpsed with the unaided eye, others require a 12 or 14 inch telescope. All the most prominent telescopic objects are included, plus a varied selection of interesting, but much more difficult objects. The tables include each object’s celestial coordinates, type, size, brightness, other information specific to each type of object, and a recommendation of the appropriate telescope size needed for good viewing. There are also photographs of constellations and telescopic objects, detailed locator charts for the hard-to-find objects, and plots of binary star orbital motions. The same charts used to show the constellation figures are repeated, with the addition of symbols indicating the locations of all the selected telescopic objects. An index and seven appendices help the user find specific objects or classes of objects.

The Power of Stars by Bryan E. Penprase Pdf

Completely revised and updated, this new edition provides a readable, beautifully illustrated journey through world cultures and the vibrant array of sky mythology, creation stories, models of the universe, temples and skyscrapers that each culture has created to celebrate and respond to the power of the night sky. Sections on the archaeoastronomy of South Asia and South East Asia have been expanded, with original photography and new research on temple alignments in Southern India, and new material describing the astronomical practices of Indonesia, Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Beautiful photographs of temples in India and Asia have been added, as well as new diagrams explaining the alignment of these structures and the astronomical underpinnings of temples within the Pallava and Chola cultures. From new fieldwork in the Four Corners region of North America, Dr. Penprase has included accounts of Pueblo skywatching and photographs of ceremonial kivas that help elucidate the rich astronomical knowledge of the Pueblo people. The popular “Archaeoastronomy of Skyscrapers” section of the book has been updated as well, with new interpretations of skyscrapers in Indonesia, Taiwan and China. With the rapid pace of discovery in astronomy and astrophysics, entirely new perspectives are emerging about dark matter, inflation and the future of the universe. The Power of Stars puts these discoveries in context and describes how they fit into the modern perspective of cosmology, which has arisen from the universal human response to the sky that has inspired both ancient and modern cultures.

Mark's Gospel by Hermann Beckh Pdf

Hermann Beckh’s masterful study of Mark’s Gospel offers much more than scholarly argument. It is the work of a true visionary who allows his readers to discover the meaning of the Earth and of humanity for themselves. Beckh was in the forefront of entirely new research and recovery of the Gospel, writing more for the future than for his own time. It is not uncommon for biblical scholars to view St. Mark’s Gospel as little more than an assemblage of fragmentary sources and a copy of uncertain, early memories. The Gospel is said to have little historical veracity, harmony or guiding structure. Beckh’s contemporary, the German writer Arthur Drews, even argued that the text was nothing more than a simplistic solar myth, wherein another Sun-hero pursued his way around the Greco-Roman constellations. Mark’s Gospel: The Cosmic Rhythm is a response to such twentieth-century materialistic thinking. He was asked to write the book in the 1920s by the leaders of The Christian Community, who sought to rescue the desecrated Gospel from its opponents. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner and a vast knowledge of ancient languages – Tibetan, Sanskrit, Pali and Avestan along with Hebrew, Greek and Latin – the Rev. Professor Hermann Beckh perceived how the Gospel reflects God’s Everlasting Covenant, and meticulously expressed its aesthetic unity, the consonance of its parts and its consequent radiant clarity. His far-reaching understanding of sacred texts in the original languages, always associated with the disciplined meditation he had attained from anthroposophy, led to unprecedented insight. This new edition of his classic study has been revised and redesigned.

Constellations for Kids: The Fun Way to Learn About the Stars, Discover the Magic of the Solar System, and Stargaze like an Astronomer! by Aniela Publications Pdf

Are you ready to impress your friends & family with amazing knowledge & exciting tales of the constellations?! If so, keep reading… Have you ever looked up at the night sky & imagined what might be out there? You’re not alone! People have been wondering that for thousands of years. Technology like telescopes & space shuttles are quite new, so before we could really investigate space, people would make up stories about what they thought was up there. Some people saw heroes & monsters made out of stars & would tell stories about them. This book is going to tell you all about the wonderful things floating around above your head & teach you how to find some of the planets & special stars from your bedroom window. (It’s exploding with fun pictures to help you visualize them, too.) It’s also packed with legendary tales about the constellations, like how the constellation of Hercules shows him wrestling the monster Hydra or how Pegasus–a magical flying horse with wings–was the only animal that could carry Zeus’s lightning bolts without getting hurt! Discovering constellations doesn’t have to be difficult, even if you don’t own a telescope. You can even find them by using your hands! Try this HANDY (pun fully intended) tip to help you find the stars: Straighten your arm out in front of you & make your hand into a fist. The distance from your first knuckle (don’t count the thumb) to your fourth knuckle is 10 degrees. Now spread out only your thumb & pinkie finger. The distance from tip to tip is 25 degrees. (If you hold up just your pinkie finger by itself, the width of it is 1 degree.) This will help you navigate the night sky to find the constellations in this book! Did You Know: There are some stars you can see from Canada that will never be seen from Australia! Or that Jupiter, the largest planet, has 80 moons! Or that one day on Venus lasts as long as 6,000 hours! (That means 1 day of school would last over 8 months!) You’ll discover: Why the ancient Romans are responsible for our galaxy being named after a chocolate bar! Why your parents might be receiving messages from space when traveling! The incredible trick to see how far apart objects in space are just by using your own hand! The amazing star that the dinosaurs would have been able to see millions of years ago Why sticking a pencil through an orange can help you visualize how the earth spins Incredible tales behind the constellations that your friends at school won’t believe! How to master the constellations for any season! The planet that’s not home to aliens—but robots! What the Ancient Egyptians designed their pyramids to point to Why you should get your camera ready for the year 2061 Why the moon’s gravity could be a surfer’s best friend! The best time to see incredible events in the sky! How to see a meteor shower every minute Which fruit to shine a flashlight on to help you visualize moon phases An in-depth glossary so you can quickly understand the cool words inside & much more! From the giant Virgo to the much smaller Corona Borealis, you will discover all the tips & tricks to finding the constellations, as well as some amazing facts that will make you sound like a professional astronomer. There are so many things in space to explore that not even scientists know exactly what is out there. Who knows what they (or you!) will discover in the future?
