Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice,Committee on Public Health Approaches to Reduce Vision Impairment and Promote Eye Health Pdf

The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Diseases and Injuries of the Eye by George Lawson Pdf

Excerpt from Diseases and Injuries of the Eye: With Their Medical and Surgical Treatment Those who remember the last edition of this work, which was published in 1885, will scarcely recognise it in its new dress. The great success that attended former editions decided me to make an attempt to place it once more on a sound basis. Much care and labour has been taken to make the work as practical as possible. It was chiefly owing to the attention paid to the clinical features, and to the treatment of the various eye diseases, that the book obtained its former popularity; and to these portions, and especially to treatment, a much larger space has been allotted than is usually the case. At the same time, much more attention has been paid to the anatomical, pathological, and theoretical aspects, and, as a consequence, and owing partly to the great strides made of late years in ophthalmic surgery, the book has greatly increased in size. My endeavour has been, briefly, to present a work which will serve not only for the student of Ophthalmology, but will also prove useful as a book of reference for the general practitioner, who is more concerned with the practical relief of disease than with the theory of it. I can only hope that, in some measure at least, this attempt has been successful, and if so, the labour which has occupied the greater part of the leisure time of three years will be amply rewarded. Surgery for the Dry Eye by Gerd Geerling,Horst Brewitt Pdf

A number of structures contribute to tear production and maintenance, including the tear system, the lids and the orbit. The ocular surface itself is also a part of the system, including the cornea and conjunctiva. This makes for a very complex situation that can easily lead to changes in tear film and the ocular surface that are called "dry eye." Here a team of experts carefully examine how and when surgery is indicated, addressing normal tear film, normal anatomy (including immunological interactions), classification and diagnosis, anti-inflammatory and immnunosup-pressive concepts, correction and drainage techniques, surgery of the conjunctiva and cornea, keratoprosthesis surgery, botulism toxin injections, mucous membrane grafting, and salivary gland transplantation along with other treatments. The collection closed with a set of scientific studies. The color and monochrome clinical photographs and line illustrations are especially well-chosen and informative.
