Surviving Becky(s) by Cheryl E. Matias Pdf

The infamous rise in characterizations of white women as Becky(s) is a modern phenomenon, different from past characterizations like the Miss Anne types. But just who embodies the Becky? Why is it important to understand, especially with regards to anti-racism and racial justice? Understanding that learning, moreover even discussing, dynamics of race and gender are oftentimes met with discomfort and emotional resistance, this creative, yet theoretical book merges social science analyses with literary short stories as a way to more effectively teach about the impact of whiteness and gender. Additionally, the book includes guiding questions so that readers can critically reflect on the behaviors of Becky(s) and how they impact the hope for racial harmony. Designed specifically for both educational spaces and the larger society, the author, an educational researcher and former classroom teacher, approaches the topic of race and gender, specifically whiteness and white women, in a nuanced manner. By borrowing from traditions found in critical race theory and teacher education, this book offers both counterstories and anecdotes that can help people better understand the dynamics behind race and gender.

Surviving the Future by Scott Branson,Raven Hudson Pdf

Surviving the Future is a collection of the most current ideas in radical queer movement work and revolutionary queer theory. Beset by a new pandemic, fanning the flames of global uprising, these queers cast off progressive narratives of liberal hope while building mutual networks of rebellion and care. These essays propose a militant strategy of queer survival in an ever precarious future. Starting from a position of abolition—of prisons, police, the State, identity, and racist cisheteronormative society—this collection refuses the bribes of inclusion in a system built on our expendability. Though the mainstream media saturates us with the boring norms of queer representation (with a recent focus on trans visibility), the writers in this book ditch false hope to imagine collective visions of liberation that tell different stories, build alternate worlds, and refuse the legacies of racial capitalism, anti-Blackness, and settler colonialism. The work curated in this book spans Black queer life in the time of COVID-19 and uprising, assimilation and pinkwashing settler colonial projects, subversive and deviant forms of representation, building anarchist trans/queer infrastructures, and more. Contributors include Che Gossett, Yasmin Nair, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore, Adrian Shanker, Kitty Stryker, Toshio Meronek, and more.

Surviving Serendipity by Lawrence J. Enders,Lawrence J. Enders M.D Pdf

This semblance of an autobiography was prompted by friends and family who were mesmerized by the amazing number of serendipitous events which so frequently dotted my life. I personally believe that most people have experienced some similar happenings. In my case, these happenings just seemed so remotely unlikely for someone whose original goal in life was to be a very stable, home-town physician. As the story will reveal, what actually transpired was a far cry from that! Unusual incidents and unusual people became the usual. The events in this book are real. They happened as they are portrayed, to the best of my recollections. The sequence of events is reasonably, chronologically correct. What was of enormous help was my considerable collection of memorabilia for me to reference. The names and places are all real, with the exceptions of the FBI Agent and my three Russian KGB acquaintances. Since I believe they are all still alive, it is prudent to not reveal their identities. I hope you will find these unusual, albeit real, experiences interesting.

SRE with Java Microservices by Jonathan Schneider Pdf

In a microservices architecture, the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. But in practice, individual microservices can inadvertently impact others and alter the end user experience. Effective microservices architectures require standardization on an organizational level with the help of a platform engineering team. Author Jonathan Schneider covers many effective SRE practices from companies leading the way in microservices adoption. You’ll examine several patterns discovered through much trial and error in recent years, complete with Java code examples. Chapters are organized according to specific patterns, including: Application metrics: Monitoring for availability with Micrometer Debugging with observability: Logging and distributed tracing; failure injection testing Charting and alerting: Building effective charts; KPIs for Java microservices Safe multicloud delivery: Spinnaker, deployment strategies, and automated canary analysis Source code observability: Dependency management, API utilization, and end-to-end asset inventory Traffic management: Concurrency of systems; platform, gateway, and client-side load balancing

Human Enhancements for Space Missions by Konrad Szocik Pdf

This book presents a collection of chapters, which address various contexts and challenges of the idea of human enhancement for the purposes of human space missions. The authors discuss pros and cons of mostly biological enhancement of human astronauts operating in hostile space environments, but also ethical and theological aspects are addressed. In contrast to the idea and program of human enhancement on Earth, human enhancement in space is considered a serious and necessary option. This book aims at scholars in the following fields: ethics and philosophy, space policy, public policy, as well as biologists and psychologists.
